SUMMARY:BYO brown bag lecture: History of Color in Painting
DESCRIPTION:A Short History of Color in Painting\nWednesday\, February 12 | Noon\n \nArt educator Linda Young traces how artists have used color — from the luscious pigments used by 16th century Renaissance artists to the color-drenched canvasses of the 1960s Color Field painters – on Wednesday\, February 12 at the Glen Arbor Arts Center\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. “A Short History of Color in Painting” is a BYO brown bag lecture\, and begins at noon. Coffee and cookies will be provided.\n \nYoung’s talk takes a look at the use of light and color by the Impressionists and Post Impressionists\, the importance of black to the Realists\, radical use of color by the Fauves\, and the energy-charged canvasses of the Futurists and Abstract Expressionists. It is offered as part of the GAAC exhibition COLOR. Young\, a Leelanau County resident\, was the Director of Museum Education at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts for 20 years.\n \nTickets for this event are $10 GAAC member\, $15 nonmembers. They may be reserved on-line at GlenArborArt.org/LECTURES; or call 231/334-6112. COLOR is on display January 10 – March 26.

It will be a leisurely exploration through the National Lakeshore’s cool spots. \nThe “Snowshoe Trek” will be slightly faster-paced and the terrain might be a little more rugged. There will still be interpretive stops along the hike to discover the park’s resources. Both of these hikes will involve exploration and adventure.

SUMMARY:Ranger-led Snowshoe Hikes
DESCRIPTION:Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is planning something new this winter for their free ranger-led snowshoe hikes! Whether you are an experienced snowshoer or have never tried snowshoeing\, the National Lakeshore invites you to join a ranger-led snowshoe hike to explore the park. \nThere will be two hikes each Saturday\, one for beginners called the “Snowshoe Saunter” and one for more experienced snowshoe hikers called the “Snowshoe Trek.” Each hike starts at 1:00 p.m. with an introduction at the Philip A. Hart Visitor Center in Empire. These Saturday snowshoe hikes begin on January 4 and continue each Saturday through March 14. Reservations are required. Please call 231-326-4700\, extension 5010\, for details and to make reservations. When making your reservation\, be sure to specify if you would like to join the “Snowshoe Saunter” or “Snowshoe Trek.” \nIf there is not enough snow\, winter hikes will be offered. Snowshoes will be loaned at no charge to participants that do not have their own. The National Lakeshore has traditional and modern snowshoes available. These hikes are free\, but participants do need a park entrance pass or have an annual pass to join in the fun. Reservations are required whether participants borrow snowshoes from the National Lakeshore or have their own. To cancel a reservation\, please call the National Lakeshore so visitors on the waiting list can be contacted to participate in the hike. Snowshoe hikes are fun for all ages. Inside the visitor center\, rangers will first provide an introduction and basic snowshoeing instructions\, and then everyone will travel by car to the trailhead or area of the National Lakeshore pre-selected for that day. \nOnce there\, the ranger will help participants learn about the park’s unique features and winter’s effect on them by exploring and discovering clues on site. Be prepared and plan to be outside for about two hours. Dress in layers and wear waterproof boots to be most comfortable. Not only is snowshoeing easy\, fun\, and good exercise\, it is also an activity that can be enjoyed by all ages. The ranger-led hikes are mildly strenuous\, yet they proceed at a leisurely pace for one and a half miles at the most. \nThe “Snowshoe Saunter” will allow for more time to put on the snowshoes and to practice using them\, and will go at a slow pace with multiple stops along the way.

SUMMARY:CANCELLED: Manitou Music: Dune Climb Concert
DESCRIPTION:Due to the coronavirus\, this concert has been cancelled but please check the GAAC’s Facebook page for pop up music events and more updates on their website: https://glenarborart.org/events-page/music-and-concerts/ \n\nIgor and the Red Elvises bring Siberian surf rock to the annual Manitou Music Dune Climb Concert. This concert is free but a Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore pass is required for entry into the Dune Climb. \nLead Elvis Igor Yuzov grew up in the former Soviet Union\, where folk music was the norm and rock ’n roll was illegal. A rebellious streak\, however\, led him to seek out the forbidden music. In 1995\, Yuzov dreamed that Elvis Presley came to him and told him to start playing rock ’n roll and the Red Elvises were born. Evolving over the years\, Yuzov’s music contains humorous lyrics and grooves that forces his audience to dance. \nManitou Music is a project of the Glen Arbor Arts Center. For more information\, please call 231/334-6112
