We’re introducing a basic framework here—the ubiquitous triangle shape achieved by increasing at the edges—and showing you one way it looks fabulous (with a verrrrrry special handspun) in a simple-to-work slip-stitch pattern that reminds us of beach stones. Not sure about the handspun yarn? You’ll achieve an entirely different look with a combination of handpainted yarn + solid or two solids/tonals for more of a checkerboard look. Never worked two colors before? Don’t fret–this is an easy-to-remember slip-stitch pattern that yields impressive results.  \nBasic knitting experience required.

That question is central to Leelanau County author Tim Mulherin’s book This Magnetic North: Candid Conversations On A Changing Northern Michigan. Mulherin will discuss why he wrote the book\, and the conclusions he drew at the July 11 Coffee With The Authors interview at the Glen Arbor Arts Center.The program begins at 11 am. \nMulherin\, a seasonal Leelanau County resident\, conducted dozens of interviews in an effort to get some clarity on his question. He spoke with climate refugees\, lifestyle migrants\, people fleeing the COVID pandemic\, tourist industry leaders\, conservationists\, business owners\, public safety officials\, descendants of European settlers\, and descendants of the region’s first and original human inhabitants. All these voices helped Mulherin in his “personal exploration of the relocation phenomenon that’s occurring in northwest lower Michigan …” Published in 2025\, This Magnetic North was named a 2026 Michigan Notable Book by the Library of Michigan. \nCoffee With The Authors is a series of conversational interviews with local\, regional\, and state authors about the art\, craft\, and process of writing\, facilitated by GAAC Gallery Manager Sarah Bearup-Neal. There is no charge. Coffee With The Authors enjoys the support of the Cottage Book Shop and the Glen Lake Community Library.

DESCRIPTION:This beginner-friendly class will introduce you to the art of hand-sewing leather and canvas using a sewing awl. DESCRIPTION:You will learn the sustainable art and practice of creating handmade paper with equipment you probably have at home!  Utilizing kitchen blenders\, handmade mould & deckles and recycled paper\, you can create beautiful papers for your artistic practices\, including collage\, journaling\, sculpture and more.  Students will learn the Western dip method of papermaking with recycled paper\, creating a pulp mixture\, pulling a sheet\, couching and drying.  Time will be provided to experiment with a variety of added colorants\, inclusions and textures to create unique artful papers.

DESCRIPTION:This beginner-friendly class will introduce you to the art of hand-sewing leather and canvas using a sewing awl. You will learn basic leather working skills while making a small pouch-style project and also a small wallet completely by hand. \nDuring the class\, students will learn simple pattern-making\, how to mark and cut leather\, how to set up and thread a sewing awl\, and basic hand-sewing techniques for joining leather pieces together. \nWith the supply fee of $25\, each student will receive a small tool kit to take home\, including: \n\nA sewing awl\nA scratch awl\nCloth measuring tape\nExtra needles\n\nBy the end of the class\, you will have completed two small leather projects and gained the basic skills needed to continue sewing leather\, canvas\, and other heavy materials on your own
