Comments Off on 2017 Glen Lake Winterfest Results

After a few years of this event taking place in some of the worst winter storms to date, everyone who attended this year enjoyed Spring-like weather with temperatures in the 50’s, sunshine and blue skies. Because of the snow and cold we had prior to this President’s Day weekend, the Glen Lake were still safe enough to ice fish on.

  8. The Hunt for the Reds of October

Comments Off on The Hunt for the Reds of October
    October 2016
Leelanau Peninsula has become well-known for its Riesling and other cool-climate white varietals and blends. What is often overlooked, however, are the high-quality red wines being grown in the region. To help get beneath the surface, the Leelanau Peninsula Wine Trail hosts a fun event to explore and discover great red wines of Leelanau Peninsula.
The Hunt for the Reds of October takes place weekdays during the month of October. For the entire month of October, your $10 ticket gets you a complimentary pour at each of 20+ participating wineries offering diverse red wines: big and bold Cabernet Francs and Merlots, aromatic and spicy Pinot Noirs and many more.
In addition, the event benefits the American Red Cross of Northern Michigan with $5 for every ticket being donated the cause. Great wine for a great cause? It doesn’t get better than that!
  9. Cross Country Tournament at Manitou Passage Golf Club

Comments Off on Cross Country Tournament at Manitou Passage Golf Club

What, you may ask, is a Cross Country Golf Tournament?

A Cross Country Tournament is basically the same as a regular 4 person best ball, except that we are have taken the liberty of re-designing the holes (not literally).  Instead of playing the holes as they currently are laid out, you will play them not only in a different order, but to different locations as well.  For example, you may be starting out teeing off from the #1 tee box, but your target green will be #17 instead of #1.  You might then proceed to #8 tee box and play to #7 green.  You get the picture…we will be playing a total of 9 holes.

Keep one thing in mind, the number 1 goal of this tournament is to “Have fun!” This is a goofy format and there will be some goofy scores, but it will also give a chance to say “Thank You” to those who have supported us this season.

    Format:

    • 4 person best shot
    Start Time:
    • 10am shotgun start
    Fees:
    • $36 per person, non-members
    • $18 per person, members
    Includes:
    • 9 holes of golf
    • Cart
    • Lunch
    • Prizes!  (Let’s just say that the prizes are not your conventional gift certificates.  And, remember…this is for fun!)
Advance registration is required by September 2, 2016. Call 231.228.6000.

  13. Escape to Glen Lake | Art poster Series

Comments Off on Escape to Glen Lake | Art poster Series

We’re running a series of posters, developed by our 2016 Chamber Marketing Committee.

Thank you (Angela Brown of LVR, Brook of La Becasse, Jamie Jewell of the Homestead, Bob Ashmun of Ashmun Portrait Art, and Jeff Gietzen of Northwoods Hardware) for our many brainstorm sessions held at LVR around the conference table over Angela’s cookies. The group collectively dreamt up this concept as a way to promote the places to see and many things to do that uniquely represent our greater Glen Lake area that includes Glen Arbor, the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Empire, Burdickville, The Narrows, and even stretching to Maple City. After the concept was completed, the poster design/layout was done by Raquel of Rockwell Art & Design. The campaign is also being used as a part of print ads and online promotion, in the GL Chamber’s advertising efforts.

Photographic images are still being collected, taken or submitted for future poster designs in the series. Feel free to email us your high resolution images and you may get your photo selected to be a part of this poster series! Each photo will be “stylized” using a graphic design technique, to give the image a “painted” retro feel.

Below is one of the first released in the new poster series, titled “Independence Day” to represent the 4th of July celebrations, highlighting the parade in Glen Arbor. This photo was provided by a local, Don Miller.

    Poster Series_Escape to Glen Lake_4th of July-01

The series is designed to capture the many things about the Glen Lake area that make it special for residents and visitors alike. The things that make us literally “Escape” when we take in the natural beauty around Glen Lake. The posters will capture the essence of both “Points of Interest” that you must go to or see when you’re here and also the many “Things to Do” that highlight the variety of recreation. The top priorities on our list include •Hiking/Trails •Fall Colors/Wine Tour/Scenic Drives •Pierce Stocking •Heritage Trail •4th of July •Winter Recreation and •Summer Time. And there’s more on the list too.

The Glen Lake Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that the first two 18×24″ Art Posters have been printed and are available. They are also available through Jeff Gietzen at Northwoods Hardware for pick up and distribution. The posters can be displayed inside and out – we’ll have exterior building acrylic holders to show off the image on the outside of your shop or home, so you may change out the poster with the next one, year round. They may also be displayed in your own frame/holder on an interior wall or window, as an art piece to proudly represent the area. Rolled up posters in sleeves will also be sold in retail. The retail price will be $15.

Spring is a time of our beloved State flower’s bloom, the Trillium. Seek a forest floor full of these beautiful white blossoms. And Northern Michigan’s ever popular Morel mushroom can be found during the month of May. Learn more about hunting for Morels. | Check out our list of trails to visit.

  24. A place for Classic Cars…

Comments Off on A place for Classic Cars…

Classic Car Cruise Night in Glen ArborA visitor recently asked about friendly places downtown Glen Arbor for their classic cars. While the parking gets filled fast downtown in the height of the summer season, we’ll leave it up to you whether you care to park it in a public location.

However, there’s a place dedicated to pulling in your classic and mingling with other car buffs: Northwoods Hardware. They “Host The Classics” in their store parking lot, starting the 1st Thursday AFTER the July 4th Holiday, and every Thursday through the summer season.

“The theme of Cruise Night is to bring your classic hardware to the hardware,” said Don Drabik. From Glen Arbor Sun article.
    See more here.

The Classics start showing up at about 6:15 and will stay until about 8pm (weather dependent). Park your car and mingle. Northwoods is within walking distance of any local shops, galleries or restaurants you may also want to visit while in town.

Visit our business directory to see what’s in town. See you soon!

Comments Off on Results: Winter Fest 2015 | Chili Cook-Off + Fishing Contest

A lot of people came out Glen Lake Chamber’s Annual Winter Fest event. There was very nice community support, especially with the extreme winter weather conditions…below zero wind chills, white out driving conditions, drifting, and constant snow fall. (see image gallery below…)

    Perch Fishing Contest Results…

Despite the almost un-fishable winter conditions, 52 people participated in the ice-fishing contest, Raising $520 For Glen Lake. Scholarship fund. By far the worst conditions in the 18 years running the tournament.

    Ken Fosmore took 1st place with a 11 7/8 in Perch;
    Second place was Joseph, an 11 in. fish;
    Third place was Tim Egeler with a 9 7/8 incher;
and Sam Shimek with 8 3/4 in. fish.

    Chili Cook-Off Results…

There were 425 Attendees, with generous donations, we had over $5,000.00 in proceeds! Proceeds will given to the Glen Lake Chamber of Commerce’s Glen Lake Scholarship Fund.

All but one Chili lasted, and the crowd gave up by about 2:45 pm.
Randy Chamberlain, Chef/Owner of Blu in Glen Arbor, with his son Logan took first place, by popular vote, with their Black bean-chorizo Chili topped with homemade frito’s. Their First win in 10 years….very proud!
The first time we’ve had The Homestead enter, taking 2nd place; Cherry Republic took 3rd, Anderson’s Market in Glen Arbor took 4th, and Bear Paw took 5th.

  38. Toys for Tots | Leelanau County Campaign

Comments Off on Toys for Tots | Leelanau County Campaign

Leelanau County Toys for Tots falls under the purview of NW Michigan Toys for Tots based in Traverse City which in turn falls under the purview of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation.

NW Michigan Toys for Tots collects new, unwrapped toys for needy children throughout northwest lower Michigan including Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska and Leelanau counties. Those toys are turned over to resource agencies in each county, such as Salvation Army, Father Fred and many others, to be distributed to pre-qualified families.

All of the toys collected in Leelanau County through Dec. 15 will be given to Leelanau County children. Toys donated from Dec. 16-19 will be given to the NW Michigan Toys for Tots organization for distribution to other area counties in need of additional toys.

In 2013 Residents of Leelanau County donated 2,098 toys!

NW Michigan Toys for Tots fills our gaps as far as toys needed for specific age groups, and also gives funds to the Leelanau County Toys for Tots coordinators so that they can shop for toys.  In addition, the Antrim County based Bikes for Tykes program supplied a number of new bicycles to the Leelanau County effort in 2013.

Toys for Tots does not accept used toys, homemade toys, clothing, school supplies or food.

The effort to give Christmas to area children will only succeed if our community works together.  Leelanau County is blessed with individuals and businesses who care about our community and care about those who are less fortunate than themselves. We are counting on Leelanau County to once again provide Christmas gifts to needy children in our county.

We are most grateful that the Suttons Bay Schools Holiday concert will, hopefully, boost toy donations again this year.  The concert will be held at Suttons Bay High School Auditorium on December 4th at 6:30PM. They ask that a new, unwrapped, toy be donated at the school, either on the night of the concert or during school hours. A toy donation box will be available at Suttons Bay School from November 10 to December 19.

Any questions about the Leelanau County Toys for Tots effort may be directed to Charlie or Karen Fredrickson at 231-271-3620.

  40. Live Music downtown at the BBQ & Brew

Comments Off on Live Music downtown at the BBQ & Brew

Enjoy local food and drinks paired with great entertainment!

This Summer Celebration – The Glen Arbor BBQ and Brew Festival is set for Saturday June 21st from 2-8 p.m. in Downtown Glen Arbor…under the tent at corner of M-22 and Lake Street. It’s being sponsored by the Glen Lake Chamber of Commerce.

Two bands will provide enjoyable listening and dance music…

From 2:00-5:00, from Ann Arbor, Mustard’s Retreat (David Tamulevich and Michael Hough) will entertain us with folk music, stories, and humor!

Mustard’s Retreat met in Ann Arbor in 1974, as short order cooks, both on hiatus from their studies at U of M. Discovering a mutual interest in music/writing and performing, they put together 3 songs one day after work and took them to the legendary Ark Coffeehouse’s open mike night. They were a big hit, and, on their way.  Everything Mustard’s Retreat does on a stage is aimed at pleasing, moving and engaging their audience.  Whether singing their own gentle love songs and vivid ballads, telling tall tales or offering treasures from America’s vast traditional song bag, a Mustard’s Retreat show always feels like it’s designed for the people who have come to see them that day, in that coffeehouse, school, concert hall or festival.  Audiences sense this from the moment David and Michael hit the stage, are drawn to it like hungry kids to Sunday supper and reward it the best way they know now. They come to see Mustard’s Retreat again and again. And again.

From 5:00-8:00, as the June evenings begin to feel the approaching Summer’s heat, the music of Rick Hicks band will make a perfect way to kick off the Summer with a blast of the blues that’s been seasoned with a bit of Motown.

Rick Hick’s Band from Muskegon, will be providing a flavorful mix of Blues and Motown Sounds to get your dancing on.  Rick Hicks is Michigan’s answer to BB King, Wes Montgomery, and Albert King. He is a warm, versatile guitar/vocalist and his band performs a mix of high energy blues, Funk, soul, jazz, Motown and R & B.  Hicks’ quartet is well known around the state and his band was the featured concert that closed the 2012 Manitou Music Festival Series. He enjoyed the low-key setting, crowd diversity and feedback, and the freedom to play a varied set list, he said. The group covers everything from R & B to rock’n’roll and “definitely the blues” — plus crowd requests.

Admission is $15 per person, which includes an all-day wrist band and four tickets to use toward the purchase of beverages. Food Vendors will be collecting cash for small or larger plates ranging from $5 to about $8. Besides fabulous slow-cooked BBQ options, included this year are some chicken and veggie options!  So Come for the music, Come for the food…or just come for the fun….because there will be plenty of that.
