HIStory/HERstory: Whose Story? is an exhibition that explores the idea that the victors have written history. This version of history has often been told from one perspective — while other histories have been ignored\, deleted\, denied\, left out of the official record. The exhibition opens August 15\, 5 pm with a reception in the GAAC Main Gallery. \nWhether it’s visual art\, literature\, film\, sports\, science\, politics\, education\, animal\, mineral\, real or imagined history\, this exhibition asks:  \n•	Who’s telling what stories?\n•	Who’s included in the official record?\n•	Who’s excluded? Omitted? Erased? \nTwenty-four exhibitors take on these questions\, and answer them with work about what’s included in the art historical canon; a fractured telling of Native American history; the voices inside a mom’s head; and other topics. Hill\, a resident of Granville\, Ohio\, has developed a practice around the combining of intaglio printmaking and cyanotype photography\, a plein air approach to cameraless photography. Hill will talk about the resulting collages he’ll make while in Northern Michigan at a presentation on September 18\, 10 am. The program takes place at the GAAC and is open to the public at no charge.\n“I use the concept of ‘plein air’ in a distinctive manner\,” he said. “I work outside when creating plates and cyanotypes. I use the studio for the printing phase. I return to outside to create the finished collages. This use of direct observation is unique because I am creating the finished images as ‘printerly’ collages in nature.\nThe GAAC has been hosting visiting artmakers as part of its residency program since the 1990s. During this Walk + Talk\, Bearup-Neal will focus on exhibitors’ visual responses to those questions\, and the beneficial effects of being able to express difficult feelings through a visual vocabulary.\nAs part of the GAAC’s month-long focus on creative wellness\, this event highlights the healing potential of visual storytelling\, and the way art fosters dialogue\, empathy\, and personal clarity. DESCRIPTION:PRESS RELEASE \nContact:\nScott Bouma\nExecutive Director\nGlen Arbor Arts Center\n231 2334-6112\ndirector@glenarborart.org \nBoyne City artist Shanna Robinson’s Glen Arbor Arts Center residency is an exploration of two familiar materials that don’t usually go together: clay and fiber\, woven. Robinson talks about her reasons why\, and how she brings both together in  this during a public presentation on October 2\, 10 am at the Glen Arbor Arts Center. The talk is open to the public at no charge.\n“My goal for this residency is to explore opportunities to connect two bodies of knowledge\, fibers and ceramics\,” Robinson said. “I plan to pursue two approaches to connecting these materials. The first is to delve into the possibility of ceramic forms as looms\, or less formally\, structures that can act as supports for weaving. The second is to make a series of smallish clay pieces that can be woven into my fiber work adding texture and sound.”\nThe GAAC has been hosting visiting artmakers as part of its residency program since the 1990s.
