SUMMARY:Knitting the Lakeshore: Mosaic Knitting Basics
DESCRIPTION:A shawl is what we consider a foundation piece\, both in terms of wardrobe and within your knitting repertoire. We’re introducing a basic framework here—the ubiquitous triangle shape achieved by increasing at the edges—and showing you one way it looks fabulous (with a verrrrrry special handspun) in a simple-to-work slip-stitch pattern that reminds us of beach stones. Not sure about the handspun yarn? You’ll achieve an entirely different look with a combination of handpainted yarn + solid or two solids/tonals for more of a checkerboard look. Never worked two colors before? Don’t fret–this is an easy-to-remember slip-stitch pattern that yields impressive results.  \nBasic knitting experience required.

That question is central to Leelanau County author Tim Mulherin’s book This Magnetic North: Candid Conversations On A Changing Northern Michigan. Mulherin will discuss why he wrote the book\, and the conclusions he drew at the July 11 Coffee With The Authors interview at the Glen Arbor Arts Center.The program begins at 11 am. \nMulherin\, a seasonal Leelanau County resident\, conducted dozens of interviews in an effort to get some clarity on his question. He spoke with climate refugees\, lifestyle migrants\, people fleeing the COVID pandemic\, tourist industry leaders\, conservationists\, business owners\, public safety officials\, descendants of European settlers\, and descendants of the region’s first and original human inhabitants. All these voices helped Mulherin in his “personal exploration of the relocation phenomenon that’s occurring in northwest lower Michigan …” Published in 2025\, This Magnetic North was named a 2026 Michigan Notable Book by the Library of Michigan. \nCoffee With The Authors is a series of conversational interviews with local\, regional\, and state authors about the art\, craft\, and process of writing\, facilitated by GAAC Gallery Manager Sarah Bearup-Neal. There is no charge. Coffee With The Authors enjoys the support of the Cottage Book Shop and the Glen Lake Community Library.

The Art Fair is a family-friendly event with a large selection of treasures available across a wide range of price points. Whether you’re looking for a beautiful homemade purse or jacket; an original painting of a favorite\, local scene; a stunning piece of new jewelry; or a unique pottery garlic keeper; you are sure to find it at one of the well-displayed booths\, both inside and outside the Township Hall.  Food is available for purchase. \nAll proceeds from the Art Fair support scholarships for Glen Lake Community School students. According to Ginna Woessner\, chair of the Club Scholarship Committee\, “Since 1980\, the Woman’s Club has awarded over $368\,000 to 271 students to assist them on their path of higher learning. \nThe Glen Lake Woman’s Club\, a 501(c)(3) organization\, was established in 1937 with the goal of fostering social\, civic\, and educational projects.
