SUMMARY:"The Sky Is Always There" - Exhibit Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:The Glen Arbor Arts Center looks overhead with its first exhibit of 2025\, The Sky Is Always There. This juried exhibit opens January 10 with a reception\, 5-8 pm in the gallery. \nThe Sky Is Always There is an exhibition that moves beyond direct representation\, beyond portraits of puffy clouds. Applicants were asked to consider the sky from its atmospheric characteristic to its mythic history. Is the sky so familiar that we forget to consider it? Is the sky just more psychic wallpaper? These are some of the creative prompts exhibitors will interpret. \nMore information about The Sky Is Always There can be found on the GAAC website: GlenArborArt.org / EXHIBITS The exhibition runs through March 20. The GAAC is open during the week 9 am – 3 pm\, and on Saturday noon – 4 pm.

SUMMARY:Coffee with the Authors: An Artist's Pilgrimage
DESCRIPTION:Frankfort painter Ellie Harold traveled to Paris in 2022\, a pilgrimage to view an exhibition of paintings by Impressionist Claude Monet and Abstract Expressionist Joan Mitchell. The souvenirs from that trip weren’t T-shirts and tote bags\, but questions\, including: What does it mean to be a “real” artist? Harold explores that question in the resulting book\, Monet\, Mitchell & Me: A Painter’s Pilgrimage. She talks about how she answered that question at the September 29 Coffee With The Authors conversation\, 1 pm at the Glen Arbor Arts Center. \nHarold’s book is a meditation on her struggles with creative block\, about practice\, process\, and why she’d rather make work than look at it in a museum. Monet\, Mitchell & Me is the story of Harold’s journey into the valley of art historical giants\, and the side trips into the interior of her own\, artistic country. \nCoffee With The Authors is a series of conversational interviews with local and regional authors about the craft and process of writing. This program is offered as part of the GAAC’s Shrines + Altars\, an exhibition that explores what we hold sacred: To whom are we building shrines? At what altars are we worshipping? The program is free. For more information go to GlenArborArt.org /EVENTS.

SUMMARY:Coffee with the Authors: Teresa Scollon
DESCRIPTION:Coffee With The Authors is a live\, conversational interview with local and regional authors about the craft and process of writing. On September 14 Traverse City poet and teacher Teresa Scollon talks about To Embroider The Ground With Prayer\, a collection of poems considering her father’s illness\, death\, and the Michigan farming community in which she was raised. Sarah Bearup-Neal\, GAAC gallery manager\, leads the conversation. The interview begins at 1 pm.\nTo Embroider The Ground With Prayer is a dynamic group of poems. Scollon writes in a wide range of poetic styles and voices\, moving between reverence and irreverence with agility\, skill\, and a keen\, loving eye for the perfect details. As Scollon writes\, “To capture story is one way of giving thanks\, of paying attention\, to know where we are.” She’ll break that down\, and talk about the process of building a collection of thematically-linked poems that tell a singular\, personal story.\nThis Coffee With The Authors interview is part of the GAAC’s Shrines + Altars project\, an exploration of what\, where\, and how we direct our worshipful attention – secular\, non-secular\, sacred\, and profane. Read more about Shrines + Altars at GlenArborArt.org /EXHIBITS. Coffee With The Authors is offered without charge. SUMMARY:Coffee with the Authors: Jennifer Sperry Steinorth
DESCRIPTION:Coffee With The Authors is a live\, conversational interview with local and regional authors about the craft and process of writing. On August 18 Traverse City poet and teacher Jennifer Sperry Steinorth discusses Her Read\, a book-length collage poem. In the tradition of reusing canvases\, Steinorth appropriates a seminal text\, The Meaning of Art by Herbert Read (Faber & Faber\, 1931)\, and with the liberal use of correction fluid\, scalpel and embroidery floss\, erases and transforms the book from art criticism into feminist verse. Sarah Bearup-Neal\, GAAC gallery manager\, leads the conversation. The interview begins at 1 pm. \nSteinorth is the author of three published books of poetry\, numerous broadsides\, handmade books and more. She is a lecturer at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor\, and a 2023-2024 Beinecke Fellow at Yale where she is at work on a biography of American poet\, C.D. Wright. \nThis Coffee With The Authors interview is part of the GAAC’s Shrines + Altars project\, an exploration of what\, where\, and how we direct our worshipful attention – secular\, non-secular\, sacred\, and profane. Read more about Shrines + Altars at GlenArborArt.org /EXHIBITS. Coffee With The Authors is offered without charge. SUMMARY:Shrines + Altars
DESCRIPTION:Shrines + Altars\nExhibition: August 16 – October 24\, 2024 \nThe Glen Arbor Arts Center’s next exhibit\, Shrines + Altars\, is an exploration of what we hold sacred: To whom are we building shrines? At what altars are we worshipping? This exhibit opens August 16 with a 5-8 pm reception. \nIn the most conventional sense\, a shrine is a holy place in which sacred relics are housed. An altar is a table or platform for the presentation of offerings or other ritualized presents. Both offer ways to create space for memory\, reverence\, reflection. Exhibitors have taken these thoughts to heart\, and created unexpected solutions to the creative problem. \nFor more information about the exhibit and its companion programs – artist interviews\, book discussions\, and the ongoing creation of a public shrine in the gallery – go to GlenArborArt.org/EXHIBITS. The GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor.

SUMMARY:AI + The Arts: Just A Tool?
DESCRIPTION:The Glen Arbor Arts Center celebrates human handwork in a time of machine dominance in its By Hand project. On May 4\, the GAAC will host a panel discussion of generative artificial intelligence [AI]\, and its incursion into the arts. Visual artists Randy Melick\, Tim Nielsen\, Rufus Snoddy\, and writer Bob Butz will talk about the role of AI in their work. The discussion begins at 1 pm and is facilitated by Anne Stanton\, National Writers Series executive director\, and Sarah Bearup-Neal\, GAAC gallery manager.\nIt is often asserted that AI is just a tool. In the May 4 discussion\, the panel will explore a range of questions including their experience with AI; and weigh in on whether or not it’s a benign “tool.” Is AI art “art”? How does AI change the way we understand the visual and literary arts? What purpose does AI serve in the arts? What’s the purpose of turning over human creative work to a machine? What are the harms? Melick and Snoddy teach visual art and art history at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City. Nielsen is the former president of Nielsen Design Group\, Traverse City\, and now a studio practitioner. Butz worked for 20 years as a freelance writer\, and is now the Senior Creative Copywriter and Creative Strategist for the Wisconsin-based Vortex Optics.\n.\nThis By Hand program is free. The GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. The By Hand project runs March 29 – May 30. The By Hand project enjoys the support of a Michigan Humanities Bridging Michigan grant. It is comprised of a series of visual art exhibitions and community conversations. For more information go to GlenArborArt.org / EVENTS.

SUMMARY:Music BY HAND
DESCRIPTION:The Glen Arbor Arts Center celebrates human handwork in its By Hand project. On April 20\, musicians Martha Meek and Laura Hood will talk about the value and joy of making music by hand. Meek is the director of the Martha Meek Music Studio in Suttons Bay. Hood teaches music\, and chairs The Leelanau School art department. The program begins at 1 pm.\nContemporary music is often about consuming\, rather than creating\, and more often the result of digital enhancements and electronic additions. In this program Meek and Hood will talk about what happens in the brain when people make music\, how playing an instrument – whether stringed\, brass or produced with the vocal cords – enhances and enriches life. A group of Leelanau School music students will also take part in the discussion\, and talk about their experience as hand music makers.\nThis By Hand program is free. The GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. The By Hand project runs March 29 – May 30\, and is comprised of a series of visual art exhibitions and community conversations. SUMMARY:Architecture BY HAND
DESCRIPTION:In an age of machine dominance\, the Glen Arbor Arts Center celebrates the human hand in its By Hand project. On April 13\, Traverse City architect Ken Richmond\, and Steve Stier\, a Benzie County resident who is an expert in historic barn restoration\, talk about the relevance of hand work in the creation of contemporary and historic architecture. The program begins at 1 pm.\nWhen Richmond attended architecture school at Notre Dame University in the 1980s\, he drafted all his structures with pencil and paper\, a practice he continues today. Stier\, a driving force behind the restoration of the Leelanau Poor Farm Barn\, focuses on barns built in the period between 1840 and 1940. He has built a career restoring buildings designed and erected before modern technology and computer-assisted design. During the program\, the conversation will touch on why both these people continue to work by hand\, how the human hand enhances the creative process\, and remains relevant and essential to human life.\nThis By Hand program is free. The GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. The By Hand project runs March 29 – May 30\, and is comprised of a series of visual art exhibitions and community conversations. SUMMARY:Coffee with the Authors: The Letter League
DESCRIPTION:Coffee With The Authors is a live\, conversational interview with local and regional authors about the craft and process of writing. The 2024 series kicks off April 6\, 1 am at the Glen Arbor Arts Center with Heather Spooner\, owner of Ampersand Lettering Lab\, an art and hand lettering business in Traverse City. Spooner will talk about The Letter League\, an adult pen pal project she created to encourage writing letters by hand during the COVID pandemic. Sarah Bearup-Neal\, GAAC gallery manager\, leads the conversation. \nThe Letter League is the story of finding human connection during the pandemic. When Spooner launched the idea in April 2020\, the response was immediate\, and enthusiastic. In that time\, Spooner has connected more than 550 letter writers from around the world with one another. The Letter League also caught the attention of Los Angeles filmmaker Michelle Boyaner of Greenie Films\, and a documentary about “stories of connection in a disconnected time” was created. During Coffee With The Authors Spooner will talk about hand-written letters sent by the post office\, and the documentary’s April 27\, Traverse City premiere at the Dennos Museum Center. \nThis Coffee With The Authors interview is part of the GAAC’s By Hand project\, an exploration of making and creating by hand in a time of machine dominance. The project runs March 29 – May 30. Read more about By Hand at GlenArborArt.org /EXHIBITS. Coffee With The Authors is supported by the Cottage Book Shop and the Glen Lake Community Library. SUMMARY:By Hand Project
DESCRIPTION:Human hands with their dexterous\, opposable thumbs have allowed us to innovate\, to use tools\, to become nimble\, skillful\, creative\, and artful makers. The Glen Arbor Arts Center By Hand project is a consideration of the myriad ways in which the human hand is intrinsic to creative work; and a demonstration of what human hands can make. The By Hand project runs March 29 – May 30\, 2024\, and offers a range of programs that explore this theme through the visual\, performing\, architectural\, and literary arts. \nIn a time of machine dominance\, there is case to be made that right now is the perfect moment to celebrate making-by-hand. The By Hand project challenges this techno-centric time with these programs: \n•	By Hand\, the exhibition\, March 29 – May 30\n•	Coffee With the Authors | The Letter League\, April 6\, 1 pm\n•	By Hand: Architecture\, April 13\, 1 pm\n•	By Hand: Making Music\, April 20\, 1 pm\n•	By Hand: Artificial Intelligence In The Arts\, May 4\, 1 pm \nFor more information about all the By Hand programs go to GlenArborArt.org / EXHIBITS. All programs are free. The GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor.

SUMMARY:Walk + Talk The Exhibits
DESCRIPTION:A guided walk-and-talk through the Glen Arbor Arts Center’s new exhibit\, Happy\, takes place January 27\, 1 pm. Sarah Bearup-Neal\, GAAC gallery manager\, leads a conversational tour of the exhibit. Happy explores how 26 visual artists interpret the many facets and meanings of happiness: literal to metaphorical\, in 2D + 3D. \nThe Walk + Talk will also include conversation about Tree Of Life | Connecting The World\, a mixed media installation by Traverse City artist Mary Fortuna. This small show runs January 5 – April 25\, 2024 in the GAAC Lobby Gallery. \nNo one walks into a gallery and fully understands what the exhibiting artists intended to say with their work. During this one-hour program\, Bearup-Neal will talk about both exhibits’ themes; shed light on artists’ statements; and explore how artists use materials to communicate meaning; or make an idea more dynamic. Visitors will leave with a fuller understanding\, and appreciation of the exhibit. \nThe Walk + Talk is free. The GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor.
