SUMMARY:FLAGS Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:The Glen Arbor Arts Center launches its summer exhibition\, FLAGS\, with a reception on May 27\, 5 – 7 pm in the Main Gallery. \nFlags represent everything — from a nation to a world view to one’s affinity and allegiance to a sports team. They’re objects that are saturated with meaning. The GAAC’s FLAGS exhibit offers a variety of flags — artwork that comments on the state of our nation’s culture wars; flags that show sojourners the way to freedom; flags that are prayerful; patriotic in a very traditional sense; and pay homage to the seasons.\nFLAGS continues through August 18. It is viewable online at GlenArborArt.org/EXHIBITS. The GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. For more information call 231/334-6112.

SUMMARY:Woodland Studies
DESCRIPTION:The Glen Arbor Arts Center is exhibiting Woodland Studies\, a small exhibition of black and white photographs by Grand Rapids photographer Rodney Martin. The exhibition runs January 7 – April 13\, 2022 in the GAAC Lobby Gallery. \nMartin focuses his lens on the landscape. For the images in Woodland Studies\, he zeros in on rivers\, woods and orchards in Benzie\, Grand Traverse and Leelanau counties. His images were created in all four seasons; but they are related by the quiet and solitude he frames. There is little evidence of human habitation in these scenes. Instead\, the images are studies of shadow and texture\, shades of gray\, and the deep and refreshing beauty of places off the beaten path. Martin talks about his work\, his tools and his intention in a short video interview with GAAC Gallery Manager Sarah Bearup-Neal. To watch the video go to: GlenArborArt.org/Exhibits/Current. \nWoodland Studies may be viewed in the GAAC Lobby Gallery\, or online: GlenArborArt.org/Exhibits/Current. The GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St.\, in Glen Arbor. Admission is free.

SUMMARY:The Why and How of Seed Saving
DESCRIPTION:Humans have saved seeds since the beginning of time. The Grow Benzie Seed Saving Guild has been saving seeds since its formation in 2008. Two citizen seed savers who tend this project are in conversation. This outdoor program is offered as part of the GAAC’s exhibition Food Is Art / Art Is Food\, in the GAAC gallery through August 19. \nFood and flower seeds don’t just grow in the seed catalog\, but are strategically gathered and harvested. Grow Benzie’s heritage project brings together seed enthusiasts who maintain a seed library at Grow Benzie in Benzonia. The guild offers regular events to teach how to plant for seed harvesting\, save seeds\, and provide a venue to share stories and all aspects of the story of the seed. GAAC Gallery Manager Sarah Bearup-Neal will talk about this ongoing project with Josh Stoltz\, Grow Benzie executive director; and Becky Thatcher\, project seed librarian. \nFor more information about this free program or the Food Is Art/ Art Is Food exhibition\, or call 231/334-6112.
