DESCRIPTION:June 23-25  Thurs-Sat.   Kraitz Cabin Volunteer preservation project 9 am – 4 pm This is the oldest structure on the mainland in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.  The replacement of deteriorated logs will have been completed by our log restoration contractor. In this project\, volunteers will re-build the roof and loft floor and clean up around the cabin. Come for as many days or hours as you are able. Construction skills helpful. Wear close-toed shoes\, bring a lunch and water. M-22 to Bohemian rd. south on left.

SUMMARY:Barn Restoration Workshop | June 13-18\, 2016
DESCRIPTION:Barn Restoration Workshop – June 13-18\nThe park will again be hosting our barn restoration workshop June 13-18th at the John Burfiend Barn located on Port Oneida Road\, four (4) miles north of Glen Arbor\, Michigan on M-22.   This year marks the 20th year of the partnership between the Michigan Barn Preservation Network and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in developing this series of “hands-on” workshops.  The park and the Michigan Barn Preservation Network are providing the skilled labor to put on this workshop.\n \nThe workshop will address repairing “Barn Floors and Hewn Building Sills and Floor Joists”.  The John Burfiend Barn was the site of the first park and Michigan Barn Preservation Network workshop in 1997.  The course will include 1) basics about structural and load analysis for floors and sills\, 2) repair of rough sawn floor boards\, floor joist and\, 3) repair and installation of hewn sills\, 4) exterior siding repair\, and 5) tool safety while completing the task presented.  This workshop is again able to provide a unique experience for all participants.\n \nThe course is set up so participants receive “hands on” training of all techniques.  The workshop begins on site at 9:00 a.m. each day.  There is no cost to participants. Tools and materials will be provided.  Participants should wear boots\, gloves\, and bring a sack lunch for each day that they attend.  Participants can sign up for any number of days.\n \nWorkers are not required to be skilled in the building trades\, though experience will be helpful and appreciated.  The purpose of the workshop is to teach the techniques and train owners and those interested how to do restoration work on timber and frame structures\, including concrete and stonework.  Past workshop attendees have ranged in age from 7 to 75 with each contributing their own unique skills to the project.\n \nCampsites will be provided for those volunteers who wish to camp for those days they are signed up for the workshop.  Please indicate on the form\, by email\, or when you call to sign up. \n \nInterested parties should contact the park historical architect\, Kimberly Mann (231)326-4771\, to sign up for the workshop.  To sign up by email:  kimberly_mann@nps.gov

An artist’s reception opens the show at 6 p.m. Awards will be presented at 7 p.m. \nThe juried exhibition – created in response to the Aug. 2\, 2015 wind and hail storm – interprets\, rather than documents\, the storm. Underlining New Views is the philosophy that artmaking offers a way to address difficult events\, and provides an avenue for transformation and hope. \nNew Views continues through June 23. DESCRIPTION:Center Gallery opens its 2016 season May 27 with a month-long exhibition of hand-formed porcelain clay tableware by Darcy Bowden and textile constructions by Sarah Bearup-Neal. An artists’ reception is May 27\, 6-8 p.m. at the gallery\, 6023 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. \n  \nBowden’s plates\, bowls and other table objects make the service of food an artful act. They’re simple\, modern and embellished with familiar shapes in happy\, lively colors. Bowden hand forms her objects using an anvil and paddle. A resident of Ypsilanti\, Bowden taught art for 30 years\, retiring from the Ann Arbor Public Schools in 2008. \n  \nBearup-Neal’s banners and small fabric constructions strike a modern temperament. The Empire artist’s work references many familiar quiltmaking themes and techniques\, then translates these time-honored characteristics into contemporary compositions that showcase stitchery\, mark-making\, hand-painted and hand-printed materials\, graphic line and shape\, storytelling and strong color play. \n  \nThis exhibition runs through June 30. Painter Robert Ross is the first presenter\, one of four artists who will participate in GAAA’s 2016 Artist-in-Residence (AIR) program. \n  \nDuring this two-week residency\, Ross\, a resident of Altamonte Springs\, Florida\, will create a series of paintings that explore abandoned Port Oneida farmsteads. He’ll focus on the Burfiend and Thoreson farms\, examining how the homes\, barns and shed built by these settlers shaped the environment and continue to shape it.
