Performed by Anne-Marie Oomen and Beach Bards and Co. Anne-Marie is a local author and former Creative Writing Department Chair at Interlochen Center for the Arts. The Beach Bards led by Norm Wheeler have been performing in song and prose weekly for years in Glen Arbor and are joined by Dave Early and musicians Gary Worden\, John Phillips\, and Michael Sullivan. *Bring a blanket or chair. Come early and picnic on the grounds. \nBrought to you by Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear with a grant from the Michigan Humanities Council\, and the Port Oneida Fair Committee. DESCRIPTION:Join Park Rangers and astronomers from the Grand Traverse Astronomical Society (GTAS) on Saturday\, June 24 at the Dune Climb parking lot. On this date\, two events offer you opportunities to focus on the sky. The first event is from 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM\, and will allow visitors to safely view our closest star\, the Sun\, using a solar telescope. The second event will be from 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM\, and is a great chance to view distant galaxies and star clusters\, as well as the evening planets of Jupiter and Saturn. Please park in the row furthest from the dunes with your headlights facing M-109.The event will be cancelled for inclement weather or if the stars are not visible due to cloudy weather conditions. Complete all of the activities and earn your official Junior Ranger patch. \nJunior Ranger Day activities will take place 3:00-6:00 p.m. Visitors will meet park staff at the Dune Climb parking area for this free event. Families are welcome to come and go\, but plan to spend one hour with park rangers to earn a Junior Ranger badge. For your safety\, visitors are encouraged to consider personal comfort needs and bring water\, sunscreen\, and appropriate footwear. Please note\, participants will be asked to sign a photo/video release. \nJunior Ranger Day event is free with a park pass. Passes may be purchased at the Phillip A. Hart Visitor Center in Empire\, Michigan\, and cost $15 (per vehicle) for seven days\, or $30 for an annual pass.

DESCRIPTION:Rangers and staff at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore will be presenting short films from a number of National Park Service sites December 17th at 12:00pm. This two day film festival will be the final event in our centennial celebration of the National Park Service. \nThe National Park Service will be finishing out the 2016 centennial year with 413 individual park sites. These sites encompass some of the most beautiful and important natural\, cultural and historical resources in the United States. Explore some of these treasured places in a series of National Park Service Films\, each film a reflection of a different national park or national heritage location from around the country. The festival will be held December 17th at the Phillip A. Hart Visitor Center in Empire\, MI\, starting at 12:00 pm and lasting approximately 2 ½ hours. There is no charge for this program and visitors are welcome to watch as many or few films as they like.

The BioBlitz is a time for\nscientists\, students\, teachers\, families\, and park visitors to team up to identify as many organisms as\npossible. \nInterested visitors should sign up ahead of time to choose a hike with an expert\, allowing them to\nlearn about the intriguing plant and animal species they might find. All hikers will meet at the Dune\nClimb parking lot at their assigned time. \nSign-up details are available at\nhttps://ceruleancenter.org/bioblitz. Visitors may also use the iNaturalist smartphone app to explore\nthe National Lakeshore on their own. \nThe Lakeshore’s event is called “Blitz the Bear\,” and marks the launch of the Great Lakes Bioblitz\,\nan initiative led by the National Lakeshore’s partner\, the Cerulean Center\, to study biodiversity in the\nGreat Lakes region. Space is limited\, so interested parties should register early to secure a spot.\nCitizen scientists and environmental stewards of all ages are needed. \nBlitz the Bear is free with a park pass. Passes may be purchased at the Philip A. Hart Visitor Center\nin Empire\, or at the Dune Climb fee booth. SUMMARY:Free Find Your Park Concert-- Lukas Krolikowski\, Classical Guitarist
DESCRIPTION:– On Thursday\, September 1\, visitors to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (National Lakeshore) can listen to classical guitarist and composer Lukas Krolikowski at the Platte River Campground Amphitheater. Krolikowski will be performing from 8:00 to 9:00 p.m.\, and the concert is free with a park pass. \n  \nKrolikowski will present a program featuring original works written and inspired by northwestern Michigan and Sleeping Bear Dunes\, as well as a few traditional pieces from his classical guitar repertoire. \n  \nIn August of 2015\, Krolikowski quit his teaching job in central Illinois\, and moved with his wife Renée and their cat Boris to the Traverse City area. The pieces that will be performed during the concert were written during this transition. \n  \nAll concerts are free with a park pass. Passes may be purchased at the Phillip A.
