SUMMARY:Walk + Talk The Exhibits
DESCRIPTION:A guided walk-and-talk through the Glen Arbor Arts Center’s new exhibit\, Happy\, takes place January 27\, 1 pm. Sarah Bearup-Neal\, GAAC gallery manager\, leads a conversational tour of the exhibit. Happy explores how 26 visual artists interpret the many facets and meanings of happiness: literal to metaphorical\, in 2D + 3D. \nThe Walk + Talk will also include conversation about Tree Of Life | Connecting The World\, a mixed media installation by Traverse City artist Mary Fortuna. This small show runs January 5 – April 25\, 2024 in the GAAC Lobby Gallery. \nNo one walks into a gallery and fully understands what the exhibiting artists intended to say with their work. During this one-hour program\, Bearup-Neal will talk about both exhibits’ themes; shed light on artists’ statements; and explore how artists use materials to communicate meaning; or make an idea more dynamic. Visitors will leave with a fuller understanding\, and appreciation of the exhibit. \nThe Walk + Talk is free. The GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. For more information go to GlenArborArt.org / EVENTS.

SUMMARY:Creativity Q+A LIVE with Fiber Artist Meg Staley
DESCRIPTION:How do artists think\, work\, and practice? Those questions are explored during Creativity Q+A LIVE\, a series of conversations with Northern Michigan artists at the Glen Arbor Arts Center. Since 2020\, the GAAC has published monthly\, long-form interviews that dig into artists’ creative practices. Staley’s conversation was published in June 2022. To read it\, and all the Creativity Q+A interviews\, go to GlenArborArt.org / ARTISTS. The GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor.

SUMMARY:COFFEE WITH THE AUTHORS - Holly Wren Spaulding
DESCRIPTION:Coffee With The Authors is a live\, conversational interview with local and regional authors about the writing craft and process. This Glen Arbor Arts Center series continues July 29\, 11 am with poet Holly Wren Spaulding in a conversation about keeping and banning words. Sarah Bearup-Neal\, GAAC gallery manager\, leads the discussion. \nSpaulding\, a Northern Michigan native now living in Southern Maine\, published her third book of poems\, Familiars\, in 2020. It was a response to the 2015 deletion of words by the Oxford Junior Dictionary. The OJD’s deleted-words list included names of flora and fauna\, in order to make room for newer words from the world of technology\, such as “chatroom” and “bullet point.” Familiars is full of poems about “trees\, flowers\, magic\, touch\, memory\, erasure\, power\, and [Spaulding’s] grief over the changing climate.” Spaulding’s work is a reflection of her long\, close association with the natural world. In her July 29 conversation\, Spaulding will talk about the power of words\, choosing them with care\, and the ways in which she works to keep language vital through her writing. \nCoffee With The Authors is offered without charge. The GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor.

SUMMARY:Creativity Q+A LIVE with Blacksmith Scott Lankton
DESCRIPTION:How do artists think\, work\, and practice? Those questions are explored during Creativity Q+A LIVE\, a series of conversations with Northern Michigan artists at the Glen Arbor Arts Center. On May 14\, 1 pm Leelanau County artist Scott Lankton talks about his practice with Sarah Bearup-Neal\, GAAC gallery manager. The program is free. No reservations are required. Doors open at noon. \nBlacksmith Scott Lankton was “hooked on hot steel” the first time he worked with it. He went on to find a vocation in the forge\, pounding metal into domestic objects of great beauty. Lankton also found that this old art + craft form can be put to use in the pursuit of peace\, and be a way of raising awareness about gun violence — as he raises the profile of his calling – blacksmithing — and how it is more than an historical craft form demonstrated in museum settings. \nCreativity Q+A LIVE is an offshoot of the GAAC’s online feature\, Creativity Q+A. Since 2020\, the GAAC has published monthly\, long-form interviews that dig into artists’ creative practices. Lankton’s conversation was published in October 2022. To read it\, and all the Creativity Q+A interviews\, go to GlenArborArt.org / ARTISTS. The GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor.

SUMMARY:A Little Lunch Music
DESCRIPTION:Pianist Tyler Faruzzi brings music to the Glen Arbor Arts Center’s Main Gallery on April 28 for a lunch hour twofer: his take on some pop standards with the GAAC’s SWIMMING exhibition as the backdrop. The one-hour casual concert begins at noon. It’s open to the public at no charge. \nFaruzzi\, 18\, is a senior at The Leelanau School who has focused on music. However\, learning takes place in the classroom and out\, said Laura Hood\, chairperson of Leelanau School’s Visual and Performing Arts department. \n“At The Leelanau School\, one of our mottos is ‘let your talents and abilities shine.’ So having my students share their music with our Leelanau School community and the Glen Arbor and Traverse City area is a wonderful way to let their talents and abilities shine and for others to experience some of the amazing students we have\,” Hood said. \nA resident of Elmhurst\, Illinois\, Faruzzi\, will attend Elmhurst University this fall. \nVisitors may bring their lunch\, walk freely around the gallery\, and sit and listen as long they wish. The GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. For more information go to GlenArborArt.org / EVENTS.
