SUMMARY:4th of July Flag Raising Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Join community members of all ages in celebrating the founding of our nation in a joyous and patriotic ceremony\, 10 am\, July 4th at Old Settlers Picnic Grounds on Glen Lake. The traditional raising of the flag by the Glen Lake Fire Department will be led by Chief Bryan Ferguson and will be followed by a singalong of well-loved and familiar patriotic songs.  \nGene Kelly\, the featured speaker\, is an author\, retired business owner\, and decorated Army veteran. His speech\, “You Can Help!\,” will explore what we can do to improve our local community as well as our country. He will open with a story by Richard “Dick” Grout about veterans and school children.  Dick\, a decorated World War II veteran\, passed away at the age of 104\, on December 19th\, 2024. Mr Kelly’s most recent book\, Three American Men\, is available exclusively at the Cottage Book Store in Glen Arbor.  \nPastor Melody Olin of Empire United Methodist Church will deliver the Invocation\, and Rob Hansen\, Head of the Leelanau School\, will read the Declaration of Independence.  \nPlease bring your own lawn chairs. The event is sponsored by the Glen Lake Woman’s Club. After the program the chapel at Old Settlers Park will be open for tours.

Before he began working at the Leelanau Enterprise in 1998\, he served for 25 years in the United States Marine Corps as a combat correspondent and a public affairs officer.  He is a veteran of the Vietnam War\, the Persian Gulf War\, and the Somali Civil War.   \nThe Flag Raising Ceremony begins at 10 am\, July 4th\, at the Old Settlers Picnic Grounds\, located on the southeastern shore of Glen Lake near the corner of Dunn’s Farm Rd. DESCRIPTION:This historic picnic happens annually\, on the 1st Sunday in August\, now in it’s 123rd year!\nThis year\, the Old Settlers Picnic falls on Sunday\, August 2nd\, 2015. All are welcome to attend. \nIt begins with a Worship Service at 10:30 AM. The event includes live music and dancing on the Gazebo\, a car show\, some assorted crafters and demonstrations. At 12:00pm the Masonic Temple serves a picnic lunch. \nThe Old Settlers Picnic Association has a meeting after lunch\, All are welcome to attend and participate! \n\nBackground: It all started when Kasson Freeman came to the area. He had a friend in Glen Arbor\, Mr. Fisher. They had a picnic at this park to celebrate Mr. Fisher’s birthday in 1892. Everyone enjoyed the summer gathering so much that it turned into an annual event that’s been organized each year since! \n

An old fashion shingle mill from the 1800’s demonstrates the making of shingles. At noon the Masonic Temple serves a barbeque lunch.
