DESCRIPTION:Suttons Bay artist Neil Walling continues his love affair with Leelanau County in a new group of watercolor and oil paintings starting July 29 at Center Gallery\, 6023 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. \n  \nWalling’s life-long affection for the region has moved him to study many of the familiar Leelanau County scenes in search of something fresh to depict. “There are a great many scenes in the county\, but I always look for something unexpected or overlooked by the casual observer\,” he said. “Fish Town is a good example. It has been painted by many fine artists\, so my goal is to see it from a new perspective.” Walling works paints in one sitting\, en plein air\, which is an immediate\, time-sensitive approach to outdoor painting. \n  \nAs part of his exhibition\, Walling will conduct a painting demonstration on Saturday\, July 30\, 1 p.m. at the gallery. \n  \nThe show runs through Aug. 4. SUMMARY:Music on the Mountain - Levi Britton
DESCRIPTION:Levi Britton is an indie/folk/rock artist who hails from Traverse City\, MI.  Growing up around music sparked his drive to make it his profession. At age 20 Levi moved to Chicago\, playing down in the subways\, Potbelly restaurants\, and any gig he could find.  Eventually Britton co-founded his band\, Down the Line that went on to release 5 albums\, and toured the country for ten years with artists such as The Gin Blossoms\, Pat Benatar\, Peter Frampton\, America\, Keith Anderson\, Lighthouse\, and others. \nIn 2011\, Levi and DTL band mate Dan Myers formed Stolen Silver\, releasing two albums—most recently in June 2014.  Stolen Silver has recently been touring with actor Gary Sinise and The Lieutenant Dan Band\, playing stadiums and military bases in support of U.S. troops and their families. \nIn addition to playing with Stolen Silver\, 2014 launched Levi’s solo career at a whole new level.  After years of fans clamoring for a solo project\, Levi hit the studio to record all new\, original music.  His first solo record\, “Inside” is set to be released in mid-2015. \nTickets are $15 in advance\, $20 at the door \nTo purchase tickets\, call 231.334.5100 or visit mynorthtickets.com

They are on their honor to paint only two hours.

DESCRIPTION:Grand Rapids artist Jeff Condon opens up his mental file of images — collected over a lifetime living in the city and country — and returns to Center Gallery with an exhibition of contemporary landscapes. This show opens Aug. 12 with a 6 p.m. reception\, and runs through Aug. 18. Center Gallery is located at 6023 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. \n  \nCondon’s approach to landscape painting takes a fresh\, original twist. He abstracts the perspective by flattening farmhouses and fields\, and paints in a range of unexpected\, vibrant colors not found in the natural world he venerates. The student will learn different systems of government based in those concepts. They will gain a foundational understanding of the difference between power and control relating to various systems of government. SUMMARY:Music on the Mountain - Crossroads Band
DESCRIPTION:Crossroads is an all family band that performs jazz\, funk\, and contemporary music. DESCRIPTION:Linda Beeman\, an Owosso\, Michigan\, resident specializing in Japanese woodblock printing\, exhibits prints of Northern Michigan’s landscape and lakeshores\, Aug. 19-Sept. 1 at Center Gallery\, 6023 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. The show opens Aug. 19\, 6 p.m. with a reception for the artist. \n  \nBeeman practices a time-consuming art with ancient roots in Japan. She is one of two professional artists in Michigan practicing mokuhanga\, a multi-step process using handcarved printing plates. Beeman prepared for her Center Gallery exhibition by immersing herself in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore\, sketching\, painting and photographing imagery to translate into carved wood blocks from which a limited edition prints are made. SUMMARY:Star Party at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore
DESCRIPTION:The sky is the limit at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (National Lakeshore).  Explore the Milky Way\, Mars\, and Saturn with park rangers and astronomers in the Dune Climb parking lot on Saturday\, September 3 from 9:00 to 11:00 p.m. Experience the late summer night sky in near total darkness. \nDuring the event\, Grand Traverse Astronomical Society (GTAS) astronomer Bob Moler will be presenting a talk on the topic of “100 Years of Recognizing and Studying the Andromeda Nebula as a Galaxy.”  The talk will begin at 9:05 p.m.\, just after the 9:00 p.m. welcome\, and will last about 15 minutes. Visitors are asked to park in the row farthest from the dunes\, with headlights facing M-109. \nThe event will be cancelled if the stars are not visible due to cloudy weather conditions. The decision to cancel will be made two hours in advance of the event; please call 231-326-4700\, ext. 5005\, for a voicemail message with the decision. \nAll sky programs offered by the National Lakeshore are free. Participants need only purchase the Park Entrance Pass or have an Annual Pass displayed in their vehicle to join in the fun. Passes may be purchased at the Philip A. Hart Visitor Center in Empire and cost $15 per vehicle for seven days. \nVisitors are encouraged to bring a flashlight for the walk back to their cars\, and should bring bug spray if desired. Visitors may also want to bring binoculars\, beach chairs\, blankets and water.

DESCRIPTION:Traverse City artist Lisa Flahive paints the immediacy of local streets\, beaches\, cafes and jazz clubs. Her view of these diverse worlds will be on display at Center Gallery\, 6023 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor\, Sept. 2-15. A reception opens the exhibition on Sept. 2\, 6-8 p.m. \nWorking in a range of water-based paints\, Flahive immerses herself in the location she’s painting. Working quickly\, she captures a place’s energy\, the people moving through it\, the music coming out of it. She is artist-in-residence for Chateau Chantel Winery in Traverse City\, and paints live on the bandstand each week. Flahive also paints and teaches sketching in Chicago. \nAs part of her exhibition\, Flahive will conduct a painting demonstration at Center Gallery on Saturday\, Sept. 10\, 1 p.m. The event is open to the public.
