DESCRIPTION:After a year’s hiatus for construction\, the Glen Arbor Arts Center’s Artist-in- Residence [AIR] program resumes in May. This program of working residencies was established in the 1990s\, and now attracts applicants from throughout the United States. Ohio resident Stephanie Craig works with clay\, and will be using her May 20 – June 2 residency to prepare for an upcoming exhibition\, “Crafting a Safe Home\,” at the Ohio Craft Museum in Columbus\, Ohio.  \nAt the end of each residency\, the artist-resident makes a public presentation at the GAAC\, and talks about the work accomplished during this two-week stay. DESCRIPTION:As part of the “In Bloom” exhibition\, the Glen Arbor Arts Center [GAAC] goes into the woods to talk about “Forest Flowers” with Glen Arbor artists and sisters Beth Bricker and Cherrie Bricker Stege on Sunday\, May 6\, 2 p.m. at the next “Talk About Art” conversation. \nIn the 1980s the Brickers and their mother\, the late Ananda Bricker\, created porcelain sculptures of local woodland flowers known as “Forest Flowers.” They were exhibited throughout the Midwest\, and at the Smithsonian Museum\, and became the basis for a home- and art-based business that supported three families. Along the way\, the Brickers found a way to translate their deep love of this area’s flora into an object of beauty. A selection of “Forest Flowers” are part of the “In Bloom\,” an exhibition of flower paintings and sculptures by five local artists. \n“Talk About Art” is free and open to the public. “In Bloom” continues through May 17. DESCRIPTION:Luunappi is a Finnish term for a snappy sound to the ear. Luunappi also means an afternoon of snappy music\, poems and stories for kids and families on Sunday\, March 11\, 2 p.m. at the Glen Arbor Arts Center [GAAC]\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. \nLeelanau County musicians and raconteurs Norm Wheeler and Pat Niemisto will fill the GAAC gallery with luunappi-infused songs and tale tales as part of the GAAC’s celebration of Youth Art Month. An exhibition of work by Glen Lake School sixth-grade students and the GAAC’s After School Art kids will be on display March 1 – 23\, 2018. \nPatrick Niemisto and Norm Wheeler create a grab bag of family and children’s entertainment. From Woodie Guthrie and Bill Staines to J. W. DESCRIPTION:March is national Youth Art Month. The Glen Arbor Arts Center [GAAC] celebrates the work of young creatives with an exhibition by Glen Lake Elementary School sixth graders taught by Leah Lawson\, Glen Lake Elementary art teacher\, and the GAAC’s After School Art kids led by instructor Sarah Cheek-Toomey. The show runs from March 1 – 23. \nStarted in 1961 by the Art & Creative Materials Institute\, Youth Art Month focuses on the importance of art education in citizenship\, as a contributors to quality of life for all\, and directs attention to the value of art education as a strategy for developing critical and divergent thinking skills. One of the female roles\nrequires an Italian accent. In this pair of Spades\, “The John Doe Caper” and “The Flopsy\, Mopsy and Cottontail Caper\,” Dashiell Hammett’s fictional detective finds himself matching wits with a range of colorful criminals and characters. The plays will be directed by Readers’ Theater veteran Harriett Mittelberger. \nRehearsals will take place on Wednesdays. Performances are April 13 – 14\, 7:30 p.m. at the church. The Readers’ Theater production offers roles for three men\, two women\, one teenage boy and a narrator. \nErnest Thompson’s 1979 play focuses on aging couple Ethel and Norman Thayer\, who spend each summer at their home on a lake called Golden Pond. During the year the story takes place\, they are visited by daughter Chelsea with her fiancé Billy Ray and his son Billy Ray Jr. The play explores the often turbulent relationship the young woman shared with her father growing up\, and the difficulties faced by a couple in the twilight years of a long marriage. \nOn Golden Pond is directed by Ron Smith\, and is presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service\, Inc.\, New York. DESCRIPTION:In tandem with the Glen Arbor Arts Center’s “In Bloom” exhibition\, April 6 – May 17\, the GAAC offers a flower-focused painting workshop at the GAAC\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. \n“In Bloom” exhibitor Carol C. Spaulding leads “Messing Around With Paint\,” Saturday\, April 7\, 10 am – 3 pm. The cost is $70/GAAC members\, and $85/non-GAAC members. \n“Messing Around” is an introduction to using gouache\, a pigment rich water based paint admired for its vibrant color and its ability to be used both opaquely and transparently. Students will generate new work in an atmosphere where experimentation and a non-judgmental approach to painting will be encouraged. Flowers\, pots\, fruits\, and vegetables will be the focus and inspiration for color and composition. DESCRIPTION:In the TALK ABOUT ART ® series\, our host conducts live interviews with local and regional artists about their art making and thinking. These insightful interviews take place monthly\, January-May\, at no charge. Our current host\, Norm Wheeler\, recently retired from teaching Science and English for 32 years at the Leelanau School. He is the Director of the Lanphier Observatory\, hosting public stargazing two nights a week in summer on Sleeping Bear Bay. The co-founder and continuing host of the Beach Bards Bonfire\, a gathering for by heart poetry\, storytelling\, and music on Friday nights in high summer at the Leelanau School Beach. He also helped Crispin Campbell\, Ben Bricker\, and Tom Fordyce build the first stage behind the Lake St. Studio for the first season of the Manitou Music Festival many years ago. Admission is Free. \nKaz McCue has spent the past twenty-five years working in the arts as a visual artist\, educator\, curator\, and arts administrator. He holds a BFA in photography from Parson’s School of Design and an MFA in mixed media from Long Island University/ C.W. Post Campus. Kaz has received numerous grants and awards and has exhibited his work nationally and internationally. As a curator\, he has put together over 200 exhibitions and over 100 lectures and artist presentations. Kaz has taught at numerous universities\, colleges and academies and has served in several arts administration positions. \nAs a professional\, Kaz has dedicated his life to the arts. His enthusiasm and dedication has helped to define his career and his belief in the power of the arts has driven his commitment to participating in the process of the arts and mentoring young artists. Kaz is currently an Instructor of Visual Arts at the Leelanau School in Glen Arbor and he also serves as the Artistic Director at Michigan Legacy Art Park.
