SUMMARY:'Postcards From The Lake': Peggy Hawley/Bill Perkins
DESCRIPTION:There’ll be “Postcards From The Lake\,” an exhibition of work celebrating summer at the cottage by painter Peggy Hawley and twig furniture maker Bill Perkins July 25-31\, Center Gallery\, 6023 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. A reception opens the show July 25\, 6 p.m. \n  \nHawley\, a Frankfort resident\, has created a series of narrative paintings that are vignettes from an imagined summer vacation at Lake Michigan. Her oil paintings express a dream-like quality of remembrance\, summer light and old cottages with rowboats on the shore. Postcards with quick jottings accompany each painting\, and tell a short story about each of the works. \n  \nPerkins was first introduced to the idea of making furniture from branches\, twigs and bark when he was a child visiting an “up-north cottage.” The Cedar resident’s work evokes the tradition of Adirondack camp furniture and the Arts and Crafts Movement aesthetic. \n  \nFor more information please call 231/334-3179.

SUMMARY:Leelanau Land and Water: Paintings by Margo Burian
DESCRIPTION:Paintings of Leelanau County’s land and water – as processed through the imagination of Grand Rapids artist Margo Burian – are on display next at Center Gallery\, 6023 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. A public reception opens the show July 18\, 6 p.m. \n  \nBurian’s lush\, atmospheric oil paintings of the region are not\, she says\, a strict record of natural features and landmarks. “I have taken liberties with place and nature to move the painting from an accounting or laundry list to an interpretation\,” Burian said. Water – and its “ability to change at a moment’s notice” – plays an important role in her painting\, which begin as field sketches\, then developed in her studio. \n  \nThis show continues through July 24. For more information\, please call 231/334-3179. \n

SUMMARY:Music on the Mountain at The Homestad - Kyle Jennings
DESCRIPTION:Good friends\, a great view\, and some incredible live music await you during The Homestead’s 2014 Music on the Mountain Summer Concert Series. \n \nAmerican singer/songwriter Kyle Jennings arrived on the music scene in 2004 when his album “Shine” was released with Dark Horse Records in Nashville. Out of the box\, Jennings’ music made an aggressive first impression likely due to cross-genre rock influences of his early youth\, such as Journey\, Bon Jovi\, Bruce Springsteen\, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. A gritty mix of Americana\, Rock\, Country\, and Blues marble Jennings’ musical style. \nTickets: $15 in advance; $20 at the event.  Call 231.334.5100 to reserve. \nTransportation to the top of Bay Mountain begins at 6 p.m.  In the event of inclement weather\, concerts will be held inside Mountain Flowers Lodge.

Though rooted in tradition\, the pair offers listeners the unique opportunity to experience two of the world’s oldest instruments and genres through a young\, progressive lens. World percussionist\, Fritz McGirr\, will perform with the Moxie Strings and will add another spirited dimension to an already high-energy performance. \n  \nThere is no charge for the 7:00 p.m. concert; however\, a National Park pass is required for parking. Free shuttle busses will provide transportation to overflow parking lots. Bring chairs or blankets to sit on. Some folding chairs are also provided in front of the stage. In the event of rain\, the show will go on at the Glen Arbor Town Hall. \n  \nThe Dune Climb concert is part of the Glen Arbor Art Association’s Manitou Music Festival which is underwritten in part by grants from the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs and Oleson Foundation\, as well as corporate sponsorships from Art’s Tavern\, Cherry Republic\, Glen Lake Chamber of Commerce\, The Homestead Resort\, McCahill’s Crossing Dairy Bar and Motel\, On the Narrows Marina and individual contributions.  The full schedule of concerts is available at glenarborart.org or by calling the Glen Arbor Art Association 231-334-6112. \n
