SUMMARY:A CELEBRATION: THE PAINTINGS OF AMY L. CLARK-CARELS
DESCRIPTION:The Glen Arbor Arts Center celebrates Amy L. Clark-Carels’s love of watercolor painting in a small exhibition of work May 3 – August 31. This exhibition\, a visual remembrance\, is the GAAC’s second Lobby Gallery exhibit of 2021. It will also be viewable on the GAAC website beginning May 3. \nCarels’s long\, loving history with Glen Arbor dates back to the late 1950s. Her parents began camping here\, then later built a family cottage on Big Glen that the Carels family continues to enjoy today. Carels’s passion and dedication to the visual arts can be seen in her many paintings of local landmarks — from Alligator Hill to interior scenes from the historic Sleeping Bear Inn.  \nThe works in A Celebration offers a curated selection of these iconic paintings. They reflect Carels’s life-long love of the area. Carels divided her time between Glen Arbor and her home in Oakland Township. She passed away in September of 2018. To learn more about Amy Carels\, go to her website: https://www.amycarels.com/ \nFor more information call the GAAC at 231/334-6112; or go to GlenArborArt.org/EXHIBITIONS.

SUMMARY:Plein Air Weekend - Registration
DESCRIPTION:The Glen Arbor Arts Center’s 12th Plein Air Weekend is scheduled for August 6 – 7\, 2021. Northern Michigan’s premier painting weekend\, featuring artists from throughout Michigan and the Midwest\, is Glen Arbor Arts Center’s largest fundraiser. \nThis popular alfresco event takes place throughout Glen Arbor and Empire. Returning in 2021 are the August 6 Quick Draw and August 7 Paint Out events. Due to COVID-19\, the Sundowner has been cancelled this year. Online registration opens March 24\, 9:30 am. The August 7 Paint Out is limited to 70 artists. Registration takes place online at GlenArborArt.org and continues until full. There is no registration limit for the Quick Draw.  \nThe aim and challenge of the Plein Air Weekend is to “capture the moment\,” working quickly to complete a painting. All 2-D works must be initiated and finished on the same day\, rain or shine. The artists return to the Glen Arbor Township Hall in the late afternoon to enter their work in the judged exhibit\, which the public is invited to attend. \nMore information about the Plein Art Weekend and registration is available at the GAAC website\, GlenArborArt.org. SUMMARY:Exhibit: Joan Richmond | Paper + Scissors + Glue = New Collages
DESCRIPTION:Traverse City artist Joan Richmond exhibits collages at the Glen Arbor Arts Center. Paper + Scissors + Glue = New Collages\, an exhibition of 12 new works\, is on display in the GAAC Lobby Gallery January 15 – April 22\, 2021.\nPaper + Scissors + Glue = New Collages may be viewed on-line\, too. Go to: GlenArborArt.org and click on Exhibitions/Virtual Exhibitions. \nRichmond is more widely known for her distinctive\, spare gouache paintings depicting land- and waterscapes. I found that making images that were immediate in execution helped me not ‘over think’ the process thus creating a calming\, meditative effect.” \nRichmond discusses how she creates a collage\, what materials and tools she uses in a short video interview with GAAC Gallery Manager Sarah Bearup-Neal. A link to this companion program is at GlenArborArt.org Exhibitions/Virtual Exhibitions. \nThe GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. It is open Monday through Saturday 11 am – 2 pm. SUMMARY:Video Lecture: Creative Resistance – Political Art + Craftivism
DESCRIPTION:Video Lecture: Creative Resistance – Political Art + Craftivism\nViewable on-line September 20 – November 7\, 2020 \nPolitics – past and present – provide ample fodder for creative inspiration.  Sarah Bearup-Neal\, Glen Arbor Arts Center gallery manager\, surveys some of these powerful examples during a slide lecture. Tickets for this on-line program are $10 GAAC members\, $15 nonmembers. Registered viewers will receive by email an access code that will allow them to watch this video presentation anytime from September 20 – November 7\, 2020. Read more and register here: https://glenarborart.org/events/lecture-creative-resistance/. \nFrom Theodore Gericault’s 19th century painting\, the Raft of the Medusa\, to the thousands of pink\, hand-knit caps worn during the historic 2017 Women’s March in Washington\, DC\, the visual arts show themselves to be expressive tools. Craftivism is a creative movement that began to take shape in the early 2000s. It sought to combine visual art with activism\, and turned to the so-called “domestic arts” of embroidery\, knitting and hand stitching to comment on a wide range of current\, topical issues – from feminism to sexism to environmental concerns. \nNOTE: Some material contained in this presentation is sexually suggestive\, and would be considered “adult.” It may not be appropriate for younger viewers. \n“Political Art + Craftivism” is offered in conjunction with the GAAC’s exhibition Power Tools [September 11 – November 5]. In addition to her duties at the GAAC\, Bearup-Neal is a practicing fiber artist. She received a BFA from Michigan State University.
