SUMMARY:Mostly Music presents “The Big Bands Never Left…the Audience Went Somewhere Else”
DESCRIPTION:Get behind the scenes with the “Mostly Music” series continuing in January 2017. The “Mostly Music” series is a winter extension of the Manitou Music Festival. “Mostly Music” is hosted by Bob Foskett\, who programmed jazz radio in Chicago for 30 years and is now a DJ for Friday Morning Jazz at WNMC in Traverse City. Programs will be roughly 60% music\, 40% discussion. There are programs in January\, February\, and March and if you enjoy watching and listening to live music\, “Mostly Music” provides an opportunity to get some “behind-the-scenes” information too. Plus it’s another way to escape cabin fever in the throes of winter. \n  \nThe first session of Mostly Music’s winter series is a lecture with recorded examples of the continuing metamorphosis of the jazz big band in American music.  As American tastes in popular music changed in the 1950’s\, the big bands\, which were considered the core of American popular and dance music until then\, seemed to be on their way to extinction. \nHowever\, creative musicians and changes in music education not only revived the big band concept\, but nurtured it to the point that today there are more big bands playing jazz than during the heydays of the 30’s and 40’s….by at least a thousand fold!  GAAA’s resident jazz nut Bob Foskett will trace and explain that development.

DESCRIPTION:In the TALK ABOUT ART ® series\, our host conducts live interviews with local and regional artists about their art making and thinking. These insightful interviews take place monthly\, January-May\, at no charge. Our current host\, Norm Wheeler\, recently retired from teaching Science and English for 32 years at the Leelanau School. He is the Director of the Lanphier Observatory\, hosting public stargazing two nights a week in summer on Sleeping Bear Bay. The co-founder and continuing host of the Beach Bards Bonfire\, a gathering for by heart poetry\, storytelling\, and music on Friday nights in high summer at the Leelanau School Beach. He also helped Crispin Campbell\, Ben Bricker\, and Tom Fordyce build the first stage behind the Lake St. Studio for the first season of the Manitou Music Festival many years ago. Admission is Free. \nKaz McCue has spent the past twenty-five years working in the arts as a visual artist\, educator\, curator\, and arts administrator. He holds a BFA in photography from Parson’s School of Design and an MFA in mixed media from Long Island University/ C.W. Post Campus. Kaz has received numerous grants and awards and has exhibited his work nationally and internationally. As a curator\, he has put together over 200 exhibitions and over 100 lectures and artist presentations. Kaz has taught at numerous universities\, colleges and academies and has served in several arts administration positions. \nAs a professional\, Kaz has dedicated his life to the arts. His enthusiasm and dedication has helped to define his career and his belief in the power of the arts has driven his commitment to participating in the process of the arts and mentoring young artists. Kaz is currently an Instructor of Visual Arts at the Leelanau School in Glen Arbor and he also serves as the Artistic Director at Michigan Legacy Art Park.

A Southern Italian tradition\, the menu consists of fish and pasta with a fasting from meat for the Roman Catholic holiday. The numerology represents the seven sacraments and seven days of creation. SUMMARY:Sleeping Bear Dunes Centennial Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Rangers and staff at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore will be presenting short films from a number of National Park Service sites December 17th at 12:00pm. This two day film festival will be the final event in our centennial celebration of the National Park Service. \nThe National Park Service will be finishing out the 2016 centennial year with 413 individual park sites. These sites encompass some of the most beautiful and important natural\, cultural and historical resources in the United States. Explore some of these treasured places in a series of National Park Service Films\, each film a reflection of a different national park or national heritage location from around the country. The festival will be held December 17th at the Phillip A. Hart Visitor Center in Empire\, MI\, starting at 12:00 pm and lasting approximately 2 ½ hours. There is no charge for this program and visitors are welcome to watch as many or few films as they like.

DESCRIPTION:Local chamber ensemble Manitou Winds will present an encore performance of their annual Winter Songs & Carols concert on Friday\, December 9\, at 7:30 p.m. As part of the Glen Arbor Art Association’s Manitou Music Festival\, the concert will be held at The Leelanau School in Glen Arbor. Admission is also free\, and a freewill offering will be collected to benefit music and art programs at The Leelanau School. \nSongs of Advent\, winter solstice\, and Christmas will intertwine with poetry and prose\, setting a reflective mood to kick off the holiday season. Five musicians\, nine different instruments will create a colorful collage of musical textures and styles. Two guest vocalists— Christy Burich and Emily Curtin Culler—will join the ensemble for five of the songs. \nIn their final collaboration for the year\, Frankfort artist Ellie Harold will partner with the ensemble. Ellie will display a special exhibition of works inspired by the concert theme at the concert venue.

Will Henry’s love for his family be mended\, or will an angel win out? \nThe cast has Brian Iler as the angel\, Dudley\, Pete LaPlaca as the bishop Jean Jenkins\, as the bishop’s wife\, Karen Ford as Madame Professor and Matilda. Back then The Holograms had believed in their cutting-edge sound. However\, the music industry remained indifferent\, and eventually the band split up\, each going their own way. Alain is overcome by nostalgia\, and is tempted to track down the members of the group. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Inaugural pet family friendly Pumpkin Fest on October 22nd from 1-6pm!\nThis celebration of fall will take place downtown Glen Arbor all afternoon\, giving participants time to carve their artistic creations\, enjoy family friendly activities and contests\, followed by a Pumpkin lighting at dusk and a community Dinner. \nFrom 1-6pm Pumpkins will be provided to carve your masterpieces ~ Free and Open to Children of all ages 🙂 Pumpkins will be placed along M22 and there will be a Grand Lighting at 6:30. \nThe fun begins with a Costume Parade for Kids and Pets at 1:30pm. From 2 to 5 There will be live music performed by Jack Pine. There will be lots of  fun\, family-friendly activities such as face painting by The Painted Lady from 2-4pm\, games & prizes at 2\, and again at 4\, with a pie eating contest at 3pm. The pumpkins will be lit just before sunset at 6:30pm for the event grand finale. Need refreshments?  There will be a  Beer Garden outside  Art’s Tavern. \nWhile you’re in town\, make sure to shop at our small businesses and eat at the local establishments. Also happening the same day at Anderson’s Market in Glen Arbor is their annual Harvest Fest\, right on site. With food and wine tastings\, face painting and a brat cookout\, there’s plenty of reasons to be in Glen Arbor October 22nd! \nPumpkin Carving is FREE to participate ~ Open to kids of all ages. Donations Accepted.
