DESCRIPTION:The Glen Arbor Art Association [ GAAA ] inaugurates its new gallery and exhibitions space with “New Gallery/New Work\,” on Friday\, January 12\, 2018\, 6-8 p.m. A reception to open the exhibition begins at 6 p.m. \n“New Gallery/New Work” is an invitational show that showcases the work of 25 visual artists from Benzie\, Grand Traverse\, Leelanau\, and Manistee counties. Exhibitors were invited to contribute a piece of work created between May 2016 and November 2017. This time frame mirrors the period during which the GAAA undertook a campaign to expand its building at 6031 S. Lake St. in Glen Arbor.  \nAs part of the exhibition\, the GAAA will offer two different “Talk About Art” interviews with two different sets of “New Gallery/New Works” exhibitors on January 21 and February 11\, 2 p.m. in the gallery. Manitou Winds is comprised of five musicians playing 12 different instruments to create a collage of music textures and styles. SUMMARY:Readers' Theatre: On Golden Pond
DESCRIPTION:The Glen Arbor Art Association [GAAA] Readers’ Theater will hold auditions for On Golden Pond\, Sept. 6\, 7 p.m. at the Glen Lake Community Reformed Church\, 4902 W. MacFarlane Road in Burdickville. The Readers’ Theater production offers roles for three men\, two women\, one teenage boy and a narrator. \nErnest Thompson’s 1979 play focuses on aging couple Ethel and Norman Thayer\, who spend each summer at their home on a lake called Golden Pond. During the year the story takes place\, they are visited by daughter Chelsea with her fiancé Billy Ray and his son Billy Ray Jr. The play explores the often turbulent relationship the young woman shared with her father growing up\, and the difficulties faced by a couple in the twilight years of a long marriage. \nOn Golden Pond is directed by Ron Smith\, and is presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service\, Inc.\, New York. It will be staged at Glen Lake Community Reformed Church on Oct. 20-21. Reservations suggested. Free to attend\, Donations Accepted. DESCRIPTION:In tandem with the Glen Arbor Arts Center’s “In Bloom” exhibition\, April 6 – May 17\, the GAAC offers a flower-focused painting workshop at the GAAC\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. \n“In Bloom” exhibitor Carol C. Spaulding leads “Messing Around With Paint\,” Saturday\, April 7\, 10 am – 3 pm. The cost is $70/GAAC members\, and $85/non-GAAC members. \n“Messing Around” is an introduction to using gouache\, a pigment rich water based paint admired for its vibrant color and its ability to be used both opaquely and transparently. Students will generate new work in an atmosphere where experimentation and a non-judgmental approach to painting will be encouraged. Flowers\, pots\, fruits\, and vegetables will be the focus and inspiration for color and composition. The class will include demonstrations\, prompts for painting exercises\, and suggestions for ways of “getting started.” A materials list will be provided but students can be provided class materials for a $10 fee payable to the instructor. \nFor information or to register\, please go to the GAAC website\, www.glenarborart.org\, and click on “Classes.”

SUMMARY:The Glen Arbor Art Association’s Talk About Art series with Kaz McCue this Sunday
DESCRIPTION:In the TALK ABOUT ART ® series\, our host conducts live interviews with local and regional artists about their art making and thinking. These insightful interviews take place monthly\, January-May\, at no charge. Our current host\, Norm Wheeler\, recently retired from teaching Science and English for 32 years at the Leelanau School. He is the Director of the Lanphier Observatory\, hosting public stargazing two nights a week in summer on Sleeping Bear Bay. The co-founder and continuing host of the Beach Bards Bonfire\, a gathering for by heart poetry\, storytelling\, and music on Friday nights in high summer at the Leelanau School Beach. He also helped Crispin Campbell\, Ben Bricker\, and Tom Fordyce build the first stage behind the Lake St. Studio for the first season of the Manitou Music Festival many years ago. Admission is Free. \nKaz McCue has spent the past twenty-five years working in the arts as a visual artist\, educator\, curator\, and arts administrator. He holds a BFA in photography from Parson’s School of Design and an MFA in mixed media from Long Island University/ C.W. Post Campus. Kaz has received numerous grants and awards and has exhibited his work nationally and internationally. As a curator\, he has put together over 200 exhibitions and over 100 lectures and artist presentations. Kaz has taught at numerous universities\, colleges and academies and has served in several arts administration positions. \nAs a professional\, Kaz has dedicated his life to the arts. His enthusiasm and dedication has helped to define his career and his belief in the power of the arts has driven his commitment to participating in the process of the arts and mentoring young artists. Kaz is currently an Instructor of Visual Arts at the Leelanau School in Glen Arbor and he also serves as the Artistic Director at Michigan Legacy Art Park.

DESCRIPTION:ARTISTS PAINT THE CRYSTAL RIVER \nThe theme of this year’s Quick Draw is the Crystal River.  This gem of a waterway gently meanders through Glen Arbor beginning at the intersection/trailhead of CR675 (Crystal View Road)\, the east side of Glen Arbor and along M22 before heading toward Lake Michigan.  Artist paintings must have some part of the river as its theme. They are on their honor to paint only two hours.

DESCRIPTION:New Views: A Storm of Art opens June 10 at the Glen Arbor Art Association\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. An artist’s reception opens the show at 6 p.m. Awards will be presented at 7 p.m. \nThe juried exhibition – created in response to the Aug. 2\, 2015 wind and hail storm – interprets\, rather than documents\, the storm. Underlining New Views is the philosophy that artmaking offers a way to address difficult events\, and provides an avenue for transformation and hope. \nNew Views continues through June 23.
