Ice caves on Lake Michigan

There’s been a lot of press and a lot of of visitors to the shores of Lake Michigan, especially in Leelanau County. People from downstate, upstate, out-of-state, and some locals are adventuring out onto the wintery ice of the big lake.

We had to see for ourselves what the hype was about!

While lots of folks ventured out onto the ice with just street shoes or winter boots, we would highly recommend snow shoes and a pole to help stabilize. Both the Coast Guard and the Sheriff’s dept. have issued warnings for people walking out onto the ice, for safety hazards, cracking, melting, etc. So use your best judgment and go at your own risk!

These photos were taken at the end of Gills Pier rd, off of M-22, between Leland and Northport.
