SUMMARY:Exhibition Talk: HIStory/HERstory: Who's Story?
DESCRIPTION:Four visual artists exhibiting work in the Glen Arbor Arts Center’s HIStory / HERstory: Whose Story exhibition talk about the power of the visual arts to take on difficult subjects. This facilitated discussion is October 4\, 1 pm in the GAAC’s Main Gallery. \nThe HIStory / HERstory exhibition critically examines the power of voice. It digs into the idea that the victors write history while other histories are ignored\, deleted\, denied\, left out of the official record. Artists Margo Burian\, Mary Fortuna\, Todd Lininger\, and Stephanie Schlatter approached these ideas from feminist\, judicial\, and mythologic avenues. The discussion\, facilitated by GAAC Gallery Manager Sarah Bearup-Neal\, will delve into how these artist use visual language to translate difficult subjects\, and the psychic and emotional benefits of being able to speak through one’s creative work. \nMore information about the HIStory/HERstory exhibition can be found online: GlenArborArt.org / EXHIBITS. The panel discussion is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Artist in Residence Talk: Shanna Robinson
DESCRIPTION:PRESS RELEASE \nContact:\nScott Bouma\nExecutive Director\nGlen Arbor Arts Center\n231 2334-6112\ndirector@glenarborart.org \nBoyne City artist Shanna Robinson’s Glen Arbor Arts Center residency is an exploration of two familiar materials that don’t usually go together: clay and fiber\, woven. Robinson talks about her reasons why\, and how she brings both together in this during a public presentation on October 2\, 10 am at the Glen Arbor Arts Center. The talk is open to the public at no charge.\n“My goal for this residency is to explore opportunities to connect two bodies of knowledge\, fibers and ceramics\,” Robinson said. “I plan to pursue two approaches to connecting these materials. The first is to delve into the possibility of ceramic forms as looms\, or less formally\, structures that can act as supports for weaving. The second is to make a series of smallish clay pieces that can be woven into my fiber work adding texture and sound.”\nThe GAAC has been hosting visiting artmakers as part of its residency program since the 1990s. SUMMARY:Gallery Walk + Talk: Art And Health
DESCRIPTION:September 28 | 1 pm\nJoin a guided conversation of the Glen Arbor Arts Center’s current exhibit\, HIStory/HERstory:\nWhose Story?\, on September 28\, 1 pm. GAAC Gallery Manager Sarah Bearup-Neal leads a Walk + Talk of the exhibition as part of Creative Wellness Month\, a program exploring the intersection of creativity and well-being.\nThe HISTory/HERstory exhibition poses questions about whose voice defines the message\,\nand what happens – socially\, communally\, personally — when other voices are muted or\nsilenced. During this Walk + Talk\, Bearup-Neal will focus on exhibitors’ visual responses to those questions\, and the beneficial effects of being able to express difficult feelings through a visual vocabulary.\nAs part of the GAAC’s month-long focus on creative wellness\, this event highlights the healing potential of visual storytelling\, and the way art fosters dialogue\, empathy\, and personal clarity. Engaging with art — whether through viewing\, discussion\, or creating — can be a powerful tool for mental and emotional health.\nIn addition\, the September 28 Walk + Talk will include a conversation about Something To\nSmile About\, a selection of paintings and collages by Carol C Spaulding in the Lobby Gallery.\nRead more about both exhibits here.\nThis event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Artist in Residence Talk: Nicholas Hill
DESCRIPTION:PRESS RELEASE \nContact:\nScott Bouma\nExecutive Director\nGlen Arbor Arts Center\n231 2334-6112\ndirector@glenarborart.org \nOhio artist Nicholas Hill brings the 19th century to his Glen Arbor Arts Center residency in September. Hill\, a resident of Granville\, Ohio\, has developed a practice around the combining of intaglio printmaking and cyanotype photography\, a plein air approach to cameraless photography. Hill will talk about the resulting collages he’ll make while in Northern Michigan at a presentation on September 18\, 10 am. The program takes place at the GAAC and is open to the public at no charge.\n“I use the concept of ‘plein air’ in a distinctive manner\,” he said. “I work outside when creating plates and cyanotypes. I use the studio for the printing phase. I return to outside to create the finished collages. This use of direct observation is unique because I am creating the finished images as ‘printerly’ collages in nature.\nThe GAAC has been hosting visiting artmakers as part of its residency program since the 1990s. SUMMARY:‘Not Accepted: An Historical Look At Art Exhibition Rejection’
DESCRIPTION:Rejection from juried exhibitions is baked into the cake for artists who want to show their work. “Not Accepted: A Conversation About Rejection\,” a slide lecture\, delves into the topic. The lecture takes place at the Glen Arbor Arts Center on September 7\, 11 am. Tickets are $5 for GAAC members\, $10 for nonmembers. Reservations are required.\n“Not Accepted” explores rejection through the lens of two\, historic examples: the Paris Salon of 1863\, and the Third Reich’s suppression and destruction of visual art it considered “degenerate.” The topic also touches upon other issues: Who determines what is acceptable art? Whose voice is heard? And\, whose voice is erased? GAAC Gallery Manager Sarah Bearup-Neal leads the discussion.\nThe lecture is offered as part of the GAAC’s exhibition HIStory / HERstory: Whose Story? The show is on display in the GAAC Main Gallery through October 23. To reserve a ticket or for more information about the exhibit\, go to: GlenArborArt.org /EXHIBITS.

DESCRIPTION:PRESS RELEASE \nContact:\nScott Bouma\nExecutive Director\nGlen Arbor Arts Center\n231 2334-6112\ndirector@glenarborart.org \nAnn Arbor artist Liz Barick Fall’s practice focuses on mixed media assemblage\, creating installations that incorporate encaustic photos with vintage materials\, found objects and natural materials. But during her Glen Arbor Arts Center residency her “biggest goal is to explore mediums and methods that I don’t already employ.” Barick Fall will talk about her exploratory residency during a presentation on September 4\, 10 am. The program is open to the public at no charge.\n“With only two weeks and limited studio equipment\, I would explore simplified processes\, by bringing limited\, easily portable mediums and supplies\,” Barick Fall said.” I would use these in a less deliberate\, more spontaneous way than I usually do\, to catalog/document daily reflections and impressions of the area in and around Glen Arbor\, while taking photographs and collecting materials to use in future work.”\nThe GAAC has been hosting visiting artmakers as part of its residency program since the 1990s. SUMMARY:Coffee with the Authors
DESCRIPTION:PRESS RELEASE\nContact:\nScott Bouma\nExecutive Director\nGlen Arbor Arts Center\n231 / 334-6112\ndirector@glenarborart.org \n The Glen Arbor Arts Center’s third season of Coffee With The Authors is about building. And the next interview in the 2025 series is about building the history of a place\, in this case Glen Arbor Township: A History to 1920\, a new\, hardcover book edited by Andrew White; and written by Paul Dechow\, Mary Severson Tris\, Barbara Siepker\, and John Tris. The interview takes place August 24\, 11 am in the GAAC Main Gallery.\nPublished by Leelanau Press\, Glen Arbor Township surveys the geological\, social\, and human history of what became Glen Arbor Township\, a municipal designation encompassing 87.6 square miles of land and water. Over the course of 368 pages\, and drawing on original documents\, the five collaborating writers present a picture of this place\, starting with the glacial activities that lay the groundwork for the Land of Delight; the lifeway of the original inhabitants; followed by the commercial timbering era\, fruit orchards\, Glen Arbor’s early resorts\, and the accompanying population shifts. GAAC Gallery Manager Sarah Bearup-Neal will explore the mechanics of how a group of writers build a cohesive history\, and what current day residents can glean from the past.\nCoffee With The Authors is a series of conversational interviews with local\, regional\, and state authors about the art\, craft\, and process of writing. In these interviews\, Bearup-Neal talks with writers – poets\, essayists\, memoirists\, fiction writers\, historical fiction writers\, writers of creative non-fiction – and explores how writers work and think. There is no charge.\nCoffee With The Authors enjoys the support of the Cottage Book Shop and the Glen Lake Community Library.

DESCRIPTION:PRESS RELEASE \nContact:\nScott Bouma\nExecutive Director\nGlen Arbor Arts Center\n231 2334-6112\ndirector@glenarborart.org \nKalamazoo\, Michigan writer Lynne Heasley’s residency with the Glen Arbor Arts Center is bat-centric\, and a springboard for writing about the natural world and how it intersects with the human world. Heasley will talk about her essay-in-progress at a public presentation on August 21\, 10 am. The program is open to the public at no charge.\nDuring her residency\, Heasley will “develop a creative nonfiction environmental essay titled ‘I Remember the Bat Room’ \,” she said. The piece is the prologue for “reconsidering my grandparents’ dilapidated\, never-painted\, 1900 farm house in the 1960s and ‘70s — what its smells taught and might still teach about our relationships within more-than-human worlds; about transcendent meanings of ‘home’; about biodiversity in even humble places.”\nThe GAAC has been hosting visiting artmakers as part of its residency program since the 1990s. SUMMARY:HIStory / HERstory: Whose Story?
DESCRIPTION:PRESS RELEASE\nContact:\nScott Bouma\nExecutive Director\nGlen Arbor Arts Center\n231 334 6112\ndirector@glenarborart.org \nHIStory / HERstory: Whose Story? [August 15 – October 23\, 2025] \nThe Glen Arbor Arts Center takes on the question of history and voice in its next exhibition. HIStory/HERstory: Whose Story? is an exhibition that explores the idea that the victors have written history. This version of history has often been told from one perspective — while other histories have been ignored\, deleted\, denied\, left out of the official record. The exhibition opens August 15\, 5 pm with a reception in the GAAC Main Gallery. \nWhether it’s visual art\, literature\, film\, sports\, science\, politics\, education\, animal\, mineral\, real or imagined history\, this exhibition asks: \n•	Who’s telling what stories?\n•	Who’s included in the official record?\n•	Who’s excluded? Omitted? Erased? \nTwenty-four exhibitors take on these questions\, and answer them with work about what’s included in the art historical canon; a fractured telling of Native American history; the voices inside a mom’s head; and other topics. Read more about the exhibit\, and exhibition companion programs. View it online at GlenArborArt.org / EXHIBITS. HIStory / HERstory runs through October 23.
