It explores the physical exercise literally; as a metaphor for success [swimming] or failure [sinking\, underwater]; a direct\, sensory experience; and through swimwear. \nThe exhibition includes two companion programs: \nAuthor Talk: A recorded conversation with John H. Hartig\, Ph.D\, author of the 2022 book Great Lakes Champions\, the story of 14 people who loved the Great Lakes so much that they devoted their careers to leading grassroots partnerships to clean up the most polluted of these freshwater seas. \nWalk + Talk: GAAC Gallery Manager Sarah Bearup-Neal leads a conversational walking tour of the SWIMMING exhibit\, and talks about selected works. SUMMARY:Creativity Q+A LIVE with Artist Angela Saxon
DESCRIPTION:How do artists think\, work\, and practice? Those questions are explored during Creativity Q+A LIVE\, a series of conversations with Northern Michigan artists at the Glen Arbor Arts Center. On April 23\, 1 pm Leelanau County artist Angela Saxon talks about her practice with Sarah Bearup-Neal\, GAAC gallery manager. The program is free. No reservations are required. Doors open at noon. \nSaxon is a self-described “mark maker.” That’s her calling\, and the basis of her creative practice\, which is about seeing more\, getting beyond the surface of things\, and depicting layers of time in her paintings\, prints and drawings. The materials she uses don’t define her. She moves fluidly between them\, looking for the best combination of tools and processes to interpret the local landscape’s ephemeral essence. \nCreativity Q+A LIVE is an offshoot of the GAAC’s online feature\, Creativity Q+A. Since 2020\, the GAAC has published monthly\, long-form interviews that dig into artists’ creative practices. Saxon’s conversation was published in March 2021. DESCRIPTION:All five panels from the Glen Arbor Arts Center’s 2022 Outdoor Gallery exhibition will be available for acquisition. The GAAC is holding an online auction April 25 – 27. The 5-foot square artworks are reproductions of original\, acrylic paintings by Carrie Hensel\, the Ann Arbor\, Michigan\, winner of the 2022 Outdoor Gallery competition. \nOnline bidding begins April 25\, 9 am\, and concludes on April 27\, 2 pm. Opening bids start at $600/panel minimum on these four panels: Revisit The Pines\, Birches In October\, Wintry Woods\, and Twilight On Bear Lake. Note: The opening bid for the Morning Sun On Trilliums panel begins at $500. In Summer 2022 there was an unsuccessful attempt to steal this panel\, which resulted in some surface damage: several linear scratches\, and two “dents” along the top edge of the panel. Bidding instructions and images of the panels may be found here: https://glenarborart.org/2023-outdoor-gallery-panel-auction/. \nThe panels are lightweight aluminum finished with a weather-resistant coating. They now hang on the GAAC’s exterior walls\, and may be viewed at any time.
