SUMMARY:Port Oneida Rural and Cultural Fair
DESCRIPTION:NOTICE: The historic Port Oneida Fair event is cancelled due to the storm.  Also the Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear​ Chicken BBQ. Any tickets that were purchased for the BBQ can be refunded by bringing your tickets to the Olsen Farm/PHSB office at 3164 W. Harbor Hwy in Port Oneida. \n Friday and Saturday\,  August 7-8\, 2015\n \n 10:00 am – 4:00  \nEvery August\, the Port Oneida Rural Historic District awakens from its peaceful slumber and comes alive with activity true to the period when it was a community of robust settlers. \nVisitors take a  step back in time at the two-day Port Oneida Fair to experience life as it was in the late 1800s and early 1900s. \nTake the trolley\, hike\, bike or drive (if you must!) to the select historic sites where a variety of traditional rural crafts and activities take place.  Over 100 demonstrators will be hard at work. \nChildren can try their hand at crosscut sawing and other farm implements. Oxen cut hay in the fields while artists create paintings inspired by the cultural landscape. Take in a display of antique bicycles\, cameras and phonographs. Learn about basket weaving\, soapmaking\, buttermaking\, candle dipping\, spinning\, and fur trapping. Satisfy your curiosity and walk through many of the historic farmhouses and barns that will be open for tours. \nPack a picnic lunch to eat at under a tree\, or purchase food at various sites.  This is an enjoyable and relaxing\, yet educational family time.  The event is hosted by Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. \nFor more information\, call the Park at 326-5135 or get full Fair schedule here.

Take some time to visit and explore areas of our beloved Sleeping Bear Dunes this week! \nNational Park Pass Required\, but NPS is waiving entrance fees for April 18th & 19th.\nTo kick off the week\, join Park Rangers and the Grand Traverse Astronomical Society for a guided exploration of our night sky on Saturday\, April 18 from 9:00 – 11:00 PM at Platte River Point. Dress for the weather and bring a flashlight! \nDuring the week\, join the “Find Your Park Scavenger Hunt“\, which can be downloaded from www.nps.gov/slbe or pick up a copy at the Philip A. Hart Visitor Center. Then share your experiences on social media using #findyourpark. Also\, check out the National Lakeshore’s Facebook Page and the Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes Facebook page. Or follow the Rangers on Twitter at www.twitter.com/sleepingbearnps for special daily “Find Your Park” posts at 4:00 PM each day. \nOn April 25\, Junior Rangers (young and young-at-heart) are invited to spend either the morning or afternoon participating in Junior Ranger Day. Children can earn an official Junior Ranger Day badge. Meet Park Rangers at the DH Day Log Cabin to design your own arrowhead\, paint on the beach\, learn basic knot-typing techniques\, and other fun activities from 10:00 – 11:30 AM or 1:00 – 2:30 PM. Please park in Glen Haven and walk the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail to the log cabin in the DH Day campground. \n\nYou can get a park pass for the week or for the year\, at Crystal River Outfitters Recreational District located in downtown Glen Arbor\, or at the Visitor’s Center in Empire\, MI

SUMMARY:Ranger-led Snowshoe Hikes at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore
DESCRIPTION:Come explore Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (National Lakeshore) on snowshoes this winter! Join park rangers for a guided snowshoe hike this holiday season and every Saturday throughout the winter. The first hike of the season will be on Saturday\, December 27\, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. The snowshoe hikes will continue to be offered every Saturday at 1:00 p.m. through March 7\, 2015. Meet at the National Lakeshore’s Philip A. Hart Visitor Center in Empire. If you don’t have your own snowshoes\, a pair will be loaned at no charge. Participants need only purchase the park entrance pass or have an annual pass to join in the fun. \nReservations are required whether you need to borrow snowshoes or have your own.  Ranger-led snowshoe hikes are limited to 30 participants.
