SUMMARY:Kraitz Cabin Volunteer Preservation Project
DESCRIPTION:June 23-25  Thurs-Sat.   Kraitz Cabin Volunteer preservation project 9 am – 4 pm This is the oldest structure on the mainland in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.  The replacement of deteriorated logs will have been completed by our log restoration contractor. In this project\, volunteers will re-build the roof and loft floor and clean up around the cabin. Come for as many days or hours as you are able. Construction skills helpful. Wear close-toed shoes\, bring a lunch and water. M-22 to Bohemian rd. south on left.

Step into the new exhibit that tells the the heritage of Port Oneida\, from how the settlers arrived here in the 1800s\, where they came from\, and the evolution of occupations in Port Oneida. Where did Port Oneida residents go?  Why did they leave? What is happening with Port Oneida today? Come learn and enjoy the activities during the day.

DESCRIPTION:Barn Restoration Workshop – June 13-18\nThe park will again be hosting our barn restoration workshop June 13-18th at the John Burfiend Barn located on Port Oneida Road\, four (4) miles north of Glen Arbor\, Michigan on M-22.   This year marks the 20th year of the partnership between the Michigan Barn Preservation Network and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in developing this series of “hands-on” workshops.  The park and the Michigan Barn Preservation Network are providing the skilled labor to put on this workshop.\n \nThe workshop will address repairing “Barn Floors and Hewn Building Sills and Floor Joists”.  The John Burfiend Barn was the site of the first park and Michigan Barn Preservation Network workshop in 1997.  The course will include 1) basics about structural and load analysis for floors and sills\, 2) repair of rough sawn floor boards\, floor joist and\, 3) repair and installation of hewn sills\, 4) exterior siding repair\, and 5) tool safety while completing the task presented.  This workshop is again able to provide a unique experience for all participants.\n \nThe course is set up so participants receive “hands on” training of all techniques.  The workshop begins on site at 9:00 a.m. each day.  There is no cost to participants. Tools and materials will be provided.  Participants should wear boots\, gloves\, and bring a sack lunch for each day that they attend.  Participants can sign up for any number of days.\n \nWorkers are not required to be skilled in the building trades\, though experience will be helpful and appreciated.  The purpose of the workshop is to teach the techniques and train owners and those interested how to do restoration work on timber and frame structures\, including concrete and stonework.  Past workshop attendees have ranged in age from 7 to 75 with each contributing their own unique skills to the project.\n \nCampsites will be provided for those volunteers who wish to camp for those days they are signed up for the workshop.  Please indicate on the form\, by email\, or when you call to sign up. \n \nInterested parties should contact the park historical architect\, Kimberly Mann (231)326-4771\, to sign up for the workshop.  To sign up by email:  kimberly_mann@nps.gov

DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, September 26 from 12 – 4 p.m\nOrchards\, historic apple varieties\, and more can be discovered during a special antique apple event at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore on Saturday\, September 26 from noon to 4:00 p.m.\n\nThe event will be held at the Kelderhouse farm located on Port Oneida Road.  The Port Oneida Rural Historic District is located along M-22\, 13.1 miles north of Empire or about 3 miles north of Glen Arbor. \nGuided programs will begin on the hour.  \nWalk the orchards with a Park Ranger\, visit a “nursery\,” learn about grafting with the experts\, and enjoy this visual taste of history.\n\nAll public programs offered by the National Lakeshore are free.  Participants need only purchase the Park Entrance Pass or have an Annual Pass displayed in their vehicle to join in the fun.  This event is the perfect opportunity to “Find Your Park” in the farms of Port Oneida.

Harbor Hwy in Port Oneida. \n Friday and Saturday\,  August 7-8\, 2015\n \n 10:00 am – 4:00  \nEvery August\, the Port Oneida Rural Historic District awakens from its peaceful slumber and comes alive with activity true to the period when it was a community of robust settlers. \nVisitors take a  step back in time at the two-day Port Oneida Fair to experience life as it was in the late 1800s and early 1900s. \nTake the trolley\, hike\, bike or drive (if you must!) to the select historic sites where a variety of traditional rural crafts and activities take place.  Over 100 demonstrators will be hard at work. \nChildren can try their hand at crosscut sawing and other farm implements. Oxen cut hay in the fields while artists create paintings inspired by the cultural landscape. Take in a display of antique bicycles\, cameras and phonographs. Learn about basket weaving\, soapmaking\, buttermaking\, candle dipping\, spinning\, and fur trapping. First come\, first serve!  \nThere is not a children’s price – we recommend to buy a full dinner and divide it for children.  We’re happy to help make the split. \nMusic and Dancing\nWe’ll have great music again by the Northport Community Band to entertain you during dinner for some toe-tapping fun!  And definitely stay to dance to  down-home fiddle music.

(and the lighthouses\, log cabins\, inns…actually all of the amazing 366 historic properties in the Park)! + Kid’s1/4 mile Schoolhouse Dash \nThe 5th annual 5K run/walk through the beautiful scenery of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore supports preservation of the Park’s historic resources. The Port Oneida Run is a challenging 5K trail run (or just a beautiful walk) on the Bayview Trail offering a unique tour of the Port Oneida Rural Historic District – “one of the most prized historic landscapes in the country”!  The course is a loop which meanders  through the flat fields and yes\, some hills\, of the pastoral landscape of farmsteads from the late 1800s. \nRegistration: Online at www.phsb.org  or at the Olsen Farm 4 Miles North of Glen Arbor at 3164 W. harbor Hwy. (M-22_ \nCost: Pre-registration by 5 pm July 31st is $27       After July 31st $32 \n8:30 am Children start the day off with1/4 mile Schoolhouse Dash from the Olsen barn to the historic one-room schoolhouse on the Bayview trail. \n9:00 5K Begins \nAwards: 3 deep in 9 age categories. \n\nPrizes – must be present to win! We’ll be drawing names for some nice prizes donated by our great local merchants!
