He didn’t know much about old-time music and she didn’t know much about him\, but they figured it out. Together they’ve played smoky bars\, summer festivals\, busked on the streets of Nashville ‘til voices wore out\, and led churches in old-time hymns way past time for Sunday lunch. \nManitou Music is a project of the Glen Arbor Arts Center. Tickets: $20 nonmembers\, $18 GAAC members\, and people under age 18 are free. The concert venue is Lake Street Studios Studio Stage\, 6023 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. She will speak at the town hall and following the program there will be a reception and book signing at Cottage Book Shop. We will have books on hand for purchase. Please join us as we welcome Elizabeth\, her dog Gabby and my old buddy Bill! \nElizabeth Berg is the author of many bestselling novels\, including The Story of Arthur Truluv\, Open House (an Oprah’s Book Club selection)\, Talk Before Sleep\, and The Year of Pleasures\, as well as the short story collection The Day I Ate Whatever I Wanted. Durable Goods and Joy School were selected as ALA Best Books of the Year. She adapted The Pull of the Moon into a play that enjoyed sold-out performances in Chicago and Indianapolis. Berg’s work has been published in thirty countries\, and three of her novels have been turned into television movies. Sign out front says\, “Charles Olsen”. \nFaust Cabin: Going south\, at the narrows between Glen Lakes\, take a left onto McFarlane road south of Glen Lake. Go up the hill at least a mile. On the left is inspiration point where you can park. The cabin is left of Inspiration point.  Map.  \nKen-Tuck-U-Inn :  located on the east side of M-22 at Long Lake Rd. From the southern border of the Lakeshore (identified by the Welcome to Sleeping Bear Dunes sign) on M-22 near Crystal Lake\, drive north along M-22 about 0.3 miles to Long Lake Road\, which intersects M-22 from the east. Coming from the north\, the Ken-Tuck-U-Inn is about 10.6 miles south of Esch Road on M-22 Map. \nTreat Farm: South of Empire 1/4 mile\, turn right onto Stormer road. After Tweddle farm park at park gate. Meet at gate in front of 2-track for the 1/4 mile walk to the farm.

Horses mowing in the fields while artists create paintings inspired by the cultural landscape. Take in a display of antique bicycles\, cameras and phonographs. Learn about basket weaving\, soapmaking\, buttermaking\,  spinning\, and fur trapping. After teaching design as a language for thirty years at Calvin College he returned to painting full-time. He has taught plein air painting in Leelanau\, participated in the annual paint out in Glen Arbor however has exhibited largely out west where his work was published in Cowboys & Indians magazine.  Speyers is largely concerned with the transcendent in his work. Frank has said of his work\, “For this show I am planning on twenty small oil paintings. These will be studio work with several Plein Air works from my experiences visiting Leelanau during the various seasons\, sketching and photographing similar locations. The works will be primarily of Leelanau landscapes\, roads and skies. The theme for this show is: M22 Roads & skies.”

DESCRIPTION:Port Oneida Fair\nFriday and Saturday\, August 9 & 10\, 2019\n\n10:00 am – 4:00\nThe Port Oneida Fair is presented by Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in partnership with Historic Sleeping Bear.\nEvery August\, the Port Oneida Rural Historic District awakens from its peaceful slumber and comes alive with activity true to the period when it was a community of robust settlers. \n\n \nSusan Odom of Hillside Homestead offers historic cooking demonstrations in the restored kitchen of the Olsen Farm. \n\nVisitors take a  step back in time at the two-day Port Oneida Fair to experience life as it was in the late 1800s and early 1900s. \nTake the trolley\, hike\, bike or drive (if you must!) to the select historic sites where a variety of traditional rural crafts and activities take place.  Over 100 demonstrators will be hard at work. \nChildren can try their hand at crosscut sawing and other farm implements. Horses mowing in the fields while artists create paintings inspired by the cultural landscape. Take in a display of antique bicycles\, cameras and phonographs. Learn about basket weaving\, soapmaking\, buttermaking\,  spinning\, and fur trapping. Satisfy your curiosity and walk through many of the historic farmhouses and barns that will be open for tours. \nPack a picnic lunch to eat at under a tree\, or purchase food at various sites.  This is an enjoyable and relaxing\, yet educational family time.  The event is hosted by Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. \nFor more information\, call the Park at 326-5135 or get full Fair schedule here.  Buy your Port Oneida Fair posters at the Olsen Farm or Cottage Bookshop\, Glen Arbor. \n   \nVisit Six Historic Sites\nBurfiend Barn: A focus on maritime activities and live music; hands-on children’s activities; square dancing; snacks \nDechow Farm: Oxen mowing in the fields; horses and other livestock; bees to broom and ropemaking; Moomers ice cream and Lion’s Club lunch; too many demonstrators to mention! \nKelderhouse Farm: Visit with the Kelderhouse family; Re-enactment of Civil War camp life – get bandaged by the nurse!  Planting and harvesting of grains in the fields. \nOlsen Farm: A focus on historic food preservation and cooking demonstrations; dulcimer music; Presentations: Farm life; Port Oneida Past and Present; quilting; soapmaking; Cherry Republic Ice Cream\, children’s games. \nPort Oneida Schoolhouse:  “School” is in session most of the day.  Sit in for a spell. See Special Event schedule for times. \nThoreson Farm: A focus on traditional crafts – spinning\, blacksmithing\, face painting; ponies; local artists\, musicians; Cherry Republic lunches and snacks \nSTAR PARTY!  8 pm on Saturday night at Thoreson farm.
