DESCRIPTION:The Traverse City Dance Project’s 2025 summer season features a four-stop tour of FREE performances across Northern Michigan! The program boasts an impressive lineup of professional dancers from around the country and showcases new dance works by Resident Choreographer Jennifer McQuiston Lott and recent Juilliard graduate Julia Ciesielska\, in collaboration with live cellist Kyle Stachnik. The second half of the program will spotlight choreography by Artistic Director Brent Whitney\, set to the iconic music of Queen. Pre-show tunes by DJ Eric P! The summer season concludes with Gala in the Gardens\, a magical evening supporting the future growth of the Traverse City Dance Project.  \nNote: All of the shows\, except for Frankfort\, are outdoors. Bring your own chair/blanket for the Charlevoix and Traverse City performances\, as seating will not be provided. Each kit contains supplies and instructions\, including standing easels\, canvases\, paints\, brushes\, and painters palettes. Young artists can paint on GAAC grounds or borrow the kits for up to four days to take on outdoor adventures.\n“We’re excited to introduce children to the world of plein air painting with free art kits designed just for them\,” said Kristie McCaw\, Program Manager at the Glen Arbor Arts Center. “It’s a chance to spark their creativity\, connect with nature\, and experience the joy of making art in the open air\, all while exploring the beauty of our region.”\nMeet a Plein Air Artist Day | Saturday\, July 12\nProfessional plein air painters will be on site at GAAC from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for demonstrations\, technique tips\, and hands-on guidance. A rain date is set for Sunday\, July 13.\n“After decades in the classroom\, I’ve seen how quickly young minds spark when they watch creativity unfold in real time\,” said Mark Mehaffey\, former teacher and featured plein air painter. “The artists will guide kids\, inviting them to pick up a brush and experience the joy of capturing the world around them.”\nYouth Plein Air Exhibit | July 28 to July 31\nEach participant will have the opportunity to display one completed painting in GAAC’s classroom gallery. The second half of the program will spotlight choreography by Artistic Director Brent Whitney\, set to the iconic music of Queen. Pre-show tunes by DJ Eric P! The summer season concludes with Gala in the Gardens\, a magical evening supporting the future growth of the Traverse City Dance Project.  \nNote: All of the shows\, except for Frankfort\, are outdoors. Bring your own chair/blanket for the Charlevoix and Traverse City performances\, as seating will not be provided. Join us by bike to get the behind-the-scenes look at secrets and unfamiliar facts about the baron of Glen Haven – D.H. Day – and the surrounding dunes area: the railroad\, the “ovens”\, alligator hill\, riparian rights\, a sawmill\, the historic Great Lakes Picnic area\, dune formations\, lumberjacks\, and Pierce Stocking and D.H. Day’s grand vision for the area. From a spectacular bird’s eye view imagine the interpreted activities of the town and water that hummed with 1800s tourists\, a fruit cannery\, and maritime activities. Good balance of stops along the way with narration while riding. and fabulous photo opportunities. \nPLEASE NOTE: Start and end in Glen Arbor (not downtown) at the Heritage Trail entrance on Forest Haven road just west of town shops. The Heritage Trailhead is just north of the Alligator Hill HIKING trailhead (on the same road)\, and south of the church parking lot. Look for our guides in reflective light green vests. Trailhead map \nBike Type: Best for road bikes\, mountain bikes\, hybrid\, e-bikes and fat tire. Not suitable for bikes with very skinny tires. \nNOTE: E-bikes allowed in the national park must be Class Type 1 pedal-assist only\, with no throttle. \nDifficulty: This is all level with the exception of one hill that many of us will walk together while still interpreting. One 300 ft. section of dirt road. \nAges: Not suitable for children under 4. Ages 4-7 must be in a trailer/carrier. Ages 8 yrs. old can be on their own bike. \nNote: Please make sure your bike is in working order for the ride. DESCRIPTION:The 13th Annual Port Oneida Run will take place on Saturday\, August 2\, 2025\, an event of the nonprofit park partner Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear. The run starts and ends at the big red barn and lawn area at the Olsen Farm/Port Oneida Farms Heritage Center\, 3164 W. Harbor Hwy\, (M-22) Maple City\, MI\, just 4 miles north of Glen Arbor. \nRegistrants have the option of one of three spectacular courses: Homesteaders Hilly Half Marathon\, a new course this year that goes up past Pyramid Point trailhead and down to Bohemian Road; Tiller’s 10K combines trail running\, gravel back roads\, and pavement; and Heritage Flat and Fast 5K\, a popular route running out and back on the Heritage Trail and Basch Road in Port Oneida. Strollers and leashed dogs are welcome on the 5K.
