Food has meant more to the Anishinaabek than simple subsistence. It has provided economics, told time and is a central part of cultural practices. This unique talk not only discusses the history and importance of indigenous foods of the Great Lakes to the Anishinaabek but samples of native food will be provided to the audience.
Native American populations were subjected to laws and policies forced to assimilate them into American culture and society. These policies accumulated into Indian boarding schools. These institutions of forced assimilation operated for a century and totaled 400 across the country, including 4 in Michigan. This talk will look at the creation of the schools and
