SUMMARY:Leelanau Land and Water: Paintings by Margo Burian
DESCRIPTION:Paintings of Leelanau County’s land and water – as processed through the imagination of Grand Rapids artist Margo Burian – are on display next at Center Gallery\, 6023 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. A public reception opens the show July 18\, 6 p.m. \n  \nBurian’s lush\, atmospheric oil paintings of the region are not\, she says\, a strict record of natural features and landmarks. “I have taken liberties with place and nature to move the painting from an accounting or laundry list to an interpretation\,” Burian said. Water – and its “ability to change at a moment’s notice” – plays an important role in her painting\, which begin as field sketches\, then developed in her studio. \n  \nThis show continues through July 24. For more information\, please call 231/334-3179. \n

SUMMARY:Music on the Mountain at The Homestad - Kyle Jennings
DESCRIPTION:Good friends\, a great view\, and some incredible live music await you during The Homestead’s 2014 Music on the Mountain Summer Concert Series. \n \nAmerican singer/songwriter Kyle Jennings arrived on the music scene in 2004 when his album “Shine” was released with Dark Horse Records in Nashville. Out of the box\, Jennings’ music made an aggressive first impression likely due to cross-genre rock influences of his early youth\, such as Journey\, Bon Jovi\, Bruce Springsteen\, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. A gritty mix of Americana\, Rock\, Country\, and Blues marble Jennings’ musical style. \nTickets: $15 in advance; $20 at the event.  Call 231.334.5100 to reserve. \nTransportation to the top of Bay Mountain begins at 6 p.m.  In the event of inclement weather\, concerts will be held inside Mountain Flowers Lodge.

DESCRIPTION:The sixteenth annual Dune Climb concert will take place Sunday\, July 13 at 7:00 p.m. Imagine a beautiful summer’s evening at the foot of the Dune Climb in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore\, hundreds of families enjoying their pre-concert picnics and then a musical program provided by artists of national stature: this is the magical mixture which has filled audiences with warm memories every year since the first Dune Climb concert in 1998. The setting is magnificent and the music is even better. The concert at the Dune Climb is presented annually by the Glen Arbor Art Association and is free to the public. Because of the unique venue and incomparable music it routinely draws an audience of several thousand. \n  \nThis year’s performers will be the Moxie Strings\, an electrifying combination of fiddler Diana Ladio and cellist Alison Lynn. With their feel-good melodies and foot-stomping\, rock influenced rhythms; these young women put a fresh spin on Celtic and Americana music. Though rooted in tradition\, the pair offers listeners the unique opportunity to experience two of the world’s oldest instruments and genres through a young\, progressive lens. World percussionist\, Fritz McGirr\, will perform with the Moxie Strings and will add another spirited dimension to an already high-energy performance. \n  \nThere is no charge for the 7:00 p.m. concert; however\, a National Park pass is required for parking. Free shuttle busses will provide transportation to overflow parking lots. Bring chairs or blankets to sit on. Some folding chairs are also provided in front of the stage. In the event of rain\, the show will go on at the Glen Arbor Town Hall. \n  \nThe Dune Climb concert is part of the Glen Arbor Art Association’s Manitou Music Festival which is underwritten in part by grants from the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs and Oleson Foundation\, as well as corporate sponsorships from Art’s Tavern\, Cherry Republic\, Glen Lake Chamber of Commerce\, The Homestead Resort\, McCahill’s Crossing Dairy Bar and Motel\, On the Narrows Marina and individual contributions.  The full schedule of concerts is available at glenarborart.org or by calling the Glen Arbor Art Association 231-334-6112. \n

SUMMARY:Rock The River Concert
DESCRIPTION:Grupo Ayé is the perfect choice to headline for “Rock the River\,” The Leelanau School’s benefit concert. Much more than a Cuban salsa band\, the group has crafted its own cultural identity by incorporating various genres including Latin jazz\, merengue and mambo\, among others. The band also takes pride in their showmanship; making shows a complete experience for their audiences. Robert Mulligan\, who heads the band\, is a Leelanau alumnus\, who studied percussion at the Interlochen Arts Academy for a year and went on to further study jazz and percussion. Fluent in Spanish\, he has also spent time traveling through Latin America and Spain\, helping him expand his musical and cultural knowledge. Individual band members have put in time with orchestras\, worked with individuals such as Aretha Franklin and taught music at the college level. “The band’s got quite the resume\,” Mulligan said\, “I’m very fortunate to be surrounded by talented artists such as this.” Grupo Ayé is one of the most unique bands in the Midwest. \nThe Friends of The Leelanau School and the Glen Arbor Art Association are working on this event together to raise community awareness of the school; the unique education it offers and its importance to the Glen Arbor area. Featuring a former graduate and his exceptional band is an excellent place to start and provides an opportunity to highlight some of the success students of the school achieve. \nAlong with the music on the green at The Leelanau School\, Mexican food will be available for purchase. You are invited to bring friends and family for an evening of listening\, dancing and picnicking on the shores of the Crystal River.
