SUMMARY:Music on the Mountain - Jill Jack at The Homestead
DESCRIPTION:Jill Jack’s magical connection to her audience is the result of her generous artistry. By combining her gifts as a conceptual visionary with a warm gathering of musical influences\, Jill touches that secret heart of ours with her melodies and lyrics. In her hometown of Detroit\, Jill needs no further explanation. She’s been lauded in equal measure to her talents: Since 1997 she’s won over 37 Detroit Music Awards. in every conceivable category that applies to a singer-songwriter. Much of this provincial success is due to her charming stage presence and emotive songwriting. It’s simply called connecting\, and it’s the bounty of a true songwriter open to all of life: her own defeats\, victories\, hopes dashed\, dreams fulfilled\, her muse\, her loneliness\, her misplaced love and her romantic successes. \nYou get all of Jill Jack in a performance — her blend of folk and rock traditions\, her open humor\, her fine band. Jill harbors little of her process from her audience — each performance is about opening a window and shining a light into her songwriting\, leading inevitably to the intense relationship with her fans. Her career is founded on folk’s best idea — that there’s a shared knowing between artist and audience\, a conversation that flows both ways during a show. Plus she’s a strong woman who’s won over the toughest town in a man’s world — she’s a bandleader\, the principal songwriter in a large group bearing her own name\, an employer and automatic arbiter of musician’s issues. \n\nThe concert begins at 7pm. Transportation via chair lift or six-passenger golf cart begins at 6pm. Cash bar and snacks are available for purchase. Coolers are not permitted.\nIn the event of inclement weather\, the concert will be held in Mountain Flowers Lodge. \nTickets are $15 in advance\, $20 at the door. \nTo purchase tickets\, call 231.334.5100 or visit mynorthtickets.com

SUMMARY:Music on the Mountain - Blackthorn at The Homestead
DESCRIPTION:Blackthorn welcomes you to the rich tapestry of Celtic music. \nTraditional songs of emigration\, sea shanties\, lively jigs and reels\, and ancient airs combine with some of Ireland’s best contemporary songs for a musical experience that captures the history and legend of Ireland and its people. \nWhat makes a Blackthorn show unique is the variety of tunes\, tempos and textures. These instruments complement the lead vocal of Belfast native Richard McMullan and the band’s tight blend of four part harmony. \nBlackthorn has played throughout the Great Lakes region since 1984. Based in Detroit\, they can be found regularly at O’Mara’s Pub and Restaurant in Berkley. Other venues include concert halls\, universities and festivals\, including main stage appearances at the prestigious Michigan Irish Festival and world renowned Milwaukee Irish Fest. \n\nThe concert begins at 7pm. SUMMARY:Mostly Music presents “The Big Bands Never Left…the Audience Went Somewhere Else”
DESCRIPTION:Get behind the scenes with the “Mostly Music” series continuing in January 2017. The “Mostly Music” series is a winter extension of the Manitou Music Festival. “Mostly Music” is hosted by Bob Foskett\, who programmed jazz radio in Chicago for 30 years and is now a DJ for Friday Morning Jazz at WNMC in Traverse City. Programs will be roughly 60% music\, 40% discussion. There are programs in January\, February\, and March and if you enjoy watching and listening to live music\, “Mostly Music” provides an opportunity to get some “behind-the-scenes” information too. Plus it’s another way to escape cabin fever in the throes of winter. \n  \nThe first session of Mostly Music’s winter series is a lecture with recorded examples of the continuing metamorphosis of the jazz big band in American music.  As American tastes in popular music changed in the 1950’s\, the big bands\, which were considered the core of American popular and dance music until then\, seemed to be on their way to extinction. \nHowever\, creative musicians and changes in music education not only revived the big band concept\, but nurtured it to the point that today there are more big bands playing jazz than during the heydays of the 30’s and 40’s….by at least a thousand fold!  GAAA’s resident jazz nut Bob Foskett will trace and explain that development.
