SUMMARY:Center Gallery: Color Stories
DESCRIPTION:Center Gallery opens its 2016 season May 27 with a month-long exhibition of hand-formed porcelain clay tableware by Darcy Bowden and textile constructions by Sarah Bearup-Neal. An artists’ reception is May 27\, 6-8 p.m. at the gallery\, 6023 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. \n  \nBowden’s plates\, bowls and other table objects make the service of food an artful act. They’re simple\, modern and embellished with familiar shapes in happy\, lively colors. Bowden hand forms her objects using an anvil and paddle. A resident of Ypsilanti\, Bowden taught art for 30 years\, retiring from the Ann Arbor Public Schools in 2008. \n  \nBearup-Neal’s banners and small fabric constructions strike a modern temperament. The Empire artist’s work references many familiar quiltmaking themes and techniques\, then translates these time-honored characteristics into contemporary compositions that showcase stitchery\, mark-making\, hand-painted and hand-printed materials\, graphic line and shape\, storytelling and strong color play. \n  \nThis exhibition runs through June 30. For more information\, please call 231/334-3179.

SUMMARY:Land and Water: New Paintings by Margo Burian
DESCRIPTION:Paintings of Leelanau County’s land and water – as processed through the imagination of Grand Rapids artist Margo Burian – are on display next at Center Gallery\, 6023 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. A public reception opens the show July 24\, 6 p.m. \n  \nBurian’s lush\, atmospheric oil paintings of the region are not\, she says\, a strict record of natural features and landmarks. “I have taken liberties with place and nature to move the painting from an accounting or laundry list to an interpretation\,” Burian said. Water – and its “ability to change at a moment’s notice” – plays an important role in her painting\, which begin as field sketches\, then developed in her studio. \n  \nThis show continues through July 30. For more information\, please call 231/334-3179. \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Shakespeare at Studio Stage
DESCRIPTION:Riverside Shakespeare performs “Measure for Measure” July 15\, 7 p.m. at Studio Stage\, 6023 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. Studio Stage is located behind Center Gallery at Lake Street Studios. There is no charge\, but donations are welcome. \n“Measure for Measure” is a timeless tale about the struggle to discern appearance from reality. The Traverse City-based theater troupe takes the play out of Vienna and resets the story in ancient India\, bringing with them the colors and costumes of that Asian country. The play’s main themes include justice\, mercy and the dichotomy between corruption and purity. Or\, as The Bard wrote: ” … (S)ome rise by sin\, and some by virtue fall.” For more information please call 231/334-3179.
