SUMMARY:The 3 Sisters: Indigenous Agriculture
DESCRIPTION:William Derouin & Tera John of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians will discuss Indigenous agricultural practices. Tera is an active Tribe member who practices native food traditions and works at the Tribe’s “Gitigaan” or garden. She’ll discuss the importance of the Three Sisters – corn\, beans & squash – and how they relate to Native beliefs\, women and family relationships. William will speak about the current Agriculture & Food Sovereignty work at the tribal headquarters at Peshawbestown. He’ll also announce the GT Band’s recent industrial production of a garden soil amendment from fish waste called “Gigook Gitigaan “ or fish garden. Presented in partnership with the Leelanau County Historic Preservation Society.

DESCRIPTION:Friday\, November 1 st\, 1 pm\, Traverse City Library\, McGuire Room\, 610 Woodmere Avenue\, Traverse City\, MI \nHistoric Property Owners Opportunity to Apply for Michigan Historic Marker Designation: When visitors\, community members and groups visit a historic place they can connect to their heritage which provides a sense of belonging and being a part of a culturally rich network. A meeting is being held to reach out\, connect\, encourage and support interested private owners and groups to work on getting their significant historic sites recognized and appreciated for their stories and contributions to local history in the five-county Traverse City area. \nA presentation on the eligibility and process of applying for a Michigan Historic Marker is being offered by Heather Lehman\, Graduate Assistant at the Michigan History Center\, who is responsible for the administration of these beautiful metal markers. This free public meeting is provided for private and public owners of Michigan historic structures\, sites and places who are interested in finding out how to apply for and achieve a historic designation. Meeting will be held Friday\, November 1 st at 1 pm\, at Traverse City Area Public Library\, McGuire Room\, 610 Woodmere Ave.\, Traverse City. \nThis program is being co-sponsored by the Leelanau County Historic Preservation Society\, Leelanau Historical Society and Benzie Area Historical Society to inform and assist. Structures\, places and sites that are eligible for a Michigan Historic Marker receive this metal historical marker describing its history and contribution to the local area and to Michigan as a whole. SUMMARY:Annual Plow Day: Poor Farm Barn
DESCRIPTION:A Plow Day groundbreaking ceremony and celebration of National Historic Preservation Month will take place at the Leelanau County Poor Farm Barn in Myles Kimmerly Park near Maple City event rescheduled for Sunday\, May 26th from 1-3pm. \nParticipate in the historical reenactment of draft horses plowing the second Buckets of Rain garden at the Poor Farm. There will be a harness demonstration narrated by Tom Cyr of Black Horse Farm. Susan Zenker of Fantail Farms\, and Kathy Shutt of Big Butt Farms\, both from Benzonia\, provide the teams of horses and do the plowing and disking of the 5\,000 square-foot garden. A horse-driven wagon ride will also take place. \nChris Skellenger\, director of Buckets of Rain\, a nonprofit dedicated to “growing hope and feeding lives\, one garden at a time\,” will speak on the success of last year’s first garden. Steve Stier\, president of the Leelanau County Historic Preservation Society\, will update the recent barn rehabilitation.  \nTom Ulrich\, deputy superintendent\, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore\, will share the importance of historic preservation in Leelanau County. \nBarbara Siepker will introduce the inaugural book signing of Historic Leelanau: Recognized Places and Sites of Historical Significancewith authors Chris Byron and Tom Wilson.  \nLast year’s plowing event was a success and a celebration of the Save the Poor Farm Barn group who received a 25-year lease from the county. Under the auspices of Leelanau County Historic Preservation Society\, the group has completed the cement pouring of the east wall\, the first step in rehabilitating the barn to its original stature and to provide public education and service to the Leelanau community. Volunteers are being sought to assist in planting and maintaining the Buckets of Rain garden. Garden produce will be distributed to the needy. \nThis two-hour event is free and open to the public. Bring children to pet the horses and have a ride in the horse-d­riven wagon; bring a lawn chair and sign up on their follower’s list; volunteer; and make a $20 donation to receive a gift book.

Newman Rd.\, Maple City  \nSaturday\, July 28th\, 10 – noon \n\nLooking for any memorabilia about the Leelanau County Poor Farm\, located west of Maple City on Burdickville Road\, across from Myles Kimmerly Park. Between 1900 and 1960\, this working farm housed up to 20 residents at a time who helped to operate the farm. In addition\, the farm had a managing family living there and some hired help. This farm was referred to as the County Farm by the community. \nThis is valuable local history in the process of being preserving. We are looking for any stories\, photos or items from this farm which was referred to as the County Farm by the community. You are our link to documenting this important history. If you have stories and would consider sharing we would like you to join us at Kasson Township Hall for our first Discovery Day. With your permission we would like to scan and document these photos\, take notes and/or audio record your recollections.
