SUMMARY:Virtual Glen Arbor Holiday Marketplace 2020
DESCRIPTION:This year\, the well attended and anticipated Glen Arbor Holiday Marketplace has gone virtual. Like many events this season being cancelled due to covid-19\, the Glen Lake Chamber decided to find a way to hold this shopping event online. “We didn’t want to miss a beat. Whether we pick up the event in person next year or not\, we can continue to use the work we’re putting in now and be able to also host it online for years to come\,” explains Patricia Widmayer\, the event coordinator for the Chamber and owner of Glen Arbor Bed & Breakfast and Cottages. While normally we host 25-30 artists in person at the Town Hall with 1\,700 people attending\, we have about 17 artisans participating to sell their goods online or by phone/email. “With the help of our already strong event following and marketing\, we expect this year to still be a success for all who participate.”  Patricia is working closely with fellow artisan and friend Carol Murray\, who is helping with the planning and execution of this event.  \nThe Glen Lake Chamber will be using a Facebook page to post updates and to connect the participating artisans with interested shoppers. Instead of just one day of in-person shopping\, this year artisans can reach shoppers for over 1 month. The event will be open and live from November 7th – December 18th. Look for updates on Facebook about the event and details on how to shop: https://www.facebook.com/glenarborholidaymarketplace\nConnect & Shop Participating Artisans:\n\nHere’s how to shop the Virtual Marketplace: See the following Artisans and their pages to shop online or contact them directly to purchase (in a couple of cases). In light of the Holiday Market being cancelled\, plus the impossibility to social distance\, we decided it would be fun to make a video to post instead\, while cancelling the in-person event. Marketing director and local resident\, Raquel Jackson shares\, “It’s been necessary to make decisions that impact public events for the concern of keeping everyone safe\, but I hated to see this joy-filled tradition not happen. Video was the obvious answer to alternatively host the event. We were so pleased when we reached out to the Glen Lake Church and they agreed to help us make it possible. I love the simplicity of the event and the way it brings people together of all ages and beliefs. It will be awesome to see this holiday tradition bring a bit of love and light in a new way.” \nThe Glen Lake Chamber purchased new LED lights to re-decorate the trees that will be strung up by the Glen Lake Fire Department. Plus\, members from Glen Lake Church’s worship team will perform carols with the lighting of the tree\, while a local will provide professional video support. The Chamber will pre-record the event\, then post the video on Facebook for all to see Thanksgiving weekend. \n\nGraphics and Marketing for the Glen Lake Chamber by Raquel Jackson\, Rockwell Art & Design

SUMMARY:You Are T/HERE
DESCRIPTION:Glen Arbor Arts Center [GAAC]\nJanuary 15 – March 25\, 2021 \nThe Glen Arbor Arts Center begins 2021 with You Are T/Here\, an exhibition that asks exhibitors to visually explore and describe what their own\, personal “here” or “there” looks like. In addition\, an on-line version of the exhibition may be viewed at GlenArborArt.org. Click on EXHIBITS/VIRTUAL EXHIBITS. \nGo deeper into the GAAC’s You Art T/Here exhibition. The COVID pandemic has left more than one person unable to figure out if they’re coming or going\, if they’re here or there. As a result\, they’re stuck and their creative work has been impacted. Gallery Manager Sarah Bearup-Neal is in conversation with three practicing artists about their encounters with creative block: \nFleda Brown\, Traverse City poet and author\, talks about writer’s block and not-writing.https://www.fledabrown.com/ \nCrystal Neubauer\, Wisconsin visual artist + teacher working in mixed media\, talks about her 5-Minute Strategy for pushing through creative block. http://landmarkbookstc.com/ \nPaul Stebelton\, Traverse City poet and proprietor of Landmark Books\, a bookstore\, and Landmark Press\, talks about his 2018 chapbook Writer’s Block. http://landmarkbookstc.com/ \nLinks to these recorded video may be found at GlenArborArt.org. SUMMARY:Exhibit: Joan Richmond | Paper + Scissors + Glue = New Collages
DESCRIPTION:Traverse City artist Joan Richmond exhibits collages at the Glen Arbor Arts Center. Paper + Scissors + Glue = New Collages\, an exhibition of 12 new works\, is on display in the GAAC Lobby Gallery January 15 – April 22\, 2021. \nRichmond is more widely known for her distinctive\, spare gouache paintings depicting land- and waterscapes. In recent years\, she has expanded her practice to include compositions assembled from acrylic-painted papers – materials she creates in her studio. \n“This series of collages is a selection from more than 60 pieces I created during COVID-19 isolation\,” Richmond said. “How does one stay creative while fighting off anxiety? I found that making images that were immediate in execution helped me not ‘over think’ the process thus creating a calming\, meditative effect.” \nPaper + Scissors + Glue = New Collages may be viewed on-line beginning January 15\, 2021. Go to: GlenArborArt.org and click on Exhibitions/Virtual Exhibitions. \nThe GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. It is open Monday through Saturday 11 am – 2 pm. SUMMARY:Real immunity: How this is possible right now — REPLAY
DESCRIPTION:In today’s heightened concerns about our health security\, Michelle Nanouche\, practitioner of Christian Science healing and international speaker\, recently presented a live online talk\, “Finding your immunity from disease\,” which will be replayed through July 15\, http://bit.ly/FindImmunity15April \nThe talk focuses on universal healing precepts found in the Bible\, especially in Christ Jesus’ life and teachings\, showing how they are available for anyone to understand and experience through the lens of Christian Science. The talk is sponsored by First Church of Christ\, Scientist\, in Glen Arbor. \n“This talk shares a reassuring message: the prayer that reduces fear brings out one’s natural immunity to disease and heals the symptoms of disease\,” says Nanouche. \nSharing examples of healing from her own life and professional practice of Christian Science\, Nanouche explains why Christian Science is both Christian and scientific\, meaning that people can prove its effectiveness for themselves\, as fully described in the book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures\, written by the founder of the Christian Science movement\, Mary Baker Eddy. \nNanouche also touches on the life of Mary Baker Eddy\, a mid-nineteenth century woman from New England\, who came to understand\, confirm\, and teach what she felt was original Christian healing. Eddy herself said she was especially inspired by Jesus’ demand\, “He that believes on me\, the works that I do will he do also; and greater works than these will he do\, because I go unto my Father” (John 14:12). \nFor over 150 years\, people around the world have worked to follow Christ Jesus in this practice of Christianity and continue to do so today\, experiencing healings of physical ills and personal difficulties. \nMichelle Nanouche has been a practitioner of Christian Science healing for many years\, helping people on a daily basis through this scientific approach to prayer. SUMMARY:A CELEBRATION: THE PAINTINGS OF AMY L. CLARK-CARELS
DESCRIPTION:The Glen Arbor Arts Center celebrates Amy L. Clark-Carels’s love of watercolor painting in a small exhibition of work May 3 – August 31. This exhibition\, a visual remembrance\, is the GAAC’s second Lobby Gallery exhibit of 2021. It will also be viewable on the GAAC website beginning May 3. \nCarels’s long\, loving history with Glen Arbor dates back to the late 1950s. Her parents began camping here\, then later built a family cottage on Big Glen that the Carels family continues to enjoy today. Carels’s passion and dedication to the visual arts can be seen in her many paintings of local landmarks — from Alligator Hill to interior scenes from the historic Sleeping Bear Inn.  \nThe works in A Celebration offers a curated selection of these iconic paintings. They reflect Carels’s life-long love of the area. Carels divided her time between Glen Arbor and her home in Oakland Township. She passed away in September of 2018. To learn more about Amy Carels\, go to her website: https://www.amycarels.com/ \nFor more information call the GAAC at 231/334-6112; or go to GlenArborArt.org/EXHIBITIONS.

SUMMARY:Virtual conversation with Ronan Hessian\, author of Leonard and Hungry Paul
DESCRIPTION:Thursday May 13 at 2:00 p.m.\nRegister here: https://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJAvd-6urTkqGtXYXaCDu5rqZ29yMYFW5tye \nIn partnership with the libraries of Leelanau County and Cottage Book Shop\, we are pleased to welcome Ronan Hessian to our virtual space where we will talk with him about his book Leonard and Hungry Paul (just released in paperback). Pull up a chair and grab a cup of tea and we will hear from Ronan all the way from Ireland. This book is a devastatingly clever and uplifting and is just the medicine for troubled times. In this charming and truly unique debut\, popular Irish musician Ronan Hession tells the story of two single\, thirty-something men who still live with their parents and who are . . . nice. They take care of their parents and play board games together. They like to read. They take satisfaction from their work. They are resolutely kind. And they realize that none of this is considered . . . normal.\nLeonard and Hungry Paul is the story of two friends struggling to protect their understanding of what’s meaningful in life. It is about the uncelebrated people of this world — the gentle\, the meek\, the humble. And as they struggle to persevere\, the book asks a surprisingly enthralling question: Is it really them against the world\, or are they on to something? \nBritish Book Awards 2020 Debut Book of the Year Finalist \nIrish Book Awards 2019 Newcomer of the Year Finalist \nRonan Hession is an Irish writer and musician based in Dublin. As Mumblin’ Deaf Ro\, he has released three albums of songs\, and his most recent album\, Dictionary Crimes\, was nominated for the Choice Music Prize for album of the year. Leonard and Hungry Paul is his first novel\, and was shortlisted for an Irish Book of the Year award. \nBooks can be ordered or picked up at Cottage Book Shop

SUMMARY:Rescuing Food In Northern Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Taylor Moore\, program manager of Food Rescue of Northwest Michigan\, is in conversation about how this Traverse City organization feeds people and supplies food pantries with fresh\, healthy food. This outdoor program is offered as part of the GAAC’s exhibition Food Is Art / Art Is Food\, in the GAAC gallery through August 19. \nSince 2008\, Food Rescue has collected soon-to-expire\, fresh\, healthy food from groceries\, restaurants\, and food processors. Food is delivered the same day it’s picked up\, and provided at no cost to its distribution partners. Food Rescue of Northwest Michigan is a project of Goodwill Northern Michigan. \nFor more information about this free program or the Food Is Art/ Art Is Food exhibition\, call 231/334-6112.
