DESCRIPTION:Art\, wine and small plate delectables will warm the night as the Glen Arbor Art Association The Homestead\, and Leelanau Peninsula Wine Trail team up to offer Art From Michigan’s Wine Country on Friday\, February 6\, 6-8 pm.\nNow in its seventh year at The Homestead’s Mountain Flowers Lodge this fun winter event kicks off Leelanau Peninsula Wine Trails “Taste the Passion” weekend. The Friday night GAAA benefit features an art exhibit and sale of work by local artists\, wine from Leelanau wineries\, and a small plates menu designed by The Homestead’s chef. \n  \nTicket price is $25 per person with advance reservation. Entrance fee includes one glass of wine\, food stations with small plates\, and coffee. Additional wine is available for $4/glass or three glasses for $10. Call The Homestead\, 334-5100\, by February 4 to make an advanced reservation with will call ticket pick up at the event. At the door price is $30 per person the night of the event. \nThe invitational art exhibit and sale offers recent original works by Bob Ashmun\, Jane Batteiger\, Linda Alice Dewey\, Michelle Hart Jahraus\, Christine Nettleton\, Joan Richmond\, Lisa Wilkins Schulte\, and Sally E. Wille. The artists will be on hand to discuss their work. \nA portion of each ticket and painting purchase supports the Glen Arbor Art Association programming including a scholarship fund. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. \n  \nDoug Stanton is a teacher\, lecturer\, and author of the New York Times bestsellers In Harm’s Way and Horse Soldiers\, and the co-founder of the National Writers Series\, a year-round book festival held at the Opera House in downtown Traverse City. His writing has been widely published in Esquire\, The New York Times\, Time and the Washington Post. Stanton’s other notable contribution to the region’s cultural landscape is as a founding member of the Traverse City Film Festival. On Jan. 29\, Stanton will talk about his writing life and a new book in process – a profile of several young men who found themselves thrown together by the Viet Nam war. \n  \nTalk About Art is a series of conversational interviews with regional artmakers. DESCRIPTION:Come explore Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (National Lakeshore) on snowshoes this winter! Join park rangers for a guided snowshoe hike this holiday season and every Saturday throughout the winter. The first hike of the season will be on Saturday\, December 27\, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. The snowshoe hikes will continue to be offered every Saturday at 1:00 p.m. through March 7\, 2015. Meet at the National Lakeshore’s Philip A. Hart Visitor Center in Empire. If you don’t have your own snowshoes\, a pair will be loaned at no charge. Participants need only purchase the park entrance pass or have an annual pass to join in the fun. \nReservations are required whether you need to borrow snowshoes or have your own.  Ranger-led snowshoe hikes are limited to 30 participants. DESCRIPTION:Photography – a “serious hobby” for retired marine ecologist Roy Kropp – is the tool he’ll use to explore northern Michigan’s fall colors during his Sept. 28-Oct. 11artist-residency with the Glen Arbor Art Association (GAAA). Kropp talks about his two-week work-study Oct. 9\, 7:30 p.m.\, Glen Arbor Art Association\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. \n  \n“Fall in the Northwest appears very different from that in the East/Midwest\,” said Kropp\, a resident of Sequim\, Washington. The GAAA residency allowed Kropp to develop a photographic portfolio of Midwestern fall colors and patterns; and to explore the cross section between photographic art and scientific exploration. \n  \nThe GAAA’s Artist-In-Residence program provides artists with two-week residencies. Dr. Wilson will be speaking about the different kinds of wild bees found in Michigan\, comparing and contrasting them to honey bees\, and about simple strategies to support and protect bees in Michigan. DESCRIPTION:Gail Griffin\, the Glen Arbor Art Association’s (GAAA) artist-in-residence Sept. 14-27\, divides her life into parts: before her husband’s death and after. She talks about the work she’s done on a volume of prose poetry exploring this personal tragedy Sept. 25\, 7:30 p.m.\, Glen Arbor Art Association\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. \n  \nGriffin was married for four months when her husband “fell into the Manistee River and drowned.” Her GAAA residency has been a time when she could pull together a range of written materials – poetry\, essays – into book form. At her Sept. 25 presentation\, Griffin will talk about the mechanics of creating a deeply personal tale intended for publication. Griffin is a professor of English now retired from Kalamazoo College. \n  \nThe GAAA’s Artist-In-Residence program provides artists with two-week residencies. SUMMARY:New Fiber Work: Brady\, Brown + Kostyshyn
DESCRIPTION:Fiber is the focus Sept. 19-Oct. 13 at Center Gallery\, 6023 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. The gallery will showcase contemporary approaches to an old medium by three artists: Kathy Brady\, Stephen Kostyshyn and Lisa Perrine Brown. The show opens Sept. 19 with a 6 p.m. reception. \n  \nBrady\, a Williamston resident\, creates mixed media vessels in clay. She combines fiber – paper and vegetation – with her clay and hand forms the object. Brady also looks to the quilt world for design inspiration. \n  \nKostyshyn also combines clay and fiber. He throws or creates through slab work a clay base from which he weaves intricate baskets and vases. The Cedar resident uses a variety of materials in his weaving\, including rattan\, palm\, birch bark and red osier. \n  \nBrown began interpreting maps of local waterways and landforms in 2012. After enlarging the maps\, Brown translates them into woven tapestries and sewn constructions that use both new and recycled fiber materials.
