SUMMARY:More than Just a View: Water Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:A panel of water activists and advocates talk about how the lakes\, streams and ponds in our region are “More Than Just A View\,” on Sunday\, July 15\, 2 pm at the Glen Arbor Arts Center\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. This conversational interview will be conducted by GAAC Gallery Manager Sarah Bearup-Neal. \nThe “More Than Just A View” panel is: Jim Lively\, of the Groundwork Center; Tom Nelson\, executive Director of The Leelanau Conservancy; and environmental attorney Jim Olson\, founder of For Love Of Water/FLOW. The July 15 discussion offers an opportunity to hear more about how the health and safety of Lake Michigan is endangered by the Line 5 oil pipe\, the threats to underground aquafers from bottled water\, and the impacts of 21 st Century lawn care on local lakes and streams. \nThis conversational discussion is presented as part of the GAAC’s exhibition “New Views: Water = Life = Art.” The exhibition continues through August 4 in the GAAC gallery. There is no charge. For more information go to: GlenArborArt.org

SUMMARY:Discovery Days Pt 1 - Leelanau County Poor Farm
DESCRIPTION:Discovery Days – Leelanau County Poor Farm \nSeeking: Memories\, Photos & Stories • Life at the Leelanau County Poor Farm \nFirst Discovery Day \nKasson Township Hall\, 10988 S. Newman Rd.\, Maple City \nSaturday\, July 14 th\, 10am – noon \n  \nLooking for any memorabilia about the Leelanau County Poor Farm\, located west of Maple City on Burdickville Road\, across from Myles Kimmerly Park. Between 1900 and 1960\, this working farm housed up to 20 residents at a time who helped to operate the farm. In addition\, the farm had a managing family living there and some hired help. This farm was referred to as the County Farm by the community. \nThis is valuable local history in the process of being preserving. We are looking for any stories\, photos or items from this farm which was referred to as the County Farm by the community. You are our link to documenting this important history. If you have stories and would consider sharing we would like you to join us at Kasson Township Hall for our first Discovery Day. With your permission we would like to scan and document these photos\, take notes and/or audio record your recollections. This information then will be organized\, catalogued\, stored and made publicly available at the Leelanau Historical Society Museum as a part of the Leelanau County Poor Farm Collection. Leelanau County Historic Preservation Society is hosting this event in junction with Empire Area History Group and Leelanau Historical Museum. \nThe second Discovery Day will be held with the Coleman Family on July 28\, 2018 from 10am to 12 noon also at Kasson Township Hall. Their relatives George and Mabel (Ashmore) Coleman managed the farm from 1925 to 1960. These grandchildren have fond and detailed memories of their time spent every weekend at the farm. They look forward to sharing these stories and their family photographs that day. \nThese events have been partially funded by Michigan Humanities Council and National Humanities Endowment. \nFurther information\, or if are you unable to attend but still want to add your memories\, please contact Barbara Siepker 231-334-4395 siepker@aol.com

SUMMARY:Joseph Lombardo | Artist Reception & Exhibition

SUMMARY:Yoga on the Beach - Glen Haven 7-13
DESCRIPTION:It is time to get your yoga mat or blanket out and head to Glen Haven Beach for Yoga on the Beach! Amy Hubbell is our instructor and there is nothing as soothing as doing yoga on a pristine Lake Michigan beach. \nAmy will lead a session each Friday mornings through August 10. These sessions are held at Glen Haven Beach at 10 AM. \nYoga on the Beach classes are fun\, laid back and suitable for all levels\, even beginner yogis. All classes are 60 minutes\, and we ask for a suggested donation of $10. \n(50% of donations from classes taught at Glen Haven go to the Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes for a new Accessible Beach Deck at the Maritime Museum Beach!) \nWe recommend dressing in comfortable layers and bringing plenty of drinking water and a towel or blanket you can stretch out on. Sunscreen and bug spray are always a good idea too.  \nGlen Haven is a restored port village on Lake Michigan about 2 miles west of Glen Arbor off M109\, part of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Come down Glen Haven Road until it ends at a big red building (the old cannery)\, turn right to park in the parking lot\, then head toward the water to find us. Donations from classes here will benefit Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes\, a volunteer-driven nonprofit that helps keep our beloved national park clean\, safe and accessible. Note that classes at this location will be cancelled if the weather is too nasty for yoga. If in doubt call/text 231-866-1451

SUMMARY:Margo Burian artist reception & exhibition
DESCRIPTION:For her 11th consecutive solo show at Center Gallery in Glen Arbor\, Maple City painter Margo Burian breaks with her tradition of landscape painting\, and for the first time shows a group of mixed media abstracted paintings on panel. This exhibition of new works opens Friday\, July 6 with a 6 p.m. reception. \nBurian has traditionally worked in oil paint. In these new works\, she explores water- based media including acrylic paint\, graphite\, collage\, and image transfer. “The paintings are deeply layered and consist of multiple sessions in the studio\,” she said. “They’re derived from a combination of observation\, memory\, sketch\, and photo reference. Often times the original image becomes lost in the layering process until it becomes a separate image onto itself.” \nCenter Gallery’s show of work by Margo Burian continues through July 12. \nCenter Gallery is open daily 11 am – 5 pm. SUMMARY:Talk about Art: The Lake Michigan Mermaid
DESCRIPTION:Two Michigan poets have cast Lake Michigan as the setting for a new telling of an ancient struggle in the The Lake Michigan Mermaid. Poets Linda Nemec Foster of Grand Rapids\, and Anne-Marie Oomen of Empire created an epic poem in book form about coming of age in a troubled world. They read from their 2018 work and talk about the process of collaboratively crafting this tale on Friday\, June 15 at the Glen Arbor Arts Center\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. This author reading and interview begins at 7 pm. \nAccompanied by Meridith Ridl’s illustrations\, The Lake Michigan Mermaid explores family relationships and generational bonds. The book was crafted over a decade of back-and- forth emails between Foster and Oomen\, of their drafts poems and ideas. GAAC Gallery Manager Sarah Bearup-Neal will talk with the poets about this process. The Lake Michigan Mermaid reading is offered at no charge as part of the GAAC’s exhibition “New Views: Water = Life = Art\,” which continues through August 4 in the GAAC gallery.
