Join us by bike to get the behind-the-scenes look at secrets and unfamiliar facts about the baron of Glen Haven – D.H. Day – and the surrounding dunes area: the railroad\, the “ovens”\, alligator hill\, riparian rights\, a sawmill\, the historic Great Lakes Picnic area\, dune formations\, lumberjacks\, and Pierce Stocking and D.H. Day’s grand vision for the area. From a spectacular bird’s eye view imagine the interpreted activities of the town and water that hummed with 1800s tourists\, a fruit cannery\, and maritime activities. Good balance of stops along the way with narration while riding. and fabulous photo opportunities. \nPLEASE NOTE: Start and end in Glen Arbor (not downtown) at the Heritage Trail entrance on Forest Haven road just west of town shops. The Heritage Trailhead is just north of the Alligator Hill HIKING trailhead (on the same road)\, and south of the church parking lot. Look for our guides in reflective light green vests. Trailhead map \nBike Type: Best for road bikes\, mountain bikes\, hybrid\, e-bikes and fat tire. Not suitable for bikes with very skinny tires. \nNOTE: E-bikes allowed in the national park must be Class Type 1 pedal-assist only\, with no throttle. \nDifficulty: This is all level with the exception of one hill that many of us will walk together while still interpreting. One 300 ft. section of dirt road. \nAges: Not suitable for children under 4. Ages 4-7 must be in a trailer/carrier. Ages 8 yrs. old can be on their own bike. \nNote: Please make sure your bike is in working order for the ride. Heasley will talk about her essay-in-progress at a public presentation on August 21\, 10 am. The program is open to the public at no charge.\nDuring her residency\, Heasley will “develop a creative nonfiction environmental essay titled ‘I Remember the Bat Room’ \,” she said. The piece is the prologue for “reconsidering my grandparents’ dilapidated\, never-painted\, 1900 farm house in the 1960s and ‘70s — what its smells taught and might still teach about our relationships within more-than-human worlds; about transcendent meanings of ‘home’; about biodiversity in even humble places.”\nThe GAAC has been hosting visiting artmakers as part of its residency program since the 1990s. Join us by bike to get the behind-the-scenes look at secrets and unfamiliar facts about the baron of Glen Haven – D.H. Day – and the surrounding dunes area: the railroad\, the “ovens”\, alligator hill\, riparian rights\, a sawmill\, the historic Great Lakes Picnic area\, dune formations\, lumberjacks\, and Pierce Stocking and D.H. Day’s grand vision for the area. From a spectacular bird’s eye view imagine the interpreted activities of the town and water that hummed with 1800s tourists\, a fruit cannery\, and maritime activities. Good balance of stops along the way with narration while riding. and fabulous photo opportunities. \nPLEASE NOTE: Start and end in Glen Arbor (not downtown) at the Heritage Trail entrance on Forest Haven road just west of town shops. The Heritage Trailhead is just north of the Alligator Hill HIKING trailhead (on the same road)\, and south of the church parking lot. Look for our guides in reflective light green vests. Trailhead map \nBike Type: Best for road bikes\, mountain bikes\, hybrid\, e-bikes and fat tire. Not suitable for bikes with very skinny tires. \nNOTE: E-bikes allowed in the national park must be Class Type 1 pedal-assist only\, with no throttle. \nDifficulty: This is all level with the exception of one hill that many of us will walk together while still interpreting. And the next interview in the 2025 series is about building the history of a place\, in this case Glen Arbor Township: A History to 1920\, a new\, hardcover book edited by Andrew White; and written by Paul Dechow\, Mary Severson Tris\, Barbara Siepker\, and John Tris. The interview takes place August 24\, 11 am in the GAAC Main Gallery.\nPublished by Leelanau Press\, Glen Arbor Township surveys the geological\, social\, and human history of what became Glen Arbor Township\, a municipal designation encompassing 87.6 square miles of land and water.  Over the course of 368 pages\, and drawing on original documents\, the five collaborating writers present a picture of this place\, starting with the glacial activities that lay the groundwork for the Land of Delight; the lifeway of the original inhabitants; followed by the commercial timbering era\, fruit orchards\, Glen Arbor’s early resorts\, and the accompanying population shifts. GAAC Gallery Manager Sarah Bearup-Neal will explore the mechanics of how a group of writers build a cohesive history\, and what current day residents can glean from the past.\nCoffee With The Authors is a series of conversational interviews with local\, regional\, and state authors about the art\, craft\, and process of writing. In these interviews\, Bearup-Neal talks with writers – poets\, essayists\, memoirists\, fiction writers\, historical fiction writers\, writers of creative non-fiction – and explores how writers work and think.
