DESCRIPTION:Pennsylvania artist Ruth Trok will use her Glen Arbor Arts Center residency to produce a body of porcelain pots and vessels that explore the interaction between native and invasive species in Leelanau County. Trok\, a ceramist\, will talk about her project during a public presentation June 9\, noon\, at the GAAC\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. The presentation is free. \nSince the 1990s\, the GAAC has welcomed visiting artists who want to immerse themselves in their work. The GAAC’s Artist-in-Residence program offers up to seven\, creative practitioners a two-week respite from their daily lives in order to focus on a new idea that needs space\, or to develop an on-going project. The series kicks off May 27\, 11 am at the Glen Arbor Arts Center. Traverse City Record-Eagle journalist\, essayist\, and author Mardi Jo Link is in conversation about memoir writing with Sarah Bearup-Neal\, GAAC gallery manager. \nLink’s career took off after she published the first of three\, true crime books in the 2008. But her keen\, observational skills\, her ear for dialogue\, and an internal GPS that guides her to the right\, story-building details found a natural home in memoir. Link turned her reporter’s instincts and skills on her own life\, and published Bootstrapper [2013] and Drummond Girls [2015]. On May 27\, Link will share some of the backstory behind the writing of these personal stories\, and the art and craft of memoir. \nCoffee With The Authors is offered without charge. DESCRIPTION:Learn about the history of the Glen Arbor Township Cemetery\, which served the Glen Lake area from 1880-1927\, and the renewed effort to reclaim this long-neglected resting place. Linda Alice Dewey\, chair of the G.A. Township Cemetery Advisory Board\, will describe the discoveries gleaned from this ongoing journey and the latest developments\, including the use of ground penetrating radar to locate 40+ unmarked graves. She’ll also provide profiles of the people buried there\, and discuss the ongoing assistance of Glen Lake School students in this initiative. Her presentation will take place at 7:00 pm\, in the Glen Lake Library’s Program Room.

Though the Festival doesn’t take place until June 3rd\, poems must be submitted to the library by June 1st. DESCRIPTION:Kick off the season with a fun “spend local campaign” from Friday\, May 19th-Sunday\, May 21st\, 2023.\nAll are invited to “step up to the plate” and “take a swing” during Glen Arbor’s Season Opener. Event “Batter Cards” will be available at M22 Glen Arbor and Cottonseed Apparel. Take your card around town and “run the bases” while supporting local businesses and seeing what’s new and open for the season. Stop by any six participating businesses in the area to see if you can score a home run! Purchases are encouraged but not required. 1st\, 2nd and 3rd place winners will be selected to receive “Glen Arbor Bucks.” \nHow it works:\nThe event will take place at your leisure from Friday to Sunday\, May 19th\, 20th and 21st. Participants are to pick up their batter card at M22 Glen Arbor or Cottonseed. The card has six spaces (or bases) to get stamped. As you spend the weekend in Glen Arbor\, ask local businesses to stamp your card. Purchases are encouraged but not required during this “shop small\, eat local” campaign. Once all six bases have been stamped\, participants should drop off their completed batter card to M22 Glen Arbor or Cottonseed. SUMMARY:Creativity Q+A LIVE with Blacksmith Scott Lankton
DESCRIPTION:How do artists think\, work\, and practice? Those questions are explored during Creativity Q+A LIVE\, a series of conversations with Northern Michigan artists at the Glen Arbor Arts Center. On May 14\, 1 pm Leelanau County artist Scott Lankton talks about his practice with Sarah Bearup-Neal\, GAAC gallery manager. The program is free. No reservations are required. Doors open at noon. \nBlacksmith Scott Lankton was “hooked on hot steel” the first time he worked with it. He went on to find a vocation in the forge\, pounding metal into domestic objects of great beauty. Lankton also found that this old art + craft form can be put to use in the pursuit of peace\, and be a way of raising awareness about gun violence — as he raises the profile of his calling – blacksmithing — and how it is more than an historical craft form demonstrated in museum settings. \nCreativity Q+A LIVE is an offshoot of the GAAC’s online feature\, Creativity Q+A. Since 2020\, the GAAC has published monthly\, long-form interviews that dig into artists’ creative practices. Lankton’s conversation was published in October 2022.
