SUMMARY:Margo Burian artist reception & exhibition
DESCRIPTION:For her 11th consecutive solo show at Center Gallery in Glen Arbor\, Maple City painter Margo Burian breaks with her tradition of landscape painting\, and for the first time shows a group of mixed media abstracted paintings on panel. This exhibition of new works opens Friday\, July 6 with a 6 p.m. reception. \nBurian has traditionally worked in oil paint. In these new works\, she explores water- based media including acrylic paint\, graphite\, collage\, and image transfer. “The paintings are deeply layered and consist of multiple sessions in the studio\,” she said. “They’re derived from a combination of observation\, memory\, sketch\, and photo reference. Often times the original image becomes lost in the layering process until it becomes a separate image onto itself.” \nCenter Gallery’s show of work by Margo Burian continues through July 12. \nCenter Gallery is open daily 11 am – 5 pm. For more information go to www.lakestreetstudiosglenarbor.com\, or call 231-334-3179

SUMMARY:Center Gallery | Exhibition and Sundown Reception
DESCRIPTION:Painter Robert Ross likes “to paint ordinary\, often overlooked scenes and subjects.” Ross takes viewers on a tour of these places and things in an exhibition of new work at\nCenter Gallery\, 6023 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. \nThe show opens Friday\, June 29 with a 6pm – sundown reception\, and continues through Thursday\, July 5. \nBorn and raised in Michigan\, Ross now lives in Florida and makes annual visits to northern Michigan to renew his relationship with the local landscape. “My theme is the ongoing visual conversation between the abandoned farm buildings and surrounding fields\, hills\, trees and sky in the Port Oneida district of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore\,” he said. “The classic shapes of these sentinels from the past are altered subtly by changing light and weather\, giving them a sense of mystery and movement.” Ross works in oil paint\, and combines plein air studies with studio work. \nFor more information and Spring gallery hours go to www.lakestreetstudiosglenarbor.com\, or call 231-334-3179

SUMMARY:Center Gallery Artist Reception: Barbara Cochran and Margie Guyot
DESCRIPTION:Center Gallery hosts an artists’ reception to open its first exhibition of the 2018 season on Friday\, May 25\, 6-8 p.m. at the gallery: 6023 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. A celebration of the region’s rural life — as seen by painters Barbara Cochran and Margie Guyot — launches Center Gallery’s 2018 season. \nCochran lives on a Leelanau County cider apple farm. Her oil paintings reflect the view outside her studio window\, and celebrate the pastoral beauty of her home county. Although the region is best known for its beaches and lakes\, Cochran chooses to zero in on farmstead life — from its fruits and vegetables to its farmyard creatures. \nGuyot is well known for her atmospheric depictions of farms and fields found along the iconic backroads in Antrim Country\, her home base. She also works in oil\, and paints en plein air\, a technique that challenges the painter to record scenes quickly and on the spot. Center Gallery’s opening exhibition continues through June 28. SUMMARY:Center Gallery: Rock\, Scissors\, Paper
DESCRIPTION:“Rock\, Scissors\, Paper” brings the work of three visual artist working in narrative forms to Center Gallery\, 6023 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor\, from Sept. 15 – October 8. A reception to open the exhibition is Friday\, Sept. 15\, 6 – 8 p.m. \nVisual art is a powerful tool for telling stories\, and each of the exhibitors in “Rock\, Scissors\, Paper” offer little tales about the things and events that inspire her artmaking. Julie Kradel\, a ceramic sculptor from Cedar\, creates four-legged beings — fox\, mice\, sheep\, bears — that spring from the fables\, nursery rhymes and music Kradel enjoys. Glen Arbor artist Beth Bricker mines her trove of fairy tales\, rhymes and childhood memories to create intricate paper cuttings — some mounted\, others collaged onto paintings — to tell her personal stories anew. Working in the media of the contemporary quilt and mixed media collage\, Sarah Bearup-Neal\, a Benzie resident\, focuses on themes of tourism\, local agriculture and rural\, northern Michigan life. \nCenter Gallery is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information\, call the gallery at 231/334-3179.

SUMMARY:Center Gallery Celebrates A Decade of Margo Burian
DESCRIPTION:Paintings of Leelanau County’s land and water – as processed through the imagination of Grand Rapids artist Margo Burian – are on display July 21-27 at Center Gallery\, 6023 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. A public reception opens this 10th anniversary show on July 21\, 6 p.m. \n2017 marks the 10th consecutive\, Center Gallery exhibition of Burian’s lush\, atmospheric oil paintings of the region. The painter’s work is an interpretation of experience and memory\, rather than a strict record of natural features and landmarks. She takes liberties with place and nature to move the painting from an accounting to an interpretation. After the initial on-site point of contact with her subject\, she then returns to the studio to distill and develop the field notes into works that distinctly speaks to her love of the natural world. \nThis exhibition continues through July 27. For more information please call 231/334-3179. Center Gallery is open daily 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

The Cedar resident uses a variety of materials in his weaving\, including rattan\, palm\, birch bark and red osier. \n  \nBrown began interpreting maps of local waterways and landforms in 2012. After enlarging the maps\, Brown translates them into woven tapestries and sewn constructions that use both new and recycled fiber materials.
