SUMMARY:Talk about Art: The Lake Michigan Mermaid
DESCRIPTION:Two Michigan poets have cast Lake Michigan as the setting for a new telling of an ancient struggle in the The Lake Michigan Mermaid. Poets Linda Nemec Foster of Grand Rapids\, and Anne-Marie Oomen of Empire created an epic poem in book form about coming of age in a troubled world. They read from their 2018 work and talk about the process of collaboratively crafting this tale on Friday\, June 15 at the Glen Arbor Arts Center\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. This author reading and interview begins at 7 pm. \nAccompanied by Meridith Ridl’s illustrations\, The Lake Michigan Mermaid explores family relationships and generational bonds. The book was crafted over a decade of back-and- forth emails between Foster and Oomen\, of their drafts poems and ideas. GAAC Gallery Manager Sarah Bearup-Neal will talk with the poets about this process. The Lake Michigan Mermaid reading is offered at no charge as part of the GAAC’s exhibition “New Views: Water = Life = Art\,” which continues through August 4 in the GAAC gallery. SUMMARY:GAAC Artist Reception\, New Views: Water
DESCRIPTION:Water surrounds us in Northern Michigan. And the Glen Arbor Arts Center looks to the Big Lake\, the streams\, wetlands and ponds for a “New View: Water = Life = Art\,” an exhibition\nrunning June 1 – August 4 in the GAAC gallery\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor.  \nAn artist’s reception to open “New Views: Water” is Saturday\, June 9\, 6 – 8 pm. The public is welcome. \nNew Views: Water is a juried exhibition of 2-D and 3-D work that offers an interpretative exploration of the many ways in which we intersect with water: ecologically\, economically\, creatively\, through the lens of tourism\, as a contributor to regional identity\, and the basis for a dynamic and enduring creation myth symbolized by a mother bear and her cubs.  In addition to the exhibition\, New Views: Water offers a full complement of programs that approach the exhibition’s theme from a range of different directions. \nFor more information go to the GAAC website\, www.glenarborart.org\, or call 231/334-6112.

SUMMARY:Center Gallery Artist Reception: Barbara Cochran and Margie Guyot
DESCRIPTION:Center Gallery hosts an artists’ reception to open its first exhibition of the 2018 season on Friday\, May 25\, 6-8 p.m. at the gallery: 6023 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. A celebration of the region’s rural life — as seen by painters Barbara Cochran and Margie Guyot — launches Center Gallery’s 2018 season. \nCochran lives on a Leelanau County cider apple farm. Her oil paintings reflect the view outside her studio window\, and celebrate the pastoral beauty of her home county. Although the region is best known for its beaches and lakes\, Cochran chooses to zero in on farmstead life — from its fruits and vegetables to its farmyard creatures. \nGuyot is well known for her atmospheric depictions of farms and fields found along the iconic backroads in Antrim Country\, her home base. She also works in oil\, and paints en plein air\, a technique that challenges the painter to record scenes quickly and on the spot. Center Gallery’s opening exhibition continues through June 28. SUMMARY:Talk about Art: "Forest Flowers" "In Bloom"

SUMMARY:Talk about Art - In Bloom
DESCRIPTION:Flowers are one of the most enduring and beloved subjects in the painting world\, but what’s their attraction? As part of the Glen Arbor Arts Center’s “In Bloom” exhibition\, two local painters who have created large bodies of work based on flowers will explore the attractions at the next “Talk About Art.\,” Sunday April 15\, 2 pm at the GAAC\, 6031 S. Spaulding draws inspiration from her large\, home flower garden. For this painter\, flowers provide a ready subject and a chance to explore the wide range of color and shape they naturally offer. \n“Talk About Art” is free and open to the public. \n“In Bloom\,” an exhibition of floral paintings and sculpture\, continues through May 17. The GAAC is open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.\, and noon – 4 p.m. on Sundays. For more information\, please call (231)334-6112
