DESCRIPTION:The Glen Arbor Art Association (GAAA) celebrates Spring’s return with an art history talk exploring the Post-Impressionists on Thursday\, May 11 at the Leelanau School\, 1 Old Homestead Road\, Glen Arbor. An optional Provençal-themed luncheon at blu restaurant is available. \nGAAA’s popular art lecturer Linda Young and Randy Chamberlain\, chef-owner of the Glen Arbor restaurant blu\, will explore the art and lives of the Post-Impressionists. The art history talk will be complemented by a three-course luncheon at blu\, 5705 S. Lake St.\, inspired by the Cézanne and the Provençal Table cookbook\, and prepared by Chamberlain. Young’s talk will highlight the life and work of key Post-Impressionist artists including Paul Cézanne\, Vincent Van Gogh\, Georges Seurat\, Paul Gauguin and Henri Rousseau. Participants choose either the morning/10:15 a.m. option or the afternoon/2 p.m. option. The cost for the lecture and lunch is $40/GAAA members\, $55/non-members. Lecture-only fee is $15. \nLecture/luncheon class size is limited to 50. There is no limit on the number who may register for the morning or afternoon lecture-only option. SUMMARY:Mostly Music presents “The Big Bands Never Left…the Audience Went Somewhere Else”
DESCRIPTION:Get behind the scenes with the “Mostly Music” series continuing in January 2017. The “Mostly Music” series is a winter extension of the Manitou Music Festival. “Mostly Music” is hosted by Bob Foskett\, who programmed jazz radio in Chicago for 30 years and is now a DJ for Friday Morning Jazz at WNMC in Traverse City. Programs will be roughly 60% music\, 40% discussion. There are programs in January\, February\, and March and if you enjoy watching and listening to live music\, “Mostly Music” provides an opportunity to get some “behind-the-scenes” information too. Plus it’s another way to escape cabin fever in the throes of winter. \n  \nThe first session of Mostly Music’s winter series is a lecture with recorded examples of the continuing metamorphosis of the jazz big band in American music.  As American tastes in popular music changed in the 1950’s\, the big bands\, which were considered the core of American popular and dance music until then\, seemed to be on their way to extinction. \nHowever\, creative musicians and changes in music education not only revived the big band concept\, but nurtured it to the point that today there are more big bands playing jazz than during the heydays of the 30’s and 40’s….by at least a thousand fold!  GAAA’s resident jazz nut Bob Foskett will trace and explain that development.

SUMMARY:The Glen Arbor Art Association’s Talk About Art series with Kaz McCue this Sunday
DESCRIPTION:In the TALK ABOUT ART ® series\, our host conducts live interviews with local and regional artists about their art making and thinking. These insightful interviews take place monthly\, January-May\, at no charge. Our current host\, Norm Wheeler\, recently retired from teaching Science and English for 32 years at the Leelanau School. He is the Director of the Lanphier Observatory\, hosting public stargazing two nights a week in summer on Sleeping Bear Bay. The co-founder and continuing host of the Beach Bards Bonfire\, a gathering for by heart poetry\, storytelling\, and music on Friday nights in high summer at the Leelanau School Beach. He also helped Crispin Campbell\, Ben Bricker\, and Tom Fordyce build the first stage behind the Lake St. Studio for the first season of the Manitou Music Festival many years ago. Admission is Free. \nKaz McCue has spent the past twenty-five years working in the arts as a visual artist\, educator\, curator\, and arts administrator. He holds a BFA in photography from Parson’s School of Design and an MFA in mixed media from Long Island University/ C.W. Post Campus. Kaz has received numerous grants and awards and has exhibited his work nationally and internationally. As a curator\, he has put together over 200 exhibitions and over 100 lectures and artist presentations. Kaz has taught at numerous universities\, colleges and academies and has served in several arts administration positions. \nAs a professional\, Kaz has dedicated his life to the arts. His enthusiasm and dedication has helped to define his career and his belief in the power of the arts has driven his commitment to participating in the process of the arts and mentoring young artists. Kaz is currently an Instructor of Visual Arts at the Leelanau School in Glen Arbor and he also serves as the Artistic Director at Michigan Legacy Art Park.

SUMMARY:Winter Songs & Carols
DESCRIPTION:Local chamber ensemble Manitou Winds will present an encore performance of their annual Winter Songs & Carols concert on Friday\, December 9\, at 7:30 p.m. As part of the Glen Arbor Art Association’s Manitou Music Festival\, the concert will be held at The Leelanau School in Glen Arbor. Admission is also free\, and a freewill offering will be collected to benefit music and art programs at The Leelanau School. \nSongs of Advent\, winter solstice\, and Christmas will intertwine with poetry and prose\, setting a reflective mood to kick off the holiday season. Five musicians\, nine different instruments will create a colorful collage of musical textures and styles. Two guest vocalists— Christy Burich and Emily Curtin Culler—will join the ensemble for five of the songs. \nIn their final collaboration for the year\, Frankfort artist Ellie Harold will partner with the ensemble. Ellie will display a special exhibition of works inspired by the concert theme at the concert venue.

DESCRIPTION:The Annual Mother’s Day Brunch at The Leelanau School on Sunday\, May 10th!\nOpen to the Public!\n\nThis is a joint project between our school and the Glen Lake School’s National Honor Society.\n\nThe brunch runs from 11-2 pm and includes an assortment of great items like local\, high quality ham\, turkey\, assorted sides\, hot and cold vegetables\, fruit salad\, assorted pastries\, juices\, and Leelanau Coffee Roasters coffee.\n\nThis event proceeds go to the Habitat for Humanity.\n\nIt is very affordable at a price of $15 for adults\, $10 for children from 5-12\, and is free for children under 5.  No advance reservations are taken\, you can pay at the door.

SUMMARY:Rock The River Concert
DESCRIPTION:Grupo Ayé is the perfect choice to headline for “Rock the River\,” The Leelanau School’s benefit concert. Much more than a Cuban salsa band\, the group has crafted its own cultural identity by incorporating various genres including Latin jazz\, merengue and mambo\, among others. The band also takes pride in their showmanship; making shows a complete experience for their audiences. Robert Mulligan\, who heads the band\, is a Leelanau alumnus\, who studied percussion at the Interlochen Arts Academy for a year and went on to further study jazz and percussion. Fluent in Spanish\, he has also spent time traveling through Latin America and Spain\, helping him expand his musical and cultural knowledge. Individual band members have put in time with orchestras\, worked with individuals such as Aretha Franklin and taught music at the college level. “The band’s got quite the resume\,” Mulligan said\, “I’m very fortunate to be surrounded by talented artists such as this.” Grupo Ayé is one of the most unique bands in the Midwest. \nThe Friends of The Leelanau School and the Glen Arbor Art Association are working on this event together to raise community awareness of the school; the unique education it offers and its importance to the Glen Arbor area. Featuring a former graduate and his exceptional band is an excellent place to start and provides an opportunity to highlight some of the success students of the school achieve. \nAlong with the music on the green at The Leelanau School\, Mexican food will be available for purchase. You are invited to bring friends and family for an evening of listening\, dancing and picnicking on the shores of the Crystal River.
