SUMMARY:Talk About Art with Poet Fleda Brown
DESCRIPTION:The Glen Arbor Art Association’s (GAAA) “Talk About Art” series continues with host Norm Wheeler in conversation with Traverse City poet Fleda Brown on Sunday\, May 7\, 2 p.m. at The Leelanau School in Glen Arbor. There is no charge. \nIn a wide-ranging conversation about the craft of writing\, Wheeler and Brown will talk about how life events — both small and large — have found their way into her writing. Recently\, the artist used her craft to examine a cancer diagnosis\, which lead to a blog and a new volume of poems\, My Wobbly Bicycle: Meditations on Cancer and the Creative Life\, published in 2016. The author of nine books of poetry and two essay collections\, Brown is the former Poet Laureate of Delaware (2001-2006). She taught for many years at the University of Delaware\, where she founded the Poets in the Schools Program\, and now teaches in The Rainier Writing Workshop\, Pacific Lutheran University’s Low Residency MFA Program. \nThe Leelanau School is located at 1 Old Homestead Road in Glen Arbor. SUMMARY:Center Gallery: The Flower Show
DESCRIPTION:Spring arrives in full flower when Center Gallery in Glen Arbor opens its 2017 season with “The Flower Show\,” May 26. This three-person exhibit showcases two different approaches to floral paintings by Grand Rapids resident Margo Burian and Lauren Everett Finn of Honor; and the porcelain pottery of Matt McGovern of Cedar. An artist’s reception is May 26\, 6 – 8 p.m. at the gallery\, 6023 S. Lake St. \nWorking in oil paint\, Burian looks at and sketches flowers both in and out-of-doors\, then returns to the subject in winter as a reminder of the season ahead. Finn brings to “The Flower Show” work from her 100 Bouquets series\, a self-assigned project to depict flowers —both real and imaginary — in acrylic paint\, oil stick\, pencil and a range of other media. McGovern will show porcelain flower baskets and vases finished in his signature soda kiln-fired glazes. \n“The Flower Show” continues through June 29. The gallery is open Thursday through Monday\, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. through mid-June\, then seven days weekly through September. For more information\, please call 231/334-3179; or go to the Lake Street Studios website\, lakestreetstudiosglenarbor.com.
