SUMMARY:Video Lecture: Creative Resistance – Political Art + Craftivism
DESCRIPTION:Video Lecture: Creative Resistance – Political Art + Craftivism\nViewable on-line September 20 – November 7\, 2020 \nPolitics – past and present – provide ample fodder for creative inspiration.  Sarah Bearup-Neal\, Glen Arbor Arts Center gallery manager\, surveys some of these powerful examples during a slide lecture. Tickets for this on-line program are $10 GAAC members\, $15 nonmembers. Registered viewers will receive by email an access code that will allow them to watch this video presentation anytime from September 20 – November 7\, 2020. Read more and register here: https://glenarborart.org/events/lecture-creative-resistance/. \nFrom Theodore Gericault’s 19th century painting\, the Raft of the Medusa\, to the thousands of pink\, hand-knit caps worn during the historic 2017 Women’s March in Washington\, DC\, the visual arts show themselves to be expressive tools. Craftivism is a creative movement that began to take shape in the early 2000s. It sought to combine visual art with activism\, and turned to the so-called “domestic arts” of embroidery\, knitting and hand stitching to comment on a wide range of current\, topical issues – from feminism to sexism to environmental concerns. \nNOTE: Some material contained in this presentation is sexually suggestive\, and would be considered “adult.” It may not be appropriate for younger viewers. \n“Political Art + Craftivism” is offered in conjunction with the GAAC’s exhibition Power Tools [September 11 – November 5]. In addition to her duties at the GAAC\, Bearup-Neal is a practicing fiber artist. She received a BFA from Michigan State University.

SUMMARY:OUTDOOR GALLERY DEDICATION
DESCRIPTION:A public celebration and dedication of the Glen Arbor Arts Center’s new Outdoor Gallery are July 30\, 5:30 – 8 pm. The GAAC unveiled its new Outdoor Gallery on May 12. The inaugural exhibition features work by Empire painter Mark Mehaffey. Five of Mark’s acrylic paintings were reproduced on 5ft X 5ft aluminum panels and installed on the GAAC’s west and south exterior walls. \nPreceding the 7 pm start of the dedication ceremony\, Mehaffey will create and complete an original painting of the natural area surrounding the GAAC. He will begin painting at 5:30 pm. The framed painting will be available for purchase during the dedication. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the GAAC’s 2021 Outdoor Gallery project. \nThe GAAC’s Outdoor Gallery was two years in the planning. A committee explored the idea of placing on the walls sculptures\, tiles\, murals\, and other media while searching for the most flexible and cost-effective answer. The weatherproof\, aluminum panels on display were created by Image 360 in Traverse City. \nFollowing a months-long\, call-for-entries search\, Mehaffey’s series of contemporary landscape paintings were selected by Glen Arbor juror-artists Hank Feeley and Emory Mead. Mehaffey maintains an active studio practice. He retired from the Lansing Public School system where he taught visual art from 1973 to 2002. He teaches painting both locally and throughout the United States. Mehaffey’s work remains in place until April 2021. The panels will then be available for purchase. Support for the Outdoor Gallery comes through a generous grant from GAAC members Barb and George Cochran. \nThe GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St.\, in Glen Arbor. SUMMARY:Fiber: Visual Art Survey Program
DESCRIPTION:The Glen Arbor Arts Center takes a short look back\, and a long look forward\, at contemporary fiber and textile arts on Sunday\, October 6\, 2 pm. This visual survey is part of the GAAC’s exhibition Fiber Without Borders\, and is presented without charge. Sarah Bearup-Neal\, GAAC gallery manager and studio fiber artist\, will facilitate the program. \nIn the late 1960s the Museum of Modern Art broke new ground with Wall Hangings\, the first major museum exhibition focused on the work of 28 artist working in fiber and textile materials. In the subsequent decades\, the fiber arts have taken a great leap forward to become one of the most expressive\, versatile media in the contemporary art world. No longer viewed in purely functional and domestic terms\, the fiber arts have continued to push definitions\, materials and techniques in the last 60 years. \nThe medium easily crosses old boundaries – moving from the home front to comment and reflect on social changes\, politics\, feminist issues\, as well as the dividing line between art and craft. Fiber Without Borders continues through November 7. The GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. For more information\, go to GlenArborArt.org

SUMMARY:Yarn Bomb Installation Day
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, September 15 | 9:30 am \nYarn bombs are set to drop on the Glen Arbor Arts Center on Sunday\, September 15\, 9:30 am. Volunteers are needed to help install hand-knit “bombs” on trees in the GAAC’s backyard grove as part of the upcoming exhibition “Fiber Without Borders\,” a juried exhibition of contemporary fiber art. Yarn bombing is friendly community event\, and a form of temporary street art. Yarn in any form (knit\, crochet\, latch hook\, cross stitch\, amigurumi or simple wrapping) adorns an object [e.g. tree trunk or limbs\, poles\, waste can] in the public environment. While other forms of graffiti may be decorative\, socio-political commentary\, or vandalism\, yarn bombing was initially almost exclusively about reclaiming and personalizing sterile or cold public places. The start of this movement has been attributed to Houston resident Magda Sayeg\, who says she first got the idea in 2005 when she covered the door handle of her boutique with a custom-made cozy. \nVolunteers of any age are invited to help with the yarn bomb installation. To volunteer\, call the GAAC\, 231/334-6112. “Fiber Without Borders” runs September 13 – November 7. For more information go to\nGlenArborArt.org. The GAAC is located at 6031 S. SUMMARY:Artist in Resident talk: Patricia Schaefer
DESCRIPTION:Painter Patricia Schaefer will discuss a new series of paintings that explore the human body and bodies of water she plans to create as part of her 2019 artist’s residency with the Glen Arbor Arts Center. The presentation is August 30\, noon at the GAAC\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. \nEach of the GAAC’s artists-in-residence gives a conversational overview of their residency. SUMMARY:Gallery Talk: Scott Mills "Mapping Home"
DESCRIPTION:Scott Mills moved back to his childhood home of Maple City in 2014 after spending 10 years away. He quickly realized he needed to get reacquainted with his home turf. Mills talks about the tracking and mapping project he created to do just that on July 28\, 2 pm at the Glen Arbor Arts Center\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. This program is open to the public at no charge. \nIn order to reorient himself to the land and get reacquainted with the peninsula that called him back home from the Pacific Northwest\, Mills began walking the unmarked trails and remnant roads that thread through the forests and over the dunes nearby. These “old ways” and their histories so captivated him that he began to plot their routes on a map and describe his passages in writing. Repeated walks in all seasons exposed new dimensions to these old ways\, as well as older ways extending back to the Pleistocene. Mills continues to discover\, follow and map these ways\, and he is currently at work on a body of prose and poetry describing his ongoing passages. \n“Mapping Home” is offered in conjunction with the GAAC exhibition “New Views: Home/Place\,” in the GAAC gallery from June 7 – August 8. SUMMARY:Gallery Talk: Historic Cottages of Glen Lake
DESCRIPTION:More than 20 years ago Barbara Siepker\, a Glen Arbor book publisher with a keen interest in local history\, began a project to memorialize the heyday of summer resort and cottage life in the Glen Lake area. The result is the book Historic Cottages of Glen Lake. Siepker is joined by Traverse City architectural photographer Dietrich Floeter\, her collaborator\, to discuss the project on July 7\, 2 pm at the Glen Arbor Arts Center\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. This program is open to the public without charge. \nHistoric Cottages of Glen Lake\, first published in 2008\, is visually stunning coffee table book with images of 50 summer cottages. Siepker’s desire to commemorate these iconic dwellings was prompted by concern – as more cottages were torn down and replaced by modern lakefront structures\, Siepker feared the loss of important local history. Siepker and Floeter worked together to capture these old cottages’ visual memory\, and their contribution to the character of the locality. \nThis program is offered in conjunction with the GAAC exhibition “New Views: Home/Place\,” an exploration of home and place identity. It can be viewed in the GAAC gallery from June 7 – August 8. For more information go to GlenArborArt.org
