The exhibit opens March 31 with a reception\, 5-7 pm in the GAAC Main Gallery. \nSwimming focuses on a familiar activity that puts bodies into bodies of water. It explores the physical exercise literally; as a metaphor for success [swimming] or failure [sinking\, underwater]; a direct\, sensory experience; and through swimwear. \nThe exhibition includes two companion programs: \nAuthor Talk: A recorded conversation with John H. SUMMARY:Creative Wellness: Exploring Grief through Creativity
DESCRIPTION:Exploring Grief through Creativity provides a supportive\, creative retreat for adults 18+ moving through grief to examine and process their experiences of the death of a loved one. Saturday\, March 11 from 9 am – 5 pm at Pine Street Studios\, two doors down from GAAC. \nThis full-day retreat includes facilitation by a licensed therapist and three workshops led by professional teaching artists. Participants will work as a group and individually to explore how a creative practice can support the shifting impacts of grief. Workshops will involve learning to create and keep a visual journal\, vibrational sound immersion\, and clay hand building. All supplies are included. No art experience is required. SUMMARY:Creativity Q+A LIVE with Mark Mehaffey
DESCRIPTION:How do artists think\, work\, and practice? Those questions are explored during Creativity Q+A LIVE\, a series of conversations with Northern Michigan artists at the Glen Arbor Arts Center. The first\, 2023 conversation is February 25\, 11 am with Leelanau County resident Mark Mehaffey. The program is free. No reservations are required. Doors open at 10:30 am. \nMehaffey is an artist whose creative work refuses to be shoehorned into tidy boxes. He moves fluidly between representing the visible world\, and working with not-so-representational subjects: marks\, lines\, scratches\, color stories. His practice is less focused on “subjects” than it is on ideas\, and “what-if?”. Working primarily in water-based media\, Mehaffey paints\, draws\, collages\, and taught art in the public school for 30 years. \nCreativity Q+A LIVE is an offshoot of the GAAC’s online feature\, Creativity Q+A. Since 2020\, the GAAC has published monthly\, long-form interviews that dig into artists’ creative practices. Mehaffey’s conversation was published in December 2022. DESCRIPTION:The Glen Arbor Arts Center hosts Leelanau County writers Jacob Wheeler and Anne-Marie Oomen for coffee and conversation about their newly published nonfiction books. The Coffee With The Authors book discussion is November 26\, 11 am at the GAAC\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. Both writers have won recognition for their writing\, but their writing springs from different sources: Anne-Marie’s from personal history; Jacob’s from deeply researched journalism. Both writers will talk about the process of making\, and publishing their books. \nIn his second book\, Angel of the Garbage Dump\, Jacob Wheeler executes an in-depth\, feeling portrait of Maine native\, the late Hanley Denning\, who saw poverty and desperation in its ugliest form\, and refused to turn a blind eye. A former track star at Bowdoin College\, Denning was struck by what she saw at a city dump in Guatemala: garbage pickers competing with vultures for the food dumped by trucks\, toddlers playing amidst rats. Wheeler details Denning’s efforts to create Safe Passage\, a nonprofit organization focused on bringing significant and lasting change to the garbage pickers and their children. Wheeler is editor and publisher of the Glen Arbor Sun\, which he founded in 1996; adjunct faculty with Northwestern Michigan College; and adviser to the staff of NMC’s White Pine Press. \nAs Long As I Know You narrates Anne-Marie Oomen’s journey to finally knowing her mother – as her mother’s memories are being erased by dementia. It explores how humor and compassion grow belatedly between a mother and daughter who don’t much like each other. It’s a personal map to find a mother who may have been there all along\, then losing her again in the time of Covid. As Long As I Know You is the recipient of the Sue William Silverman Prize for Creative Nonfiction. SUMMARY:Artist In Residence Presentation - Ana Spencer
DESCRIPTION:Illinois potter and teacher Ana Spencer will use her Glen Arbor Arts Center residency to get “a fresh take” on her materials and process. Spencer’s residency is Sept. 25 – October 8. During that time she’ll explore process issues such as glazing\, and surface design techniques. \nEach of the GAAC’s artist-residents offer a conversational presentation at the end of their stay. The presentations begin at noon at the GAAC. They are free\, and open to the public. On October 7 Spencer will discuss her new work\, which combines function with ornate finish. \nSince the 1990s\, the GAAC has welcomed visiting artists who want to immerse themselves in their work. The GAAC’s AIR program offers up to seven\, creative practitioners a two-week respite from their daily lives in order to focus on a new idea that needs space\, or to develop an on-going project. DESCRIPTION:Mixed media artist Kimberly Stoney turns to the world of music for a new series of collaged paintings during her Glen Arbor Arts Center residency August 28 – September 10. A Massachusetts resident\, Stoney’s residency project was inspired by a line from a Talking Heads song\, which refers to “home” – a subject that recurs in her practice.   \nEach of the GAAC’s artist-residents offer a conversational presentation at the end of their stay. SUMMARY:Plein Air Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Painters from across Michigan and the Midwest will converge on Glen Arbor August 4\, 5\, and 6  for the Glen Arbor Arts Center’s 13th Plein Air Weekend.  \nThis year the event will be highlighted by three outdoor painting competitions and two exhibitions of original work. The Sundowner is Thursday\, August 4th. The artists will work to capture the sunset. The Quick Draw is Friday\, August 5. This year’s theme asks artists to paint their interpretation of “Pastoral  Life: Capturing Images of Barns\, Farms\, and Fields.” The public is welcome to watch the artists in action. Quick Draw and Sundowner paintings will be on view and for sale at the Glen Arbor Town Hall\, 6394 W. Western Avenue/M-22\, on Friday\, August 5\, 5 – 6:30 pm. Glen Arbor artist Barb Cochran will judge the paintings. There will be cash prizes. \nThe weekend’s culminating event\, the Paint Out exhibit and sale\, is Saturday\, August 6. It features work by 70 artists who registered early to be included in this all-day painting event. The evening viewing and sale is 5:30 – 7:30 pm at the Glen Arbor Township Hall. More than 100 works of art will be exhibited and offered for sale on a first-come basis (at the sound of the gong at 6 pm).  Grand Rapids art gallery owners\, Scott and Linda LaFontsee\, will judge and award cash prizes for the paintings including the Amy L. Clark-Carels $1\,000 first place prize. Entry to Saturday evening’s show and sale is ticketed. Tickets will be $10 and and available at the door. Children under 12 are free. \nThe Plein Air Weekend is a major fundraising event for the Glen Arbor Art Center. SUMMARY:Artist In Residence -  Valerie Mann
DESCRIPTION:Fiber artist Valerie Mann will explore and fabricate a new body of work based on grief\, both personal and global\, during her Glen Arbor Arts Center residency June 12 – 25. Mann\, a resident of Saline\, Michigan\, will combine and sew repurposed materials into sculptural pieces. \nEach of the GAAC’s artist-residents offer a conversational presentation at the end of their stay. The presentations begin at noon at the GAAC. They are free\, and open to the public. On June 24 Mann will discuss her multilayered works that explore color\, shape\, negative space and shadows.  \nSince the 1990s\, the GAAC has welcomed visiting artists who want to immerse themselves in their work. The GAAC’s AIR program offers up to seven\, creative practitioners a two-week respite from their daily lives in order to focus on a new idea that needs space\, or to develop an on-going project. DESCRIPTION:The flora and fauna of the Sleeping Bear Dunes will be the focus of Detroit artist Quinn Faylor’s work during their Glen Arbor Arts Center residency May 29 – June 11. Faylor will spend two weeks creating paintings and textile works that continue their exploration of home\, and human relationships to land and the natural world.  \nEach of the GAAC’s artist-residents offer a conversational presentation at the end of their stay. The presentations begin at noon at the GAAC. They are free\, and open to the public. On June 10 Faylor will discuss their residency in a place that stands in stark contrast to their home turf in Detroit.  \nSince the 1990s\, the GAAC has welcomed visiting artists who want to immerse themselves in their work. The GAAC will collaborate with Up North Pride to create the Unconditional PRIDE Artists PopUP + Demo\, a celebration of the visual\, performing and literary arts by LGBQT creatives and allies. \nTen spaces will be reserved for artist-exhibitors at the June 4 pop-up.
