SUMMARY:Carol C Spaulding leads Messing around with Paint
DESCRIPTION:In tandem with the Glen Arbor Arts Center’s “In Bloom” exhibition\, April 6 – May 17\, the GAAC offers a flower-focused painting workshop at the GAAC\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. \n“In Bloom” exhibitor Carol C. Spaulding leads “Messing Around With Paint\,” Saturday\, April 7\, 10 am – 3 pm. The cost is $70/GAAC members\, and $85/non-GAAC members. \n“Messing Around” is an introduction to using gouache\, a pigment rich water based paint admired for its vibrant color and its ability to be used both opaquely and transparently. Students will generate new work in an atmosphere where experimentation and a non-judgmental approach to painting will be encouraged. Flowers\, pots\, fruits\, and vegetables will be the focus and inspiration for color and composition. The class will include demonstrations\, prompts for painting exercises\, and suggestions for ways of “getting started.” A materials list will be provided but students can be provided class materials for a $10 fee payable to the instructor. \nFor information or to register\, please go to the GAAC website\, www.glenarborart.org\, and click on “Classes.”

SUMMARY:Talk About Art: Sculptor Bill Allen
DESCRIPTION:The Glen Arbor Art Association’s (GAAA) “Talk About Art” series continues with host Norm Wheeler in conversation with sculptor Bill Allen on Sunday\, April 9\, 2 p.m. at The Leelanau School in Glen Arbor. There is no charge. \nAllen is known throughout the region for his large-scale\, welded steel sculpture celebrating a wide range of four-legged animals. In the early 2000s Allen began exploring other media and began creating mixed media paintings — sculptural compositions made from drift wood and other treasures he found washed up on local beaches. These works found their way into a 2010 collaborative project he undertook with Traverse City poet Fleda Brown whose poetry he used as the starting point for new works. Allen is a self-taught visual artist who lives in Maple City. \nThe Leelanau School is located at 1 Old Homestead Road in Glen Arbor. For more information\, please call the GAAA at 231/334-6112\, or go to the GAAA website: glenarborart.org.
