SUMMARY:Star Parties
DESCRIPTION:At the Dune Climb\, please park in the row furthest from the dunes with your headlights facing M-109. Volunteers will be assisting with parking. Drop-in telescope and information stations will be available for you to visit at your leisure. Be sure to stop by the ranger greeter table in the parking lot at the Dune Climb for more information about the stations and their locations. \nFor all evening astronomy events\, bring a flashlight for the walk back to your car and bug spray\, if needed. You are welcome to bring your own binoculars\, beach chairs\, and blankets for a more comfortable experience\, and water is always recommended for National Park Service (NPS) programs. Park rangers and GTAS staff will wear red glow pins or bracelets at the events. \nThis event is the perfect opportunity to “Find Your Park” in the stars. Starry night skies and natural darkness are important components of the special places the NPS protects. National parks hold some of the last remaining harbors of darkness and provide an excellent opportunity to experience this endangered resource. \nAll sky programs offered by the National Lakeshore are free. Participants need only purchase the park entrance pass or have an annual pass displayed in their vehicle to join in the fun. Programs will be cancelled if the sky is not visible due to weather conditions. The decision to cancel is usually made two hours in advance. Please call 231-326-4700\, ext. 5005\, for a voicemail message with the decision.

SUMMARY:IN TRANSLATION: THEATER AS MIRROR? A DISCUSSION
DESCRIPTION:In his 2000 play The Laramie Project\, playwright Moises Kauffman asked: How can theater reconstruct history? Also: How does it translate current events? Social issues? Is the theater a place of refuge from the world? Or\, a giant mirror reflecting it back? Those questions will be considered during a discussion with a Northern Michigan director\, and the artistic director of a small\, nonprofit theater company September 24\, 1 pm at the Glen Arbor Arts Center. The panel discussion is part of In Translation\, the GAAC’s multi-pronged project exploring how the arts – visual\, performing\, musical and literary – translate the contemporary world. \nTerri Heffron and Lesley Tye\, both Northern Michigan residents\, will be in conversation with GAAC Gallery Manager Sarah Bearup-Neal about their experience translating the contemporary world through theater. Heffron directed the Old Town Playhouse 2023 production of The Laramie Project\, about the reaction to the 1998 murder of gay University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard in Laramie\, Wyoming. Tye is the artistic director of Mashup Rock & Roll Musical. Mashup productions “remix popular culture not just to entertain\, but to celebrate and question the society we live in\, with stories that promote inclusion and tolerance.” \nA grant from the Michigan Humanities Council provides support for the In Translation project. It continues through October 26. For more information go to GlenArborArt.org / EXHIBITS. The program is free. No reservations are required. The GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St.

SUMMARY:Creativity Q+A LIVE with Fiber Artist Meg Staley
DESCRIPTION:How do artists think\, work\, and practice? Those questions are explored during Creativity Q+A LIVE\, a series of conversations with Northern Michigan artists at the Glen Arbor Arts Center. On September 30\, 1 pm Leelanau County artist Meg Staley talks about her practice with Sarah Bearup-Neal\, GAAC gallery manager. The program is free. No reservations are required. Doors open at noon. \nMeg Staley hand builds women’s clothing. Each piece is a composition that allows her to bring to it the myriad surface design techniques that make up her distinctive visual vocabulary. This is not\, however\, a story about fashion\, but a life-long journey that uses clothing as an expressive tool. \nCreativity Q+A LIVE is an offshoot of the GAAC’s online feature\, Creativity Q+A. Since 2020\, the GAAC has published monthly\, long-form interviews that dig into artists’ creative practices. Staley’s conversation was published in June 2022. To read it\, and all the Creativity Q+A interviews\, go to GlenArborArt.org / ARTISTS. The GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor.

SUMMARY:Walk + Talk The Exhibits
DESCRIPTION:A guided walk-and-talk through the Glen Arbor Arts Center’s new exhibit\, In Translation\, takes place September 2 and October 14\, 11 am. Sarah Bearup-Neal\, GAAC gallery manager\, leads a conversational tour of the exhibit. In Translation explores how visual artists translate the human and natural worlds\, current events\, and contemporary social issues through their art work. \nThe Walk + Talk will also include conversation about The Side Of The Road\, an exhibition of abstract landscapes by Alice Moss. These mixed media paintings are in the GAAC Lobby Gallery.\nNo one walks into a gallery and fully understands what the exhibiting artists intended to say with their work. During this one-hour program\, Bearup-Neal will talk about both exhibits’ themes; shed light on artists’ statements; and explore how artists use materials to communicate meaning; or make an idea more dynamic. Visitors will leave with a fuller understanding\, and appreciation of the exhibit. \nA grant from the Michigan Humanities Council provides support for the In Translation project. The Walk + Talk is free. The GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. For more information go to GlenArborArt.org / EVENTS.
