They will present dozens of free performances in Glen Arbor throughout the month of June. The Sound Garden Quintet will be hosted by the GAAC’s community partner\, Pine Street Studios. \nSound Garden Musician-in-Residence schedule of free performances is: \nSunrise and Sunset Sounds: From June 1 – 23\, the Sound Garden Quintet will serenade a different live performance each day at 9 am and 9:30 pm in the Glen Arbor Arts Center lot. \nOpen Rehearsals: Bring a lawn chair\, a book\, and your favorite beverage to the Glen Arbor Arts Center parking lot and enjoy a performance from the deck of Pine Street Studios\, next to the GAAC\, 5710 N. Pine St.\, Glen Arbor. In the case of inclement weather\, the rehearsal will be moved indoors. My favorite part about being a Friends volunteer is helping to preserve the National Lakeshore while doing my favorite outdoor activities.” \nThe Friends will also have books for sale to enhance your park experience. SUMMARY:Artist in Residence - Rosalie Sanara Petrouske
DESCRIPTION:The geography and geology of the Sleeping Bear Dunes will be the focus of writer Rosalie Sanara Petrouske’s work during her May 15 – 28 artist residency with the Glen Arbor Arts Center. Petrouske\, a resident of Grand Ledge\, Michigan\, will spend two weeks working on a series of haiku poems inspired by the area’s lakes and the dunes.\nEach of the GAAC’s artist-residents offer a conversational presentation at the end of their stay. The presentations begin at noon at the GAAC. They are free\, and open to the public. On May 27 Petrouske will discuss poems written in both traditional and modern haiku forms – an ancient\, Japanese poetic form concerned with the natural world — and the poems she is editing for a volume of poems.\nSince the 1990s\, the GAAC has welcomed visiting artists who want to immerse themselves in their work. The GAAC’s AIR program offers up to seven\, creative practitioners a two-week respite from their daily lives in order to focus on a new idea that needs space\, or to develop an on-going project. SUMMARY:Memorial Ceremony at Glen Arbor Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:The 3rd annual Memorial Ceremony at the historic Glen Arbor Cemetery\, which we are in the midst of renovating\, kicks off Memorial Day weekend at 10:00 a.m. sharp on Friday\, May 27th. This year\, we honor Civil War veteran Daniel Parker with a presentation by members of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. \nNorm Wheeler will play taps\, and there’s a possibility that the Glen Lake eighth graders will share a little research on the people who were buried there. All that will be packed into about a half hour. Plan to stand\, although we will have about a dozen chairs and the track chair\, for those who need help getting to the site. \nThe entrance path to the cemetery is located on Forest Haven Road\, precisely 4/10 of a mile south of M-109 right next to the very last house on the east side of the street. Allow 15 minutes to walk in and find a spot. Please do not block any driveways when you park. Dress for ticks and mosquitoes.

DESCRIPTION:May 20th\, 21st and 22nd is Glen Arbor’s newest “spend local” campaign designed to “kick off the season.” \nAll are invited to “step up to the plate” and “take a swing” during Glen Arbor’s Season Opener. Event “Batter Cards” will be available at M22 Glen Arbor and Cottonseed Apparel. Take your card around town and “run the bases” while supporting local businesses and seeing what’s new and open for the season. Stop by any six participating businesses in the area to see if you can score a home run! Purchases are encouraged but not required. 1st\, 2nd and 3rd place winners will be selected to receive “Glen Arbor Bucks.”  \nHow it works: \nThe event will take place at your leisure on May 20th\, 21st and 22nd. Participants are to pick up their batter card at M22 Glen Arbor or Cottonseed. The card has six spaces (or bases) to get stamped. As you spend the weekend in Glen Arbor\, ask local businesses to stamp your card. Purchases are encouraged but not required during this “shop small\, eat local” campaign. Once all six bases have been stamped\, participants should drop off their completed batter card to M22 Glen Arbor or Cottonseed.
