SUMMARY:The New Collectors: Modern Women\, Modern Art\, Modern Museums
DESCRIPTION:In 1913\, the Armory Show introduced Avant garde art to a mostly unsuspecting public. The works were panned and banned.  A new breed of women patrons\, however\, embraced this new direction in art and began collecting in earnest.  The American public would become the benefactors of their collections. \nJoin museum educator\, Linda Young\, Wednesday\, November 4 from 2- 3:30 pm at the GAAA\, as she continues her focus on women collectors and the museums that would benefit from their discerning eyes. Baltimore sisters Etta and Claribel Cone amassed an impressive collection of paintings by Matisse and Picasso. New York socialite Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney encouraged emerging American artists\, eventually opening her own museum of contemporary art. And a trio of progressive women patrons led the effort to open New York’s Museum of Modern Art. \nPlease call the Glen Arbor Art Association at 231-334-6112 or visit our website at glenarborart.org to register for this lecture. Pre-registration is required.

SUMMARY:Sculpture: Architecture\, Artifact and Totem
DESCRIPTION:Sculpture – architectural and totemic – comes to Center Gallery for an extended stay. The work of artists Larry Fox and Van Wilson is on display Sept. 18-Oct. 11. A 6 p.m. reception for the artists opens the show. \n  \nFox constructs non-representational wall compositions from wood and canvas. The Omena artist is known locally and nationally for the dimensional\, dynamic shapes he constructs\, and for the complex surfaces he creates from layers of acrylic paint. Fox’s work is found in private collections as well as on the walls of corporate enterprises. \n  \nWilson’s freestanding\, totemic sculptures are carved from wood or assembled from metal and other found objects. The Maple City artist grew up in West Texas and brought with him a love of crows\, the traditional messengers of the spirit world. Wilson takes a playful approach to creating his totems\, mixing and matching and stacking shapes and creatures that he has painted in eye-popping colors. \n  \nFor more information\, please call Center Gallery\, 231/334-3179.

SUMMARY:Dune Dash
DESCRIPTION:Dune Dash – Saturday\, August 15 \nWant to help\, but don’t want to run/walk at the Dune Dash? No Problem –\nWe need volunteers to help at registration and as route marshals. Here is the contact info if you can help out: www.dunedash.com\, or contact TART Trails at info@traversetrails.org or 231-941-4300. \nTraverse Area Recreation and Transportation Trails (TART)\, Inc. is a proud partner of the 4th annual Dune Dash\, a 4-mile run/walk along the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail (SBHT)\, to be held at 9 a.m. this Saturday\, August 15\, 2015 at the Sleeping Bear Dune Climb. The course showcases the trail\, which opened during summer of 2012 within the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. \nThe Dune Dash is organized by the creators of the Zombie Run\, with support from the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and TART Trails. According to Matt Ross\, the founder and coordinator of the event\, “If you are not familiar with the SBHT\, participating in the Dune Dash is the perfect time to experience and support the trail.”   \nThe event is on as scheduled despite last Sunday’s storm which knocked down hundreds of trees and rendered the trail impassable. The Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes volunteer crews have been working with National Parks Service all week to clear the trail. The run/walk starts and finishes at the Dune Climb and follows the flat paved trail\, passing by rolling sand dunes and scenic forest before turning around near Glen Haven. The only stretch of the SBHT that remains closed is between Glen Haven and Glen Arbor which will not affect the event. \nAll registered participants will receive a t-shirt\, professionally timed results\, and refreshments. Awards will be given to the top three male and female finishers\, and age-group winners. Packet pick up and late registration will be held on Friday\, August 14th from 5pm-7pm at the Filling Station Microbrewery in Traverse City. There will be no day of registration (In accordance to federal law\, day of registration cannot take place within the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lake Shore.) Registration ranges from $15-30 per person based on age and prices go up $5 after Thursday\, August 13th. \nProceeds from the event support the continued development of the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail. The event has raised $7\,500 to date for trail support. For more information on the Dune Dash visit www.dunedash.com\, or contact TART Trails at info@traversetrails.org or 231-941-4300
