SUMMARY:COFFEE WITH THE AUTHORS - Holly Wren Spaulding
DESCRIPTION:Coffee With The Authors is a live\, conversational interview with local and regional authors about the writing craft and process. This Glen Arbor Arts Center series continues July 29\, 11 am with poet Holly Wren Spaulding in a conversation about keeping and banning words. Sarah Bearup-Neal\, GAAC gallery manager\, leads the discussion. \nSpaulding\, a Northern Michigan native now living in Southern Maine\, published her third book of poems\, Familiars\, in 2020. It was a response to the 2015 deletion of words by the Oxford Junior Dictionary. The OJD’s deleted-words list included names of flora and fauna\, in order to make room for newer words from the world of technology\, such as “chatroom” and “bullet point.” Familiars is full of poems about “trees\, flowers\, magic\, touch\, memory\, erasure\, power\, and [Spaulding’s] grief over the changing climate.” Spaulding’s work is a reflection of her long\, close association with the natural world. In her July 29 conversation\, Spaulding will talk about the power of words\, choosing them with care\, and the ways in which she works to keep language vital through her writing. \nCoffee With The Authors is offered without charge. The GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor.

SUMMARY:Creativity Q+A LIVE with Blacksmith Scott Lankton
DESCRIPTION:How do artists think\, work\, and practice? Those questions are explored during Creativity Q+A LIVE\, a series of conversations with Northern Michigan artists at the Glen Arbor Arts Center. On May 14\, 1 pm Leelanau County artist Scott Lankton talks about his practice with Sarah Bearup-Neal\, GAAC gallery manager. The program is free. No reservations are required. Doors open at noon. \nBlacksmith Scott Lankton was “hooked on hot steel” the first time he worked with it. He went on to find a vocation in the forge\, pounding metal into domestic objects of great beauty. Lankton also found that this old art + craft form can be put to use in the pursuit of peace\, and be a way of raising awareness about gun violence — as he raises the profile of his calling – blacksmithing — and how it is more than an historical craft form demonstrated in museum settings. \nCreativity Q+A LIVE is an offshoot of the GAAC’s online feature\, Creativity Q+A. Since 2020\, the GAAC has published monthly\, long-form interviews that dig into artists’ creative practices. Lankton’s conversation was published in October 2022. To read it\, and all the Creativity Q+A interviews\, go to GlenArborArt.org / ARTISTS. The GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor.

SUMMARY:Outdoor Gallery Panel Auction
DESCRIPTION:All five panels from the Glen Arbor Arts Center’s 2022 Outdoor Gallery exhibition will be available for acquisition. The GAAC is holding an online auction April 25 – 27. The 5-foot square artworks are reproductions of original\, acrylic paintings by Carrie Hensel\, the Ann Arbor\, Michigan\, winner of the 2022 Outdoor Gallery competition. \nOnline bidding begins April 25\, 9 am\, and concludes on April 27\, 2 pm. Opening bids start at $600/panel minimum on these four panels: Revisit The Pines\, Birches In October\, Wintry Woods\, and Twilight On Bear Lake. Note: The opening bid for the Morning Sun On Trilliums panel begins at $500. In Summer 2022 there was an unsuccessful attempt to steal this panel\, which resulted in some surface damage: several linear scratches\, and two “dents” along the top edge of the panel. Bidding instructions and images of the panels may be found here: https://glenarborart.org/2023-outdoor-gallery-panel-auction/. \nThe panels are lightweight aluminum finished with a weather-resistant coating. They now hang on the GAAC’s exterior walls\, and may be viewed at any time. Read more about Carrie Hensel and see images of the 2023-23 panels here: https://glenarborart.org/events/outdoor-gallery-exhibit-carrie-hensel/. Proceeds from the auction benefit the GAAC’s Outdoor Gallery project.

SUMMARY:Creativity Q+A LIVE with Artist Angela Saxon
DESCRIPTION:How do artists think\, work\, and practice? Those questions are explored during Creativity Q+A LIVE\, a series of conversations with Northern Michigan artists at the Glen Arbor Arts Center. On April 23\, 1 pm Leelanau County artist Angela Saxon talks about her practice with Sarah Bearup-Neal\, GAAC gallery manager. The program is free. No reservations are required. Doors open at noon. \nSaxon is a self-described “mark maker.” That’s her calling\, and the basis of her creative practice\, which is about seeing more\, getting beyond the surface of things\, and depicting layers of time in her paintings\, prints and drawings. The materials she uses don’t define her. She moves fluidly between them\, looking for the best combination of tools and processes to interpret the local landscape’s ephemeral essence. \nCreativity Q+A LIVE is an offshoot of the GAAC’s online feature\, Creativity Q+A. Since 2020\, the GAAC has published monthly\, long-form interviews that dig into artists’ creative practices. Saxon’s conversation was published in March 2021. To read it\, and all the Creativity Q+A interviews\, go to GlenArborArt.org / ARTISTS. The GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor.

SUMMARY:Creativity Q+A LIVE with Mark Mehaffey
DESCRIPTION:How do artists think\, work\, and practice? Those questions are explored during Creativity Q+A LIVE\, a series of conversations with Northern Michigan artists at the Glen Arbor Arts Center. The first\, 2023 conversation is February 25\, 11 am with Leelanau County resident Mark Mehaffey. The program is free. No reservations are required. Doors open at 10:30 am. \nMehaffey is an artist whose creative work refuses to be shoehorned into tidy boxes. He moves fluidly between representing the visible world\, and working with not-so-representational subjects: marks\, lines\, scratches\, color stories. His practice is less focused on “subjects” than it is on ideas\, and “what-if?”. Working primarily in water-based media\, Mehaffey paints\, draws\, collages\, and taught art in the public school for 30 years. \nCreativity Q+A LIVE is an offshoot of the GAAC’s online feature\, Creativity Q+A. DESCRIPTION:The Glen Arbor Arts Center hosts Leelanau County writers Jacob Wheeler and Anne-Marie Oomen for coffee and conversation about their newly published nonfiction books. The Coffee With The Authors book discussion is November 26\, 11 am at the GAAC\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. Both writers have won recognition for their writing\, but their writing springs from different sources: Anne-Marie’s from personal history; Jacob’s from deeply researched journalism. Both writers will talk about the process of making\, and publishing their books. \nIn his second book\, Angel of the Garbage Dump\, Jacob Wheeler executes an in-depth\, feeling portrait of Maine native\, the late Hanley Denning\, who saw poverty and desperation in its ugliest form\, and refused to turn a blind eye. A former track star at Bowdoin College\, Denning was struck by what she saw at a city dump in Guatemala: garbage pickers competing with vultures for the food dumped by trucks\, toddlers playing amidst rats. Wheeler details Denning’s efforts to create Safe Passage\, a nonprofit organization focused on bringing significant and lasting change to the garbage pickers and their children. Wheeler is editor and publisher of the Glen Arbor Sun\, which he founded in 1996; adjunct faculty with Northwestern Michigan College; and adviser to the staff of NMC’s White Pine Press. \nAs Long As I Know You narrates Anne-Marie Oomen’s journey to finally knowing her mother – as her mother’s memories are being erased by dementia. It explores how humor and compassion grow belatedly between a mother and daughter who don’t much like each other. It’s a personal map to find a mother who may have been there all along\, then losing her again in the time of Covid. As Long As I Know You is the recipient of the Sue William Silverman Prize for Creative Nonfiction. Oomen is the author of six books of prose and poetry\, and seven plays. \nCoffee With The Authors is free. For more information\, go to GlenArborArt.org\, or call 231/334-6112.
