SUMMARY:Center Gallery: Color Stories
DESCRIPTION:Center Gallery opens its 2016 season May 27 with a month-long exhibition of hand-formed porcelain clay tableware by Darcy Bowden and textile constructions by Sarah Bearup-Neal. An artists’ reception is May 27\, 6-8 p.m. at the gallery\, 6023 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. \n  \nBowden’s plates\, bowls and other table objects make the service of food an artful act. They’re simple\, modern and embellished with familiar shapes in happy\, lively colors. Bowden hand forms her objects using an anvil and paddle. A resident of Ypsilanti\, Bowden taught art for 30 years\, retiring from the Ann Arbor Public Schools in 2008. \n  \nBearup-Neal’s banners and small fabric constructions strike a modern temperament. The Empire artist’s work references many familiar quiltmaking themes and techniques\, then translates these time-honored characteristics into contemporary compositions that showcase stitchery\, mark-making\, hand-painted and hand-printed materials\, graphic line and shape\, storytelling and strong color play. \n  \nThis exhibition runs through June 30. DESCRIPTION:June 24th\, 25th and 26th \nALL DOUBLES\, played in our beautiful downtown Glen Arbor park and on the Leelanau School Courts! \nEvents:\nFriday\, June 24th – Women’s Doubles* and luncheon (same format as last year)\nSaturday\, June 25th – Men’s Doubles* (same format as last year\, see below for info) and Mixed-Doubles* Draws \nSunday\, June 26th – Finals of Men’s Doubles and Mixed-Doubles Draws and NEW this year is a kids/teens match play (more detailed info on this to follow shortly) \n*each team is guaranteed at least 2 matches  \n Cost:\n$50.00 (per player) – Women’s Doubles and Luncheon\, by Cherry Republic\, winners prizes and door prizes donated by local businesses and artists\, T-shirt included. \n$25.00 (per player) – Men’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles\, includes T-shirt\, sack lunch provided by Cherry Republic and prizes donated by local businesses. \n How to Enter:\nGet your partners lined up\, email or call me with the names of your team ASAP – last day to enter is Monday\, June 20th.  If you need help finding a doubles partner for any of the events please contact me and we’ll see if we can help. We will collect money from you at the event\, please bring cash or check (make checks out to the Glen Arbor Township). You will be contacted a few days prior to the event to let you know the approximate times of play. \nPlease let me know if you have any questions and PLEASE pass this along to anyone you think might be interested in this FUN tennis tourney in beautiful downtown Glen Arbor!!! \nThe changes to the format last year brought great reviews so we are keeping it the same with includes using the 4 newly resurfaced courts at the Leelanau School\, just a couple miles down the road. This allows us to expand our tournament to include 2 separate draws (A and B) in both the Women’s and Men’s Doubles. The A draw will consist of tournament tough teams\, those who play team tennis\, league play\, 3.5 rating or above and wish to play in a competitive environment. This book offers a  rare glimpse into the interiors of 60 historic Glen Lake summer cottages and the nostalgia enveloping them. The stories of the families that built on Glen Lake are recounted: where they came from\, how they got here\, where they stayed. They fell in love with the Glen Lake and the Dunes and sent down deep roots by building these now-historical family retreats. Three hundred and fifty photographs honor cottage lore and memories and take us on a walk back in time. Each cottage’s importance in the lives of its owners and to the community is celebrated\, revealing the special sense of place and state of mind that only a lake cottage can evoke.\nAlso on hand to sign their new books:\nRevered photographer Ken Scott and painter Kaye Krapohl trekked the entire 100 mile Lake Michigan Leelanau Peninsula shoreline. The first to accomplish and document this amazing feat\, their two unique visions and spectacular artwork are now available in the new book Leelanau Trek: One Shoreline\, Two Visions (45.00)\nAND more favorite local haunts are captured by artist Hank Feeley in his second book Painting the Joy of Sleeping Bear Country.
