DESCRIPTION:Painter Patricia Schaefer will discuss a new series of paintings that explore the human body and bodies of water she plans to create as part of her 2019 artist’s residency with the Glen Arbor Arts Center. The presentation is August 30\, noon at the GAAC\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. \nEach of the GAAC’s artists-in-residence gives a conversational overview of their residency. These presentations offer a chance to hear about the resident’s project\, and the process they experienced during their two-week stay. Schaefer’s GAAC residency was a chance to explore the overlay of the human body in the landscape – as well as ask questions about how human bodies and bodies of water intersect\, and explore the political\, environmental land existential questions that study prompts. SUMMARY:Gallery Talk: Scott Mills "Mapping Home"
DESCRIPTION:Scott Mills moved back to his childhood home of Maple City in 2014 after spending 10 years away. He quickly realized he needed to get reacquainted with his home turf. Mills talks about the tracking and mapping project he created to do just that on July 28\, 2 pm at the Glen Arbor Arts Center\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. This program is open to the public at no charge. \nIn order to reorient himself to the land and get reacquainted with the peninsula that called him back home from the Pacific Northwest\, Mills began walking the unmarked trails and remnant roads that thread through the forests and over the dunes nearby. These “old ways” and their histories so captivated him that he began to plot their routes on a map and describe his passages in writing. Repeated walks in all seasons exposed new dimensions to these old ways\, as well as older ways extending back to the Pleistocene. Mills continues to discover\, follow and map these ways\, and he is currently at work on a body of prose and poetry describing his ongoing passages. \n“Mapping Home” is offered in conjunction with the GAAC exhibition “New Views: Home/Place\,” in the GAAC gallery from June 7 – August 8. DESCRIPTION:JoAnne Cook – practicing attorney\, past Vice-President of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa/Chippewa Indians – teaches the history of her people\, and specializes in making this history relevant for non-native audiences. Cook comes to the Glen Arbor Arts Center with insights into the Anishinaabek people past and present on July 11\, 10 am. This program is open to the public at no charge. \nThe Anishinaabek people lived and thrived for thousands of years before first European contact in the Great Lakes regions of what are now known as Canada and the United States. Cook believes tradition and culture is vital to the Anishinaabek way of life\, and provides a look into how Anishinaabek life is nurtured and restored in modern times. She has presented to various communities on the way of life and culture of the Odawa. In addition\, Cook previously taught Business Law for Northwestern Michigan College (NMC)\, and a course at NMC Extended Educatio\, titled “Native Law and Culture.” JoAnne is currently teaching a short course\, “History of the Anishinaabek” for Northwestern Michigan College Extended Education. She lives in Peshawbestown. \nThis program is offered as part of the GAAC’s exhibition “New Views: Home/Place\,” an exploration of home and place identity. DESCRIPTION:More than 20 years ago Barbara Siepker\, a Glen Arbor book publisher with a keen interest in local history\, began a project to memorialize the heyday of summer resort and cottage life in the Glen Lake area. The result is the book Historic Cottages of Glen Lake. Siepker is joined by Traverse City architectural photographer Dietrich Floeter\, her collaborator\, to discuss the project on July 7\, 2 pm at the Glen Arbor Arts Center\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. This program is open to the public without charge. \nHistoric Cottages of Glen Lake\, first published in 2008\, is visually stunning coffee table book with images of 50 summer cottages. Siepker’s desire to commemorate these iconic dwellings was prompted by concern – as more cottages were torn down and replaced by modern lakefront structures\, Siepker feared the loss of important local history. Siepker and Floeter worked together to capture these old cottages’ visual memory\, and their contribution to the character of the locality. \nThis program is offered in conjunction with the GAAC exhibition “New Views: Home/Place\,” an exploration of home and place identity. DESCRIPTION:How does a shortage of housing in Northwest Michigan take its toll on residents and businesses? That question is the focus of an hour-long panel discussion June 11\, 10:30 am at the Glen Arbor Arts Center\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. This program is open to the public without charge. \nThe panel is composed of three housing advocates:\n   •Sarah Lucas\, executive director of the newly-created Housing North\, a Traverse City non-profit that supports stakeholders working to create housing in a 10-county area. \n   •Frank Clements\, volunteer member of the Leelanau County Housing Action Committee. \n   •Chris Frey\, volunteer development manager of Leelanau Reach. Creating homes for young families\, workers and other low- to middle-income residents is a multilayered challenge. Communities must grapple with new zoning ordinances as well as work through negative perceptions that accompany terms such as “affordable housing.” The GAAC panel will also explore how affordable housing contributes to the character and diversity of a community. \nThis project is offered in conjunction with the GAAC’s exhibition “New Views: Home/Place\,” an exploration of home and place identity. DESCRIPTION:An historic wind storm ripped through Leelanau County in early August 2015\, leveling acres of woodland\, forest\, and residential structures. The broken remains of sheds\, docks and other wood structures provided the raw materials for two young entrepreneurs to turn destruction into construction. Siblings Bella and Zack Pryor talk about the small business they created on July 21\, 2 pm at the Glen Arbor Arts Center\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. This program is open to public at no charge. \nBella Pryor\, 18 and a University of Michigan freshman\, and her brother Zach\, 15 established Michagain Signery in 2015. The duo salvaged storm-damaged wood and began creating iconic\, decorative signs. They built a small business\, the profits of which were directed back to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Their new enterprise also gave them a constructive\, creative\, life-affirming way to work through their feelings of sadness about the storm and its\nimpact on their Glen Arbor home. \n“A Sign of the Times” is offered in conjunction with the GAAC exhibition “New Views: Home/Place\,” a deep look into home and place identity. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. \nGathering Light is a collection of 20 essays written in the last decade\, and in Stocking’s signature\, conversational voice. She focuses on unexpected people and understated places that define Leelanau County. Stocking moved to Glen Arbor in 1952\, at the age of 7 with her family\, and claimed Leelanau County as her home base until 2017. \nStocking’s first book of essays\, Letters from the Leelanau\, was published in 1990\, and became an instant best seller. Like Letters\, Gathering Light showcases Stocking’s interest in off-the-beaten-path people and places that illuminate Leelanau’s history\, and its physical and spiritual character. DESCRIPTION:The Glen Arbor Arts Center is hosting a yarn bomb Maker Day on Sunday\, May 19\, 1 – 3 pm at the GAAC\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. This is one of several Makers Days leading up to a September 15 yarn bombing/installation at the GAAC. \nYarn bomb-making is a no-fail\, friendly community event for people of any needle skill. It’s a form of temporary street art where yarn in any form (knit\, crochet\, latch hook\, cross stitch\, amigurumi or simple wrapping) adorns an object [e.g. tree trunk or limbs\, poles\, waste can] in the public environment. Maker Days are a time to knit + crochet “bombs” with other needle crafters. Please bring: your needles\, craft yarn\, old wool sweaters and scarves that no one wears\, yarn sewing needles. Don’t knit or crochet? We’ll have old sweaters that can be turned into “bombs.” This yarn bombing is part of our upcoming exhibition “Fiber Without Borders” September 13 – November 7. \nWe need donations of craft yarn\, large size knitting needles\, and old wool sweaters for this project are welcomed. DESCRIPTION:Susan Wink\, a Big Rapids resident\, shares stories from her 2019 artist’s residency with the Glen Arbor\nArts Center on Friday\, May 17\, noon at the GAAC\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. \nEach of the GAAC’s artists-in-residence gives a conversational overview of the residency. These\npresentations offer a chance to hear about the resident’s project\, and the process they experienced\nduring their two-week stay. Wink’s residency focuses on a mixed media project called “Grace + Despair.” \nShe will be using found materials organic materials including driftwood and other beach debris; and\nworking in clay to create sculptural forms. \nThe GAAC artist-in-residence presentation are free and open to the public. The result is a visual record of “The Cats on the Prowl: A Superior Adventure.” An exhibition of paintings generated by that trip are on display at the Glen Arbor Arts Center May 10 – 26.  \nThe Cats — Leelanau painters Jane Ditri\, Mary Fuscaldo\, Candace Petersen\, Sue Quinlan\, and Barbara Reich — traveled to Wawa\, Ontario three years ago to paint some of the same iconic landscapes made famous by the Group of Seven. The seven men\, sometimes known as the Algonquin School\, painted the rugged Canadian wilderness from 1920 to 1933\, exploring through their painting the unique character of the Canadian landscape. During the course of the six day trip\, the Leelanau painters traveled Lake Superior’s eastern shore\, and revisited many of the sites made famous by the Group of Seven. \nA conversation with The Cats about their adventure takes place Thursday\, May 16\, 11am. GAAC Gallery Manager Sarah Bearup-Neal talks to members of this quintet to go deeper into the trip about the reasons for the trip and what was learned during their Superior Adventure. SUMMARY:After the storm: How are the Woods doing?
DESCRIPTION:Nearly four years after an historic wind storm devastated great swaths of Leelanau County woodlands\, the Glen Arbor Arts Center takes a look at how the woods are doing these days with Julia Gehring\, a biologist with the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore\, on Thursday\, March 28\, 10:30 am at the GAAC\, 6031 S. Lake Street\, Glen Arbor. \nThe program is offered as part of the GAAC’s “Wood\, Woods\, Wooden” exhibition\, and is free to attend. \nIn August 2015\, a straight-line storm with winds clocked at up to 100 mph swept through Glen Arbor and other parts of Leelanau and Grand Traverse counties. In minutes\, the storm destroyed homes\, and flattened acres of mature trees in the Sleeping Bear Dunes. This remarkable event set in motion a variety of natural processes that are inherently dynamic\, but happen slowly and are sometimes missed. \nIn this conversational program\, Gehring will talk with GAAC Gallery Manager Sarah Bearup-Neal about the process of regeneration and recovery in the woods. What has changed? How have the native residents – birds\, mammals\, insects and other biota – fared and adapted to the changes in their habitats? And how does the SBDNL assess the potential for forest fire with so much downed wood? \nThe GAAC exhibition “Wood\, Woods\, Wooden” is a juried show of 2D and 3D work by 29 visual artists from throughout Northern Michigan and the state. The exhibition runs March 8 – April 11. The GAAC is open Monday-Friday from 9 am – 3 pm; and noon – 4 pm on Sunday.

DESCRIPTION:Parents and Caregivers are invited to “Little Artists\,” a program designed towards pre-school age children and includes interactive\, process-based projects that nurture natural creativity. Each session is hosted at the Glen Arbor Arts Center and includes a story\, snack\, multiple stations to explore and features a unique interactive\, hands-on project. Instructor Michelle Aucello guides parents and children to work together to to create an amazing seasonally inspired or holiday themed project to take-home each session.  Each class is 90 minutes on select Friday mornings\, which also includes a small snack. \n“Little Artists” is a drop-in program is $15 per child/adult\, and $5 for any additional children. Non-participating infants less than 1 year are welcome at no charge. For additional information\, please call the GAAC at 231/334-6112 \n\nMichelle Aucello is an educator with 26 years of experience. Michelle taught first and second grade in Honolulu\, Hawaii for 13 years as well as classes on Early Literacy at the University of Hawaii. Michele also worked with Honolulu Family Magazine as a contributor\, blogging about food and crafts and providing educational tips for parents. In 2017 Michelle successfully developed a new program for the GAAC called Little Artists which explores creative projects for preschool children and their parents/caregivers. \n

SUMMARY:“Talk About Art” What is an artist’s residency?
DESCRIPTION:The GAAC AIR Collection exhibition also includes two related programs: Friday\, November 9: Glen Arbor painter Harvey Gordon\, a past chairperson of the AIR\nCommittee\, offers “A Radical Perspective of Art\,” a Brown Bag art history presentation at 12 noon. This event is free and open to the public. \nSunday\, November 11: What is an artist’s residency? A panel of working artists who have all enjoyed artists’  residencies — Margo Burian\, Lori Feldpausch and Joan Richmond — talk about how an artist’s residency figures into a studio practice. Presented as part of the “Talk About Art” series. 2 pm in the GAAC gallery. No charge. \nThe Glen Arbor Arts Center spotlights its permanent collection of works by more than 40 artists who have enjoyed a two-week residency in the GAAC’s Artist-in-Residence [AIR] program. The exhibition runs November 9 – December 21 at the GAAC\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. \nArtists who enjoy a residency in the AIR program often make a gift of work to the GAAC at the end of their stay. It is a practice that was initiated more than a decade ago\, and has allowed the GAAC to build a permanent collection and a record of AIRs’ work. This program of artists’ residencies began in the 1990s at the initiation of the late Suzanne Wilson\, one of the GAAC’s\nfounders. Wilson handpicked visual artists for the program\, and found area friends to house them. Today\, a committee of seven volunteers administer the program. The GAAC offers seven residencies each year from May to October. A selection of work by Suzanne Wilson will also be part of this exhibition. \nFor more information about these activities\, go to GlenArborArt and click on EVENTS. In November and December\, the GAAC is open Monday through Friday 9 am – 3:30 pm\, and noon\n– 4 pm on Sundays.
