It weaves together memories from her life in the upper Midwest with nearly fifty years of environmental policy work\, presenting a unique insider’s perspective into the quest to protect the Great Lakes. Her book also charts a more sustainable path moving forward\, offering a bold alternative to the “boom and bust” cycle of resource extraction that have led to both environmental and economic challenges. Copies of the book will be available for purchase. Ms. Elder’s talk is presented in partnership with the Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes.

SUMMARY:Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes Annual Spring Training
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes annual spring training is a once-a-year chance for volunteers to hear the latest park news from park staff and important safety tips from park safety experts. The 1 pm general training will be followed by 2 pm breakout sessions for Adopt-A-Trail\, Adopt-A-Beach\, Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail\, Preventative Search and Rescue\, and the Track Chair program.  \nFor those unable to attend\, we will be streaming and recording the general session. More information on this option will be available later.  \nFriends of Sleeping Bear Dunes volunteers logged over 11\,000 hours in 2023 through twelve Friends organized programs including Adopt-A-Beach\, Adopt-A-Trail\, and Adopt-A-River. Thanks to the efforts of dedicated Friends volunteers\, 2\,360 pounds of trash was collected by Adopt-A-Beach volunteers\, and 2\,905 hours were logged on the Sleeping Bear Dunes trails by volunteers keeping visitors safe and cleaning the park trails. The Preventive Search and Rescue team made over 30\,000 contacts with visitors making sure they are prepared for distance hikes within the park. Friends volunteers also maintain the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail; grooming it for cross-country skiing in the winter and blowing off debris\, fixing erosion\, and removing downed trees during the hiking and biking seasons.\nMore information on volunteer opportunities with the Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes\, can be found at friendsofsleepingbear.org.

After a short introduction of the book\, the following featured speakers will share funny and informative insight into our area history… \n* Mike Bolton is a 4th generation resident and Large Animal Veterinarian. He will share “The County Line (and a River) Runs Through It! A Brief History of the Centennial Manning Farm.”\n* Dave Taghon\, an Empire resident all his life\, has been instrumental in the creation of the Empire Area Museum. He will talk about Empire history\, what’s preserved in the museum\, and the museum’s 50th anniversary.\n* Amy Ellison\, a local massage therapist\, will share behind-the-scenes stories of what it was like being a “clerkette” for her grandmother\, Elsie Warnes. Elsie taught her young employees by sprinkling life’s lessons with lots of laughter.\n* Dale DeVries is a retired Michigan school teacher\, who has spent his retirement years photographing landscapes and wildlife. He will display some of his popular photos of the Sleeping Bear Dunes area and will offer photography tips to help you capture your own memories.\n* Kerry Kelly\, retired from DOW Chemical and current Chair of the Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes will round out the program with park and Friends updates. DESCRIPTION:The sky is the limit at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.  Join park rangers and astronomers from the Grand Traverse Astronomical Society (GTAS) on Saturday\, July 14 at the Dune Climb parking lot. On that date\, two events will offer you opportunities to focus on the sky. The first event is from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and will allow visitors to safely view our closest star\, the sun\, using a solar telescope. The second event will be from 9:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Feel free to hike up the dunes at the Dune Climb during the event\, watch a sunset at 9:29 p.m.\, and rejoin the rangers and astronomers in the parking lot at the base of the dunes. \nTake advantage of the very young moon to relax under the stars\, view distant celestial objects\, observe Venus\, Jupiter\, and Saturn. Mars will make its appearance around 11:00 p.m. \n \nEach event will feature drop-in stations for you to visit at your leisure. Be sure to stop by the ranger greeter table in the parking lot at the Dune Climb for more information about the stations and their locations. Visit with Friends of Sleeping Bear! We will have a table next to the NPS table.\n \nAt the Dune Climb\, please park in the row furthest from the dunes with your headlights facing M-109. Overflow parking\, within easy walking distance to the Dune Climb\, is in the Great Lakes Picnic Area. The picnic area entrance is located just south of the entrance to the Dune Climb. Follow the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail from the parking area to the Dune Climb. Volunteers will be assisting with parking at both locations.\n \nAll sky programs offered by the National Lakeshore are free. Participants need only purchase the park entrance pass or have an annual pass displayed in their vehicle to join in the fun. Programs will be cancelled if the sky is not visible due to weather conditions. The decision to cancel is usually made two hours in advance. Please call 231-326-4700\, ext. 5005\, for a voicemail message with the decision. \n \nFor all evening astronomy events\, bring a flashlight for the walk back to your car and bug spray\, if needed. DESCRIPTION:At Burfiend Barn in Port Oneida\n| Event Date: June 18 – 20\, 2015\nFriends of Sleeping Bear Dunes\nThe park will again be hosting our successful barn restoration workshop June 18-20th at the John Burfiend Barn located on Port Oneida Road\, four (4) miles north of Glen Arbor\, Michigan on M-22. This year marks the 19th year of the partnership between the Michigan Barn Preservation Network and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in developing this series of “hands-on” workshops. The park and the Michigan Barn Preservation Network are providing the skilled labor to put on this workshop. \nThe workshop will address “Barn Floor\, Siding\, Post\, Ramp\, Window and Door Repair and Construction.” The John Burfiend Barn was the site of the first park and Michigan Barn Preservation Network workshop in 1997. The course will include 1) basics about structural and load analysis for post placement and repair\, 2) repair of floors and walkways\, 3) wood ramp installation\, 5) large and pedestrian door repair\, construction and installation\, 6) wood window repair\, 7) exterior siding repair and installation\, and 8) tool safety while completing the task presented. This workshop is again able to provide a unique experience for all participants. \nThe course is set up so participants receive “hands on” training of all techniques. The workshop begins on site at 9:00 a.m. each day. There is no cost to participants. Tools and materials will be provided. Participants should wear boots\, gloves\, and bring a sack lunch for each day that they attend. Participants can sign up for any number of days. \nWorkers are not required to be skilled in the building trades\, though experience will be helpful and appreciated. The purpose of the workshop is to teach the techniques and train owners and those interested how to do restoration work on timber and frame structures\, including concrete and stonework. Past workshop attendees have ranged in age from 7 to 75 with each contributing their own unique skills to the project. \nCampsites will be provided for those volunteers who wish to camp for those days they are signed up for the workshop.
