    CURTAIN UP! PARALLEL 45 THEATRE PERFORMS The Thanksgiving Play AT GAAC

    Parallel 45 Theatre performs a staged reading of The Thanksgiving Play, a contemporary, comedic satire about the beloved national holiday, February 13, 7:30 pm at the Glen Arbor Arts Center, 6031 S. Lake St., Glen Arbor. This encore performance is followed by a community talk-back session designed to explore and ask questions about the play. Admission is free. Seating is limited. How does one celebrate Thanksgiving and Native American Heritage Month at the same time? In Larissa FastHorse’s 2015 biting satire, this is the question facing three “woke” white thespians tasked with devising an elementary school pageant about the first Thanksgiving while avoiding any culturally appropriative missteps. The Thanksgiving Play is part of Parallel 45 Theatre’s Spring Reading Series. Performers are Interlochen Arts Academy Theatre Arts faculty Christine Brown, Bill Church, Elizabeth Gray, Shelby Lewis and Andrew McGinn.

    Parallel 45 Theatre is a professional theater organization based in Traverse City. For nearly a decade Parallel 45 has produced a festival of plays at the Civic Center Park in Traverse City, performed by artists from across the country and around the world. To reserve a seat, go to:

    A Short History of Color in Painting
    Wednesday, February 12 | Noon

    Art educator Linda Young traces how artists have used color — from the luscious pigments used by 16th century Renaissance artists to the color-drenched canvasses of the 1960s Color Field painters – on Wednesday, February 12 at the Glen Arbor Arts Center, 6031 S. Lake St., Glen Arbor. “A Short History of Color in Painting” is a BYO brown bag lecture, and begins at noon. Coffee and cookies will be provided.

    Young’s talk takes a look at the use of light and color by the Impressionists and Post Impressionists, the importance of black to the Realists, radical use of color by the Fauves, and the energy-charged canvasses of the Futurists and Abstract Expressionists. It is offered as part of the GAAC exhibition COLOR. Young, a Leelanau County resident, was the Director of Museum Education at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts for 20 years.

    Tickets for this event are $10 GAAC member, $15 nonmembers. They may be reserved on-line at GlenArborArt.org/LECTURES; or call 231/334-6112. COLOR is on display January 10 – March 26.

  5. Color In The Garden: Native Plants conversation

    Comments Off on Color In The Garden: Native Plants conversation

    The Glen Arbor Arts Center welcomes Brian Zimmerman, a third-generation landscaper from Traverse City, to discuss ways to bring more color to home gardens with native plants and pollinator-friendly blooms. Color In The Garden takes place Sunday, January 19, 2 pm in the GAAC gallery.

    Native plant are those that occur naturally in a region in which they evolved. They are central to the health and welfare of birds and pollinating insects as well as the human habitat. Brian Zimmerman has built his practice around a passion for plants native to Michigan. He is the owner of the native-plant focused Four Season Nursery in Traverse City. During this conversational presentation, Brian will talk about how he uses native and pollinator-friendly plants in his designs, and how home gardeners can begin to explore this rich source of native color.

    Color In The Garden is a free presentation offered in conjunction with the GAAC exhibition COLOR, January 10 through March 26. The GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St., Glen Arbor. For more information go to GlenArborArt.org, and click on EVENTS

  7. COLOR exhibit: Gallery Reception

    Comments Off on COLOR exhibit: Gallery Reception
    The Glen Arbor Arts Center injects COLOR into the new year with an exhibition celebrating chroma, hue, tone, tint and value by 29 artists. COLOR opens Friday, January 10, 2020 with a reception from 6 – 8 pm in the gallery.

    Color – both the thing and the idea – is more than a seasonal picker-upper. COLOR exhibitors explore how color is used to express emotion, tension, energy and action; how color can tell a story. And, what happens when the artist chooses to invent a palette for the subject – rather than be dictated to by the scene? COLOR exhibitors explore all these ideas and more.

    COLOR continues through March 26. The GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St., Glen Arbor. For more information go to GlenArborArt.org

    After a few years of this event taking place in some of the worst winter storms to date, everyone who attended this year enjoyed Spring-like weather with temperatures in the 50’s, sunshine and blue skies. Because of the snow and cold we had prior to this President’s Day weekend, the Glen Lake were still safe enough to ice fish on.

    2015 Glen Arbor Holiday Marketplace

    Dear Previous and New Artists/Vendors:

    The Glen Lake Chamber of Commerce will continue to hold the event for this year. As in years past, we have a limited number of booths to sell. Priority for acceptance into our Holiday Marketplace will be based on the following criteria as well as an attempt by our Committee to create a “balanced” show
    with a variety of artisans showcasing different types of gifts / work.

    Criteria will be based not only on the quality of your product, but the following as well:
    • Date application and check is received
    • Previous Participation
    • Handcrafted Products / Artwork
    • Chamber Members will receive priority consideration, but membership is not necessary

    The application is due by October, 1st 2015.

    >2015 Application | Click to view, print or download.

    If you participated in last year’s show, you do NOT NEED to send any photos of what you would be
    selling. If you are a new applicant to the Marketplace, please submit one or more photos of items you would be selling. Our 2015 Marketplace Committee will be meeting After Oct. 1st to review all
    applications and finalize our Vendor Roster. We will notify you via email or phone by Oct. 15 as to your status. Again . . . Space is limited and while we may make some adjustments to floor plan this year, we only have 26-28 spaces available.

    If you have any questions about this process please feel free to contact Betsy Webb, 2015 Holiday Market Chair, at [email protected] or call (231)334-4312. Our community is looking forward to a fun and festive event this year.

  35. Results: Winter Fest 2015 | Chili Cook-Off + Fishing Contest

    Comments Off on Results: Winter Fest 2015 | Chili Cook-Off + Fishing Contest

    A lot of people came out Glen Lake Chamber’s Annual Winter Fest event. There was very nice community support, especially with the extreme winter weather conditions…below zero wind chills, white out driving conditions, drifting, and constant snow fall. (see image gallery below…)

    Perch Fishing Contest Results…

    Despite the almost un-fishable winter conditions, 52 people participated in the ice-fishing contest, Raising $520 For Glen Lake. Scholarship fund. By far the worst conditions in the 18 years running the tournament.

    Ken Fosmore took 1st place with a 11 7/8 in Perch;
    Second place was Joseph, an 11 in. fish;
    Third place was Tim Egeler with a 9 7/8 incher;
    and Sam Shimek with 8 3/4 in. fish.

    Chili Cook-Off Results…

    There were 425 Attendees, with generous donations, we had over $5,000.00 in proceeds! Proceeds will given to the Glen Lake Chamber of Commerce’s Glen Lake Scholarship Fund.

    All but one Chili lasted, and the crowd gave up by about 2:45 pm.
    Randy Chamberlain, Chef/Owner of Blu in Glen Arbor, with his son Logan took first place, by popular vote, with their Black bean-chorizo Chili topped with homemade frito’s. Their First win in 10 years….very proud!
    The first time we’ve had The Homestead enter, taking 2nd place; Cherry Republic took 3rd, Anderson’s Market in Glen Arbor took 4th, and Bear Paw took 5th.
