SUMMARY:Suzanne Wilson Artist-in-Residence Program Presentations
DESCRIPTION:Since the 1990s\, the Glen Arbor Arts Center has welcomed visiting artists who want to immerse themselves in their work. The GAAC’s Suzanne Wilson Artist-in-Residence program offers up to seven\, creative practitioners a two-week respite from their daily lives in order to focus on a new idea that needs space and time to develop\, to an on-going project that might be nearing conclusion. \nThe 2021 program begins in May. Each of the GAAC’s residents offers a conversational presentation at the end of their stay. The presentations begin at noon at the GAAC. They are free\, and open to the public. On May 28 Indiana potter Samantha Purze talks about her residency. She is developing a series of ceramic vessels that use map-like drawings on the surface to talk about personal connection\, and her visual travels. \nFor more information call the GAAC at 231/334-6112.

SUMMARY:A CELEBRATION: THE PAINTINGS OF AMY L. CLARK-CARELS
DESCRIPTION:The Glen Arbor Arts Center celebrates Amy L. Clark-Carels’s love of watercolor painting in a small exhibition of work May 3 – August 31. This exhibition\, a visual remembrance\, is the GAAC’s second Lobby Gallery exhibit of 2021. It will also be viewable on the GAAC website beginning May 3. \nCarels’s long\, loving history with Glen Arbor dates back to the late 1950s. Her parents began camping here\, then later built a family cottage on Big Glen that the Carels family continues to enjoy today. Carels’s passion and dedication to the visual arts can be seen in her many paintings of local landmarks — from Alligator Hill to interior scenes from the historic Sleeping Bear Inn.  \nThe works in A Celebration offers a curated selection of these iconic paintings. They reflect Carels’s life-long love of the area. Carels divided her time between Glen Arbor and her home in Oakland Township. She passed away in September of 2018. To learn more about Amy Carels\, go to her website: https://www.amycarels.com/ \nFor more information call the GAAC at 231/334-6112; or go to GlenArborArt.org/EXHIBITIONS.

SUMMARY:Plein Air Weekend - Registration
DESCRIPTION:The Glen Arbor Arts Center’s 12th Plein Air Weekend is scheduled for August 6 – 7\, 2021. Northern Michigan’s premier painting weekend\, featuring artists from throughout Michigan and the Midwest\, is Glen Arbor Arts Center’s largest fundraiser. \nThis popular alfresco event takes place throughout Glen Arbor and Empire. Returning in 2021 are the August 6 Quick Draw and August 7 Paint Out events. Due to COVID-19\, the Sundowner has been cancelled this year. Online registration opens March 24\, 9:30 am. The August 7 Paint Out is limited to 70 artists. Registration takes place online at GlenArborArt.org and continues until full. There is no registration limit for the Quick Draw.  \nThe aim and challenge of the Plein Air Weekend is to “capture the moment\,” working quickly to complete a painting. All 2-D works must be initiated and finished on the same day\, rain or shine. The artists return to the Glen Arbor Township Hall in the late afternoon to enter their work in the judged exhibit\, which the public is invited to attend. \nMore information about the Plein Art Weekend and registration is available at the GAAC website\, GlenArborArt.org. SUMMARY:Exhibit: Joan Richmond | Paper + Scissors + Glue = New Collages
DESCRIPTION:Traverse City artist Joan Richmond exhibits collages at the Glen Arbor Arts Center. Paper + Scissors + Glue = New Collages\, an exhibition of 12 new works\, is on display in the GAAC Lobby Gallery January 15 – April 22\, 2021.\nPaper + Scissors + Glue = New Collages may be viewed on-line\, too. Go to: GlenArborArt.org and click on Exhibitions/Virtual Exhibitions. \nRichmond is more widely known for her distinctive\, spare gouache paintings depicting land- and waterscapes. In recent years\, she has expanded her practice to include compositions assembled from acrylic-painted papers – materials she creates in her studio.\n“This series of collages is a selection from more than 60 pieces I created during COVID-19 isolation\,” Richmond said. “How does one stay creative while fighting off anxiety? I found that making images that were immediate in execution helped me not ‘over think’ the process thus creating a calming\, meditative effect.” \nRichmond discusses how she creates a collage\, what materials and tools she uses in a short video interview with GAAC Gallery Manager Sarah Bearup-Neal. A link to this companion program is at GlenArborArt.org Exhibitions/Virtual Exhibitions. \nThe GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. It is open Monday through Saturday 11 am – 2 pm. SUMMARY:Video Lecture: Creative Resistance – Political Art + Craftivism
DESCRIPTION:Video Lecture: Creative Resistance – Political Art + Craftivism\nViewable on-line September 20 – November 7\, 2020 \nPolitics – past and present – provide ample fodder for creative inspiration.  Sarah Bearup-Neal\, Glen Arbor Arts Center gallery manager\, surveys some of these powerful examples during a slide lecture. Tickets for this on-line program are $10 GAAC members\, $15 nonmembers. Registered viewers will receive by email an access code that will allow them to watch this video presentation anytime from September 20 – November 7\, 2020. Read more and register here: https://glenarborart.org/events/lecture-creative-resistance/. \nFrom Theodore Gericault’s 19th century painting\, the Raft of the Medusa\, to the thousands of pink\, hand-knit caps worn during the historic 2017 Women’s March in Washington\, DC\, the visual arts show themselves to be expressive tools. Craftivism is a creative movement that began to take shape in the early 2000s. It sought to combine visual art with activism\, and turned to the so-called “domestic arts” of embroidery\, knitting and hand stitching to comment on a wide range of current\, topical issues – from feminism to sexism to environmental concerns. \nNOTE: Some material contained in this presentation is sexually suggestive\, and would be considered “adult.” It may not be appropriate for younger viewers. \n“Political Art + Craftivism” is offered in conjunction with the GAAC’s exhibition Power Tools [September 11 – November 5]. In addition to her duties at the GAAC\, Bearup-Neal is a practicing fiber artist. She received a BFA from Michigan State University.

SUMMARY:OUTDOOR GALLERY DEDICATION
DESCRIPTION:A public celebration and dedication of the Glen Arbor Arts Center’s new Outdoor Gallery are July 30\, 5:30 – 8 pm. The GAAC unveiled its new Outdoor Gallery on May 12. The inaugural exhibition features work by Empire painter Mark Mehaffey. Five of Mark’s acrylic paintings were reproduced on 5ft X 5ft aluminum panels and installed on the GAAC’s west and south exterior walls. \nPreceding the 7 pm start of the dedication ceremony\, Mehaffey will create and complete an original painting of the natural area surrounding the GAAC. He will begin painting at 5:30 pm. The framed painting will be available for purchase during the dedication. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the GAAC’s 2021 Outdoor Gallery project. \nThe GAAC’s Outdoor Gallery was two years in the planning. A committee explored the idea of placing on the walls sculptures\, tiles\, murals\, and other media while searching for the most flexible and cost-effective answer. The weatherproof\, aluminum panels on display were created by Image 360 in Traverse City. \nFollowing a months-long\, call-for-entries search\, Mehaffey’s series of contemporary landscape paintings were selected by Glen Arbor juror-artists Hank Feeley and Emory Mead. Mehaffey maintains an active studio practice. He retired from the Lansing Public School system where he taught visual art from 1973 to 2002. He teaches painting both locally and throughout the United States. Mehaffey’s work remains in place until April 2021. The panels will then be available for purchase. Support for the Outdoor Gallery comes through a generous grant from GAAC members Barb and George Cochran. \nThe GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St.\, in Glen Arbor. DESCRIPTION:Due to the coronavirus\, this concert has been cancelled but please check the GAAC’s Facebook page for pop up music events and more updates on their website: https://glenarborart.org/events-page/music-and-concerts/ \n\nIgor and the Red Elvises bring Siberian surf rock to the annual Manitou Music Dune Climb Concert. This concert is free but a Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore pass is required for entry into the Dune Climb. \nLead Elvis Igor Yuzov grew up in the former Soviet Union\, where folk music was the norm and rock ’n roll was illegal. A rebellious streak\, however\, led him to seek out the forbidden music. In 1995\, Yuzov dreamed that Elvis Presley came to him and told him to start playing rock ’n roll and the Red Elvises were born. Evolving over the years\, Yuzov’s music contains humorous lyrics and grooves that forces his audience to dance. \nManitou Music is a project of the Glen Arbor Arts Center. For more information\, please call 231/334-6112

DESCRIPTION:A Short History of Color in Painting\nWednesday\, February 12 | Noon\n \nArt educator Linda Young traces how artists have used color — from the luscious pigments used by 16th century Renaissance artists to the color-drenched canvasses of the 1960s Color Field painters – on Wednesday\, February 12 at the Glen Arbor Arts Center\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. “A Short History of Color in Painting” is a BYO brown bag lecture\, and begins at noon. Coffee and cookies will be provided.\n \nYoung’s talk takes a look at the use of light and color by the Impressionists and Post Impressionists\, the importance of black to the Realists\, radical use of color by the Fauves\, and the energy-charged canvasses of the Futurists and Abstract Expressionists. It is offered as part of the GAAC exhibition COLOR. Young\, a Leelanau County resident\, was the Director of Museum Education at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts for 20 years.\n \nTickets for this event are $10 GAAC member\, $15 nonmembers. SUMMARY:COLOR exhibit: Gallery Reception
DESCRIPTION:The Glen Arbor Arts Center injects COLOR into the new year with an exhibition celebrating chroma\, hue\, tone\, tint and value by 29 artists. COLOR opens Friday\, January 10\, 2020 with a reception from 6 – 8 pm in the gallery.\n \nColor – both the thing and the idea – is more than a seasonal picker-upper. COLOR exhibitors explore how color is used to express emotion\, tension\, energy and action; how color can tell a story. And\, what happens when the artist chooses to invent a palette for the subject – rather than be dictated to by the scene? COLOR exhibitors explore all these ideas and more.\n \nCOLOR continues through March 26. The GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. For more information go to GlenArborArt.org
